Re: J-Drama: 相棒 15 (Partners 15)

<EPISODE 8>

I liked this episode! It wasn't as enthralling as the last two episodes, but I still enjoyed it very much. Was this the first time we had seen Ms. Prosecutor? She seemed awfully familiar, and I thought we had seen her in a previous season, but I think this was the first time her character appeared on the show. Maybe we saw her in another drama?

Ms. Prosecutor being stigmatized for going to therapy, and resigning because of her involvement in this entire 'scandal', goes to show how mental illness and therapy/counseling is still not as widely accepted in Japan as it is in the United States. Going to therapy and battling mental illness is not understood and is considered something that is not to be spoken about in public. That mindset is changing, but as we saw in this episode, it is still considered to be a 'scandal.' It was very saddening to see Ms. Prosecutor feel that she needed to change the witness' testimony in order to hide this truth about herself, but she knew it could damage her career if this were to be exposed.

Ironically, in the end, Ms. Prosecutor faced a lose-lose situation. If she hadn't changed the testimony, she faced the risk of having her therapy sessions exposed and being pressured to resign from her position. She did change the testimony and thus ended up having to resign anyway, after Ukyo and Kaburagi discovered the truth.

The angle of the middle school teacher spending her student's birthday with him came out of left field. I knew there was something suspicious going on with her but I didn't know exactly what. For a second there, I thought she knew the killer. The writers are great at surprising us!

I wish Ukyo had let it go at the end. It's not like Ms. Prosecutor asking her witness to give a false testimony changed the outcome of the case. The culprit was still the murderer. Furthermore, it's not like Ms. Prosecutor lied for the wrong reasons - to keep her 100% record, or to hide a scandal. However, we (and Kaburagi) should know that under no circumstances will Ukyo let anything go.

Ukyo has alienated his partners over the years because of this very reason. We've seen it with Kame, Kanbe, Kaito, and now it's happening with Kaburagi. I feel like we've seen that same scene over the years - Ukyo walking away, content with the case being closed, while his partner stares off into the distance - wondering if the right thing was really done. We're seeing it again with Kaburagi, now.

Mr. Cyber Guy is definitely happy being Ukyo and Kaburagi's errand boy, but as we can see, he is plotting something behind the scenes. Hmm! I feel like they are saving this for the mid-season special or maybe even for the season finale.

Speaking of the mid-season special, aren't we overdue for it? I think they usually save it for the ninth or tenth episode of the season.

Good episode! Episode 9 airs next week. I'll be out of town for the next 2 weeks, so I'll catch up with the episodes I've missed and post my comments when I get back.

Greg, I guess that's why the two men were so quiet at the end of the episode. However, I can understand why Sugishita followed through. Yes, in this case, the outcome was the same, but once you've done it, the second time just becomes easier. There's another dorama, 99.9: Keiji Senmon Bengoshi from 2016 (a second season is slated to come out in 2018) that tackles on this quota that the Japanese prosecution have placed upon themselves.

Creidesca, by no means was I suggesting that Ukyo was wrong and that this issue should have been let go. I know that asking Ukyo to overlook a crime (or potential crime/cover-up) is like asking for the impossible. I guess I was just looking at it from Kaburagi's perspective. While Ms. Prosector should have never openly encouraged or cajoled the witness to change her story, it was just a shame that her career had to be ruined because of social stigmas surrounding mental illness, trauma, and psychological counseling/therapy. Somehow, I believed Ms. Prosecutor when she said that her actions were motivated not by a desire to fulfill a quota, but rather by an attempt to not ruin lives/careers (including her own) as a result of the truth. It's certainly a complicated situation...

And we also saw that Kaburagi's former boss at Public Safety say he was no longer going to backup Ukyo because of Ukyo's tenacity to reveal the absolute truth no matter the consequences. He lamented the loss of an extremely talented prosecutor.

Me, too! Unfortunately I haven't been able to watch most of this season, but have caught a couple here and there, including last week's. Is this the 2-part conclusion we usually have?

It's amazing that Partners has lasted all these years maintaining quite a degree of excellence. I've enjoyed what I've seen of this season very much. I still wish they'd keep one exclusive makeup artist and stop fooling around with Ukyo's eyebrows!
