Re: NOTICE: UTB 18.2 TO GO OFF THE AIR EFFECTIVE 9/3/16

Yes, I think UTB leaving 18.2 is more of a financial decision, and that they may no longer be able to afford all the programming they were airing during a 24 hour format. I'm not sure, but it is just a hunch.

I wrote to Time Warner Cable (TWC) many times about carrying 18.2, and they always told me that they make decisions regarding which channels to carry based on the number of requests they received from subscribers. So, I guess not enough people requested or even knew about 18.2. Still, all the other 18.x sub-channels are now carried by TWC, so there must be another way. Unless UTB turned them down?

I am hopeful that if the new 1.5 hour format on Sunday nights takes off, UTB may consider adding more programming on 18.1. Might as well be hopeful!

Re:

For while I have had an hypothesis that there would be some repercussions for UTB broadcasting operations and cannot help but wonder if it - in addition to other factors contributed to the reduction of UTB broadcast hours.

Those somewhat familiar with American broadcast regulations might recalled that is have only been in the last year that episodes of Cased Closed/Meitantei Conan was tagged as educational/informative programming is a mandatory for children's programming. Think about it - in the first episode, the victim in was decapitated on a roller coaster and subsequent episodes routinely depicted supposed suicides and murders of characters e.i., hangings, bombings, stabbings, physical assaults of both men and women... then there was some of the language that was interpreted, as recently as yesterdays episode when Genta thinks he severely injured a foreign soccer star and and the eventual perpetrator saying "s--t!" in the subtitles. Granted I may not know the regulation of Children's programming by heart, alot of happened on the Conan series would have garnered protests from parents groups.

Similarly, the "I/E" designation seems to be applied arbitrarily, as it was applied to series like "Astro Boy" and "Anibara Ongakukan"

Then there have some questionable music videos, I forget title but it featured May J. in a live performance where she sings "I don't give a s--t what people say..." and another music video with a heavy lesbian theme involving two women dressed as [college?] schoolgirls.

The gist of the aforementioned is regulations - UTB could not regulate itself or the regulations were limiting whatever goal UTB had in mind.

Re: NOTICE: UTB 18.2 TO GO OFF THE AIR EFFECTIVE 9/3/16

I am wondering if any employees will be laid off, and if so, how many people will lose their job. I presume UTB accumulated quite a large staff after moving to a 24 hour format, and now, they probably won't need so many people if they are only going to be airing an hour of programming. I wonder how many people will lose their jobs?

Though we are all sad to be losing our beloved J-programming, I am also worried about the future of all the people (employees, interns, etc.) who made 18.2 possible for all of us. Without them, there was no UTB.

Re:

About possible expansion of Japanese programming on 18-1 in the future, I am concerned that space may not be available as it would displace other programming. I personally would be happy to displace any amount of programming on 18-1 for more Japanese programming.

I said this before, but my biggest concern for myself is to be able to watch Partners with English subtitles. Some years ago, I thought i saw or heard that DVDs of series' seasons were available to buy. I would possibly be willing to buy seasons of Partners with English subtitles, so if any of you know how or where to do that, please post here. I am in the SFV. If I am able to do that, and if Partners is not available again on TV here, or on line, possibly those of us who live near each other could even get together to watch Partners, or we could lend the DVDs to each other.

Can you tell I am not one for patiently waiting a year to see what happens?

Re: NOTICE: UTB 18.2 TO GO OFF THE AIR EFFECTIVE 9/3/16

I have not heard of Partners being available on DVD, but if it is, the only place I can think of that might carry it would be Japanese DVD rental stores in Little Tokyo or the South Bay. However, as I mentioned before, Season 15 is still filming in Japan and has not even aired yet over there, so even if Season 15 were to be released on DVD, it wouldn't be for at least 2 years (or a year-and-a-half at the earliest). Also, I don't know if the DVD would come with English subtitles. However, after Season 15 is released, it wouldn't hurt to Google "Partners 15 with e-subs" and see what comes up.

E-mailing UTB and asking them if Season 15 would ever be aired on 18.1 (when it is released next year) might not be a bad idea, either. If they see that there is enough interest in the show, it might lead them to make different programming decisions, if possible. UTB has aired all 14 seasons of the show, so I have a feeling they know how popular the show is with their audience.

I just found out what's going on. Unbelievable and Disappointing...

Is there alternative Japanese TV? KXLA. TV Japan ($25 per month), NHK World on 28.4 (free live stream site and app). What about Fujisankei, Magic Bell, JA TV and Soto/NTB (Newfield Television Broadcasting)?

Tokyo TV USA is air on 27.1 in San Francisco and Bay area.

I don't think any other free TV channel in Southern California airs subtitled J-dramas after Magicbell's demise, but the good news for viewers of NHK World programming is that you can watch it on KCET's sub-channel of 28.4!
