I have heard from my friend that this is the best season of Partners yet! I was so down after the end of last season and Kaito's jail sentence, but now I am excited again!

Interesting choice of a new partner for Ukyo. I was kind of hoping it would be the Nakama Yukie character from last season, but we'll see what happens!

Excited for our new season of Partners! I cannot believe it has been fourteen seasons already. emoticon emoticon

Ukyo's new partner, Takashi Sorimachi, should be interesting. The actor fits the general physical image of Ukyo's last sidekick—he's just aged to a mid-40-something. The kicker is that the new partner is part of the police bureaucracy. It should be interesting to watch how this new couple adjusts to one another and if their investigative styles differ significantly.

I always remember Takashi Sorimachi as Oda Nobunaga in Toshiie and Matsu — and probably a bunch more dramas! It certainly won't take any time at all for me to adjust to this new Partner. emoticon

Yes, Takashi Sorimachi is a veteran actor, and I am so excited to see him in Partners! He has definitely been typecast in those "tough guy" roles (Oda Nobunaga in Toshiie and Matsu comes to mind, as you mentioned) and so that might give us a hint about what we can expect from Ukyo's new partner. We shall see how Ukyo deals with that!

This partner reminds me of a mix between Kaito and Kanbe. Physically speaking, the new partner is reminiscent of Kaito, but the fact that he is in the police bureaucracy reminds me a lot of Kanbe. Will he be keeping an eye on Ukyo, like Kanbe was initially?

My favorite partner will always be the original, Kame! I still think that he and Ukyo shared the closest relationship among Ukyo's three partners so far.

Re: J-Drama: 相棒 14 (Partners 14)

<EPISODE 1> (Part 1)

Season 14 has officially started! The writers did not disappoint with the suspenseful first episode. Even though we have only seen Part 1, I am already hooked on this story and can't wait to see what happens next. They got right into it, didn't they!?

Kaburagi, Ukyo's new partner - He definitely reminds me of both Kanbe and Kaito in different ways. Like Kanbe, Kaburagi is connected to the elites and has dubious reasons for being in Special Missions. He was sent on "loan" from the Justice Ministry to do "administrative work" in Special Missions? It seems like the main reason he is there is to make it difficult for Ukyo to come back, although Ukyo had no problem doing so. Like Kaito, Kaburagi has the suave and cool thing going for him, but he doesn't seem as much of a loose cannon as Kaito was - at least not yet. Plus, unlike Kanbe, Kaburagi doesn't seem as connected to the elites - his main ally is the Vice-Minister of Justice.

I had to crack up when Kaburagi basically kept Ukyo in check and made it clear, in no uncertain terms, that this was his turf and that Ukyo should "watch and learn." Ukyo did, and then when Kaburagi's investigation went nowhere, Ukyo strategically took over the reins and showed Kaburagi how an investigation is really done. LOL! Kaburagi's face watching Ukyo ask all the right questions was hilarious, and you can totally tell that Ukyo enjoyed showing Kaburagi that he is a force to be reckoned with - all while sporting that classic Ukyo charm.

I'm interested in seeing how Ukyo and Kaburagi's relationship develops. Judging from the opening sequence (where Ukyo and Kaburagi are playing a chess game, keeping each other in check) it might not be a smooth path at first. Then again, it took Ukyo lots of time to get used to Kanbe and Kaito, as well. Kaburagi seems like a good person and I don't think he is necessarily in Special Missions for the wrong reasons. Once Ukyo warms up to him (and once he warms up to Ukyo) things might turn out just fine. We shall see.

My favorite scene was watching Ukyo in London, getting recruited by Scotland Yard. I have been waiting for "Ukyo in London" since Season 2, when we last saw him there. The writers have finally listened! I think Mizutani Yutaka broke the fourth wall a little bit there when the British detective asked him to move to London permanently and work for Scotland Yard. In English, he replies to him and says that it might be a nice idea. Then, he walks over to the camera, looks right into it, and repeats the same line in Japanese with a slight grin. Loved that scene!

Another reason this episode was interesting was because Ukyo really has no position as of yet. He has been put on leave from Special Missions and the force after the Kaito debacle at the end of last season, and has no badge or key card to get in. He has to rely on Mr. Forensics for information and to let him into the headquarters. The police are essentially waiting for Ukyo to resign outright, but he has yet to do so. I wonder if Kaburagi can convince his friend, Mr. Vice-Minister, to intervene on Ukyo's behalf and let him stay in Special Missions. Or, maybe Kai-Dad can do something, too.

Speaking of Kai-Dad, it appears he and Ukyo are still on good terms. I wonder if Kaito will make a cameo - maybe Ukyo will visit him in prison? Didn't Ukyo promise to go see him in last season's finale? Or am I imagining things? LOL.

As for the case, it is too early to say anything yet, but I definitely feel that the victim was murdered. It is way too suspicious, although I don't necessarily believe the ghost story. We shall see. It's just a question of a) who did it, and b) how Ukyo and Kaburagi will find out the truth.

Great premiere! After 14 seasons, Partners is still going strong. Part 2 airs next week!

Re: J-Drama: 相棒 14 (Partners 14)

Nothing disappointing here! I was curious how they would handle both Ukyo's state of suspension and the dynamics with his new partner, Kaburagi.

Kaburagi - His level of maturity and experience are a relief. He seems to have heard quite a bit about Ukyo. Even so, Kaburagi didn't show a pride or ego issue. I liked how he didn't bristle up at Ukyo's making himself at home in the office, nor was he uncomfortable in cleanly and objectively setting an official boundary with Ukyo—since Ukyo does not at this time have any official authority within the MPD. Kaburagi is cool-headed in leading and in learning/observing.

Ukyo - The one characteristic that Ukyo developed over the last couple seasons is still with us and will probably be expanded. He has become somewhat of a Chatty Cathy. Maybe he is so old that he's now entering his "second childhood" phase. My preference is the original version of Ukyo: serious, intent, no funny business. I sort of got the feeling last night that Kaburagi is close to playing the "parent" role, while Ukyo isn't. But, of course, Ukyo is in a tenuous position, not having official status in Special Missions.

At any rate, I thought it was an outstanding opening to a new season, a new partner, and new circumstances. There will be a little more graphic violence in this season, I suspect, as we've seen it slowly escalating over the recent past.

UGH...

I was all set to watch Episode 1 on Friday evening at 8pm, but they showed something completely different instead-- NHK World News. AGAIN. The same one they showed 2 hours before. That has got to be a mistake. Have I completely missed episode 1...?

Looks like the scheduled is completely out of whack. At 9pm, they showed yet more NHK World News.

Suicunesol, I'm sorry to hear you missed Episode 1, Part 1. UTB generally airs an encore of the Thursday night drama on Fridays at 8:00p, but this isn't the first time where they have had a broadcasting issue and end up showing NHK World programming instead. It usually happens on Friday nights or during the weekends while nobody is "there." Hopefully they will have it fixed by next week!

I agree with you the writers' new approach to crafting Ukyo's new personality, Nchristi. He is definitely doing things that Season 1 and 2 Ukyo wouldn't have done, such as pester Mr. Forensics about the details of the case. Plus, ever since Kame left, Ukyo has been a lot less of an authority figure when it comes to dealing with his partners. It makes sense, since Kanbe was an elite and Kaito was the son of an elite. Kaburagi is similarly involved with the higher-ups, and since Ukyo isn't technically an official member of the force, he is definitely in the junior position now. I find that interesting, and wonder if the dynamic will shift now to Ukyo being more of the assistant rather the main guy investigating? We shall see.

I've always wondered if there could be a Partners without Ukyo in the lead. Maybe gradually shifting Ukyo from the dominant leader position to more of a junior partner or an 'advisor' moonlighting on the side (in an official capacity) would give him the chance to leave the show if Mizutani Yutaka so desired. I could see Kaburagi leading the show, along with another, new partner. I wonder what the writers have planned?

In any event, I can't wait for this season!

Re:

There wss one scene I didn't understand. Kaburagi was standing outdoors in front of a building while he was on the phone with Ukyo. From the background, a Caucasian woman walks close by and Kaburagi says something to her that causes her to react by slapping him so hard that he drops his phone several feet away.

What was it he said to her that seemed to offend her?
