Re: Drama

I agree with you Hiroshi. Definitely a tale untold but with so many unnecessary details all the way through.l cannot understand why the seppuku of Chacha and Hideyori did not appear They were so prominent most of the way through this drama so that it seemed a sudden vacancy at the end.Sorry not my favourite taiga treatment this time.

Re: J-Drama: 真田丸 (Sanadamaru)

(Having trouble with this post... must be the rain)

Good thing I watched the ending credits all the way. Is this the first time a taiga has used the film trick of adding a scene at the end of the closing credits? [It didn't help much.]

Pros

Loved Sakai Masato's performance. Truly excellent and riveting.

Cons

Weak conclusion. Sort of left me in a daze of what happened to the rest of it?

Unrealistic details. Like the guy taking the rifle shots to allow Genjiro to escape on his horse. Come on, now. How do you have your leg blown up, take other missiles in the chest, then suddenly show up "back at the ranch" looking mostly okay and able to engage in a little more battle with the enemy?

Really lame battle scenes. LOL! Most of those final battle scenes looked like a dressed rehearsal walk-through of only the principles involved. I guess they just didn't have the budget to do more than give us an impression of battle, up-close fighting, etc.

Conclusion — Can't be too critical of this presentation, however. There wasn't any way I could enjoy the new edited format on LA18.1. Too chopped up with edits. I also enjoyed the taiga less because I wasn't sure what was historical and what was fictionalized to appeal to younger audience interest.

Bottom line for me is that while I enjoyed Sakai Masato, I'm left with the feeling that his great talents were rather wasted in this particular drama. How did the Japanese ratings turn out for Sanadamaru?

Re: J-Drama: 真田丸 (Sanadamaru)

Yes, this was the first time I can recall that we saw a scene after the closing credits. At first, I was happy, thinking that there was something more, but it was just filler and didn't really do much to give us the feeling that the drama was over.

I suspect that UTB cut out some scenes from the finale. It doesn't make any sense, since they replayed so much of the first half of the episode. If they were going to break up the episode into two parts, you'd think they'd just air it in its entirety over the course of two weeks rather than butchering it. I hope they don't do the same for the next Taiga when it begins airing in April.

This article may have been posted here before, but it addresses some issues about why the Taiga dramas have been getting pretty bad ratings as of late. I think there is too much emphasis on "stars" and what "looks cool" rather than actual substance. I will argue that the last truly great Taiga was Atsuhime. although Ryomaden and Kiyomori came rather close.

NHK may need to rethink its taiga formula

But yes, the only saving grace to this one was the acting - Sakai Masato and the Ieyasu actor, for instance, did a great job. The only problem was that they had to act with sub-par writing.

On to the next one...
