Where do IDOLS go....eventually

I have wondered for some time whqt happens to the young pretty idols in the song and dance groups as they grow older. some of them are lucky and get picked up in a drama at times and sometimes they are good enough to tackle a solo career. I am mainly thinking about the male groups. Once they have trained for several years and really worked very hard their life is sometimes very short as a group or as a member of a group. where do they go? do they stay in show business in a minor capacity or do they go home nd go back to a 'civilian' life They only make a good salary if they are supremely xuccessful and wanted by the public. Then they can do lots of commercials. That pays them more than the group salary. Agencies take a goodly percentage of the groups they manage.
Does any one know or have any thoughts about this. Seems to be a lttle sad if they just melt back into general life.

This is an interesting topic, Peg. I've wondered the same thing myself. Actually, I think the current generation of idols are too young to have reached this point of being too old to continue their careers, but I do know of some female Japanese singers from the 1980s who have since retired. One of them (Yamaguchi Momoe) retired in the early 1980s after she got married. Since then, she hasn't made any public appearances and has drifted into married life. She is still with her husband, but leads a very, very low-profile life—despite her immense popularity when she was famous. I think that was a decision she made on her own, since she retired at the height of her popularity.

Other singers from the 1970s and 1980s have been lucky enough to get roles in TV dramas. I think Ukyo from Partners is one of them. He used to be a singer.

Not sure about Korea but I'd imagine it is similar there.

Re:

Hi Greg. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future. I don't think I can stay around long enough to check the current groups. !!
I like the group 2AM very much. They all have good singing voices and harmonize very well. At least they SING and don't cavort around the stage in gymnastic gyrations.... They just stand there and sing and it goes over very well in Korea with older audiences as well as the younger ones. they were recently in L.A I think with other Korean groups.

Yes, it'll be interesting to see what happens to many of the Japanese and Korean idol groups and solo singers. I suspect some will end up as actors/actresses, and maybe others will just fade into oblivion and only pop up for the occasional appearance? (I wonder if anyone will write a tell-all book... a behind-the-scenes look at the Japanese or Korean music industry. Now that would be a bestseller! LOL!)

I don't keep up with many of these idol groups, so you'll have to keep us posted about what happens, Peg! emoticon

The only group has has stood the test of time is the Japanese group SMAP. I think they are into more than twenty years and in fact I can't remember when I first found them. I found Takuya Kimura first as an actor and then saw some of the SMAP shows on TV. They will never break up it seems and they are famous in Japan as a group and also individually as singers and actors and all sorts of other shows.they do ll sotrs of interesting things apart from being a singing group.

Yes, I think SMAP is like a special case. I'm sure many of the idol groups in both Japan and Korea are hoping that they'll reach the same success level as SMAP, so that they are still a famous household name 20-30 years down the line, just like SMAP.

Well, locally, we see MC Hammer and he's still around but not really active. Some of them will start record labels, others will go into acting or invest their money into businesses. Others will do the work behind the scenes of the music industry such as producing the music or some other aspect of it. I don't think most of these people will simply let themselves be forgotten. They definitely take on various activities, maybe not in music but possibly in business.

Isn't there a Korean idol named JYP? A friend was telling me about him once. I could be wrong, but I heard that he used to be an idol (he may still perform) but has since moved on to production and opening up his own agency (JYP Entertainment). I could be wrong, though!

Yes! There is him. He still performs sometimes (I think), but he most definitely opened up his own record label and is in the producing business. He is now an actor as well I believe and I've seen him judge certain shows. Haven't seen the shows but have seen commercials or previews for them or what not.

So while not all of them may have the same fortunes as him of still receiving various offers in the entertainment business, I'm pretty sure they do something similar. Maybe they do comebacks years later with a fresh new look and all the people from that era still support them or they sort of become a classic for a generation a la Park Mi Kyung and then they can't disappear. emoticon

Interesting stuff. I wonder if all idols dream of one day opening up their own record label and 'recruiting' a new generation of idols? It's certainly very ambitious, but if done correctly, the idols can ensure a lifelong career (and income!)
