Re: J-Drama: 相棒11 (Partners 11)

I hope cutting scenes doesn't become a common practice again on UTB. Maybe it was just this one time, given the length of this particular episode.

If UTB hadn't rerun a bit of Part 1 EP 11 in Part 2 EP 11, the scene wouldn't have been cut. Part 3 EP 11 started right off where Part 2 EP 11 ended. They should have known better since this particular episode was even longer than EP 1. I mentioned previously EP 11 ran for 2hrs, whereas, EP 1 was 1hr45min.

Oh well. Hopefully this won't happen again with the grand finale.

Re: J-Drama: 相棒11 (Partners 11)

<EPISODE 13>

Jinkawa is back! Looks like he's made his obligatory appearance a little earlier than usual this season. I think it's hilarious how Jinkawa's character pretty much behaves the same exact way every time he shows up. He used to take great pride in making sure Kanbe knew that he was his superior—having worked with Ukyo since the days Kameyama was still around. Now, he's doing the same thing with Kaito, except it is much more intense! At least Jinkawa was slightly intimidated by Kanbe's previous position of power, but now that Kaito is so new to the force, Jinkawa has no problem bossing him around. LOL! It's a bit funny to watch, actually.

Then, we have the running gag of Jinkawa falling for a woman who either turns out to be a criminal, or is already taken. This time, it was the latter. I thought that surely Jinkawa would have a chance with this young woman whom he had helped so much, but sure enough, she has a boyfriend… and they are serious. Go figure!

I think I suggested last season that Jinkawa and Ms. BL would make a very cute match together. Well, with all the little hints the writers have been dropping here and there about Ukyo and Ms. BL, I guess there's no room for Jinkawa in that equation, after all! I hope that when we see him in Season 12, he'll finally have found someone who makes him happy… but then again, I say that every season, and we still see the same old Jinkawa pop into Special Missions, as single as ever! LOL!

Jinkawa is another good example of how Partners always keeps characters that have been around from the beginning fresh and interesting. I always enjoy watching his interactions with Ukyo and his partner of the season, whether it is Kame, Kanbe, and now, Kaito. I also got a big kick out of watching him blame Ukyo and Kaito for his failure at romance with Azumi. Ukyo's responses and facial expressions during that scene were priceless, too!

The case itself was interesting. I wonder what charges the stepfather will have to face for his part in the crime? He wasn't the one who murdered the art dealer, but he tried to cover his friend's crime and lied to the police. Since he is terminally ill and doesn't have much longer left to live, will he face jail time? I've always wondered how the police deal with murderers or criminals who are terminally ill at the time of their sentencing. Will they be expected to spend the rest of their days in jail, or are they given some kind of lesser sentence, such as house arrest or probation? In this case, the stepfather's friend was the actual murderer, so since he's healthy, I can see him getting a more serious sentence, but what about the stepfather?

Loved the way Ukyo tricked the stepfather by making up a false name for the flea market in London where the stepfather allegedly purchased the sculpture. LOL! I think I've gotten pretty good at telling when Ukyo is tricking the people he suspects… he gets this funny look on his face and a predictable grin. But the people he is fooling fall for it every single time! I guess we've gotten used to Ukyo's techniques after watching him for eleven seasons.

I wonder how long Azami had been living with her stepfather? She told Ukyo and Kaito that her mother used to be the man's housekeeper, and that he eventually married her. However, she didn't want anything to do with him now that her mother had passed away. Had they recently gotten married? Or had he known her since she was a child? I'm not sure if I missed that or if they never mentioned it. Whatever the case, I'm glad she is getting closer to her stepfather now that she found out that he really did love his late wife, after all.

Interesting case! Season 11 really has been excellent so far. I'm so relieved that Partners continues to get better and better with each coming season. I am confident that Season 12 will be even better!

Episode 14 airs next week.

Re: J-Drama: 相棒11 (Partners 11)

UTB ran a promotion during Thursday night's episode stating that the big season finale for Season 11 will be aired as part of UTB's annual New Years programming. The episode will be broken up into three parts, and will be aired over the course of two days (January 2nd and 3rd).

Part 1 will air during the regular time slot (Thursday, January 2nd, at 9:00p) while Part 2 will air the next day (Friday, January 3rd) at 12:00p. The conclusion (Part 3) will air that Friday evening at 6:30p.

It'll be nice to see the final episode aired almost all at once, instead over the course of 3 weeks. The finale will be a whopping 2 and a half hours!

At the end of the episode, Azumi was at Tokyo Police Hospital, I'm guessing that's where her stepfather is hospitalized for the time being?

Thanks for the clarification, Creidesca. Ahh, so if he is at Tokyo Police Hospital, then he's probably receiving treatment there while he is technically 'under arrest.' I wonder if he will spend the rest of his days there, or, if his condition improves, maybe he'll be transferred to another facility?

<EPISODE 14>

Excellent, excellent episode and case. Usually, we have some idea about who the culprit is, but for this particular case, I really had no idea that it was the mother until the very end! For a second there, I thought that the record shop owner might have even committed suicide, or that Yusuke had killed him, but it turned out to be neither. Wow.

Season 11 is really excellent so far. These cases just keep getting better and better. I never cease to be amazed with how the writers have kept Partners going and even improving!

A few comments...

I think one of the reasons why Kaito was so upset with Yusuke's father about the cold way in which he treated his son was because he might have drawn some parallels with his relationship with his own father. I still can't forget how Kaito's father asked Ukyo if his son was dead yet (back during Kaito's amnesia scare when he was rendered unconscious for a while after being attacked.) The father in this episode was acting the same way. Whether he was just putting on a tough act, or he really felt that way, I think Kaito's father was reminded of how his own father treats him, and it struck a nerve.

I feel so sorry for Yusuke and his family. They've already been dealt a heavy blow with the death of the older son, and now the mother will be going to prison—probably for a long time. But who knows. Maybe it'll be a good chance for Yusuke and his father to grow closer. They've both learned a lot (well, I hope they have!) after this incident, and maybe it'll be their last chance to harvest a real relationship as father and son.

This episode really makes me think deeply about some relationships between parents and children in Japan, especially with children who are having 'growing pains' and a tough adolescence. Again, an inability to open one's true self up to loved ones is a big issue. Neither Yusuke nor his late brother were truly able to open up to their father and tell him how they felt. This essentially ruined their lives. The only people Yusuke was able to open up to was the couple who owned the record shop—two people who had no blood relation to him and were essentially strangers.

Then we have the mother, who isn't able to open up to her family, either. She tries her best to get Yusuke to open up to her, but she isn't able to voice her true feelings on the root of the problem. It's as if everybody in that family was dancing around the elephant in the room (the murder of the older brother) and nobody faced it head on… until things took an irreversible, tragic turn. Unfortunately, the only way for the mother to vent her jealousy, hurt, and anger at the situation was killing the record shop owner—for (as she saw it) taking her son away from him. But rather than that, I don't think she could fathom the fact that her dear son had chosen to open his heart up to somebody else.

Anyways, it was a very tragic case. It kept me on the edge of my seat for the whole hour, but it makes me feel sad to think that this family will be broken up forever. Plus, the wife of the record shop owner will now be a widow. So sad how just one rash, thoughtless action can essentially ruin many lives…

Speaking of the wife of the record owner, I wonder if she will be charged with messing up the crime scene and diverting the investigation? She technically tried to cover up for Yusuke, so I wonder if Ukyo and Kaito will find a way to charge her with something?

A few lighter scenes…

Itami was hilarious in this episode! His facial expressions were spot on, especially when he was asking Kaito and Ukyo to leave. Itami & Crew are just too funny! I love how they always get startled whenever Ukyo shows up, unannounced. Then, Itami's partner says, with a tone of dismay: Keibu-dono! (Inspector!)

My favorite scene was when Ukyo and Kaito were discussing the case in the office. Mr. Contact Lenses' two employees were blatantly listening at the door, as always. Ukyo stops talking for a second, gives them a polite bow, and then continues. The two men scurry away! LOL!

The chocolate scene at the end was very cute, too. I wonder if Ukyo got any Valentine's Day chocolates from Ms. BL!? She was missing in this episode, despite the Valentine's Day references! LOL!

Excellent episode. This season just keeps getting better and better. Episode 15 airs next week!

I was curious about the chocolate scene. I got the feeling that Kaito was referring to something previous when he mentioned Ukyo having chocolate at home. I thought maybe I had missed something along the way?

Hmm, I tried to remember if there was anything mentioned along the way that we might have missed, but I can't seem to recall anything. I think Kaito was just making a little joke about Ukyo, speculating that he was more popular with the ladies than he might have lead on. Maybe it was just a little way for Kaito to needle or embarrass the always proper Ukyo in front of Mr. Contact Lenses.
