Re: SM Town Live Tour Los Angeles, MBC Idol Olympics on MBCD/LA18.3

Did anyone else catch SM Town Live Tour III in LA on MBCD last night?

I thought, overall, it was pretty good. The cinematography and editing for the event, I thought was especially well done. My only critique, I felt they showed the concert goers, fans a little too much, like when they were singing along, jumping up and down, etc. as the concert was happening - it was nice to see it, and that infectious energy and to see how popular K-Pop is getting with the varied audience members (a lot of non-Asians), but I felt the slant was a little too much, I wanted to see a little more of the stars of the show.

One other slight disappointment, I don't know if I was getting sleepy or not, given that it was late... but I don't recall f(x)'s Electric Shock being performed, that's their song that I wanted to hear. The BoA segments were pretty cool, and I also liked the Girls' Generation portions as well as the songs they performed (Genie, Gee, Run Devil Run).

As for the performances itself, overall, they were pretty good. But being spoiled in seeing the perfect and over-produced/edited Music Videos, Live Performances don't seem as slick. We don't of course get the live stage atmosphere of being there watching it on TV though.

I'm really glad MBC (America and Digital) decided to show this. I'd like to see more concerts like these, but I wish they'd show more than just pop.

Re: SM Town Live Tour Los Angeles, MBC Idol Olympics on MBCD/LA18.3

I watched it. In fact, I think it's the first K-concert I've watched all the way through. My opinions are somewhat similar to yours, SuperRookie. The biggest flaw was how out of sync Girls' Generation and some others seemed to be on stage. True, the MVs are always perfect, but I've also seen Girls' Generation, for example, performing live in Seoul a couple of times and they were perfect then, too. Sometimes, I got the feeling last night that some of the performers were acting like they were on vacation in SoCal—a whole different attitude about the quality of their performance. That wasn't true of all the group members, though.

Then I wondered about that scissor platform they were on. Yikes. I hope it had some sort of invisible guard rails. I found it distracting to watch them being raised up higher, keeping my fingers crossed nobody would fall off. I can't help but think such an environment would be very distracting to the performers, too, limiting their wholehearted immersion into their parts.

One of my pet peeves about MBC programs like this one is that they don't at least add the performers' English names to the screen when the groups first begin. I don't recognize all these groups and finally realized that the only way I could see who they were was when the camera was showing audience members. Around the mezzanine level, they had the name of the present on-stage performer(s) well lighted in English. So, for that, I'm glad they showed the audience as much as they did.

My biggest disappointment, though, was Yuna missing from Girls' Generation. The group really falls flat for me without her. She's my favorite. I realized last night that I am barely interested in the group when Yuna's not there.

I enjoyed seeing the audience demographics. In the past, it has been mostly Koreans, it seems. But this time there were many Anglos and many guys there, too. (It might have been a selective marketing decision, though.... who knows?) I'm used to seeing mostly screaming girls. I was really tickled when they showed an older Korean man. He had the look of a Korean father of teenage girls, the "What am I doing here watching all these gyrating guys in funny clothes and the girls screaming their lungs out?!" On the other hand, if he was a parent, at least it must have been comforting that this was an innocuous, more wholesome concert than would usually be seen in a large venue in LA (or any major city). Nor would he have minded seeing all those beautiful K-girls performing!

I enjoyed BoA. She's a solid performer. Her attire was a little casual looking. It reminded me more of a rehearsal than an actual performance.

That's my critique. On the whole, I enjoyed watching it, MC Hammer pants and all!

Re: SM Town Live Tour Los Angeles, MBC Idol Olympics on MBCD/LA18.3

I just remembered something, this Tour III in LA happened on May 20, f(x)'s Electric Shock was released in June... no wonder it wasn't in the concert. LOL!

That's a good point, nchristi for a few of the acts, I had to look for the mezzanine level for the group names also (mostly the boy bands who I don't really follow much)! MBC America/Digital is making huge progress in subtitling a lot more content than they ever have before, which I'm thrilled about (especially for those who remember I was so disappointed much of last year with dramas not having subs)... but they still do have a way to go with some of the variety program content. KBS World does a great job in this regard, so many of the variety and entertainment shows, concerts etc. are subtitled, even Music Bank or the MB concert specials. Though in my opinion, MBC has better translators, which I hope they can maintain with their new growth this year.

Yes! I too got the impression like the performances were more casual, backstage it was a very light and festive atmosphere whenever the camera would show what was going on there... and that definitely seemed to translate to a number of performances. I agree with you also that the Girls' Generation was the most noticeably out of sync. It reminded me of their meh performance at Letterman. LOL! Despite the flaws I enjoyed it for what it was, but it definitely left me wanting with the overall series of performances.

On another note, Idol Olympics -- I'm looking forward to at least checking it out, even though I'm not sure why I plan to. LOL! Hopefully it'll be entertaining. Although if it doesn't have subs, I wonder if it'll be too hard to follow.

Re: SM Town Live Tour Los Angeles, MBC Idol Olympics on MBCD/LA18.3

I've watched the "Idol Olympics" before (don't know if it was called that in the past) and found it to be very entertaining. The 'boy group' guys are frequently quite athletically adept and look like they've had training in some track and field events. The girl groups are usually the klutzy, "girlie" ones, with one or two individual girls being really good athletes. The fun is that you never know which idol will fall into which category of ability. People I would not have imagined have surprised me and given me a whole new image of them as individuals.

Plus, a couple of things I like about the Korean idol stars in this setting. Since a lot is going on at the same time and they are caught up in the spirit of the competition, they are not as guarded in what they say and do on "reality" talk shows. Also, most of them are very good natured and 'go for it' knowing that they're really going to mess up and make everybody laugh. But it isn't derisive, really, just fun that they try wholeheartedly regardless of their abilities.
