I came to K-dramas via Singapore. I live in New York State, but was working in Singapore for 6 weeks during the Summer of 2010. Some nights I'd turn on the TV there and they had shows from all over Asia. I soon realized that the ones from Korea were just the best in my opinion. I got hooked on 2 that didn't end until after I got back home. One was Secret Agent Miss Oh (aka My Country Calls or something like that) and the other was All About Marriage (aka Please, Marry Me or Marry Me, Please). I liked them both for different reasons - Miss Oh because I found it very humerous and AAM because I really liked the part of the story involving the schoolteacher and the widower with the son in her class. When I got home, I managed to watch the end of both on KBS' former paid online site. Since then, I've found the free sites, like Viki and Dramafever and have also purchased some DVDs. Since I liked Han Sang-Jin so much in AAM, that led me to My Too Perfect Sons (aka Sons of Sol Pharmacy House) which I bought on DVD. That's probably my favorite K-drama so far and it also got me following Lee Pil-Mo and I pretty much watch anything he's in (new or old). I recently bought the DVDs for Golden Era of Daughter-in-Law (which LPM is in). It's a little older drama and I think K-drama quality has improved a lot since then (although I'm only 6 episodes in so far so who knows). Unless I want to pay too much per channel to add a Korean channel onto my cable (no packages where I live for these), I only have mNet. mNet is starting to show some K-dramas, but not the genre (which I'm starting to think is more middle-aged - oh no!) I enjoy most. Viki and Dramafever are very helpful though and most recently I've watched King 2 Hearts and now A Gentleman's Dignity (which is a new favorite). And, after reading the posts here I'll look into getting a Roku box too. Anyway, I guess you could say I came to K-drama by going to Asia, but ironically not to Korea.nondisclosed_email@example.com (kdfancier)Wed, 08 Aug 2012 19:40:42 +0000 Re: How Did You Come To K-drama? aka How Did K-drama Catch You In Its Snares?https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2056017,from=rss#post2056017https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2056017,from=rss#post2056017Welcome to the forums gingergal! I have been trying to remember how it was with my interest. I can't remember when I first saw ladies in hanbok in an old farmhouse in the countryside. I know there was a grandma and a few grandsons. They were just out of teens and working. One worked on the railroad and rode a bicycle to and from home. Two sisters separated since childhood and of course when found out the rich one hated the poorer one. Both fell for lad on bike etc etc. Since this was with no English subs I was guessing and all because I saw the hanbok on the older ladies. It was just a chance surfing the channels but it was years ago. Until then I was only into Japanese programmes and films for about twenty years or more. Attic Cat was the first drama where I learned how to download and burn a disc. Several of us were taught by a lovely young man who seemed to be a graduate student in a Uni somewhere in the Mid west. Maybe Ohio. He was more than helpful and of course it meant we all kept on delving into kdrama. I saw the first burst out drama for Ahn Jae Wook. I fell for him in a big way. He was a a big idol singer in his role and I loved his voice. Later got many of his albums. Drama was' Star in my Heart.' I have seen all of his work since including his Chinese concerts which were marvellous. I also loved Hotelier and thought it a wonderful eyeopener about working in a hotel. Of course at that time Bae Yong Jun was the handsome hero we all adored. It was after that the the scales fell from my eyes and I lost the rose coloured glasses. It was his role and the character I loved and not the actor. In fact I soon realised he could not act very well. He is a business man at heart. I thought Phoenix was a splendid drama with such good cast. Lee Seo Jin !!! Really there were so many dramas during the day and night and I can't even remember them all. Now and then I see an actor and think Oh I know them but when and where is too far back to really remember again. I no longer burn discs. No more room on shelves. anyway I would have to learn all over again how to put the subs on the video. Had a few PC changes since that time. I still admire Kim Rae won and Ahn Jae and Lee Seo Jin and many more. Seems to be a list of male actors.... Well I must admit I always liked the men best.nondisclosed_email@example.com (PeggyME)Mon, 30 Jan 2012 16:35:03 +0000 Re: How Did You Come To K-drama? aka How Did K-drama Catch You In Its Snares?https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2052119,from=rss#post2052119https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2052119,from=rss#post2052119Instead of conversing via Private Message, might I suggest you post a new topic in the Tech Forum? You don't have to have a new TV for it to work but you do have to have high speed internet and wireless internet. So the dramas are being "streamed" to my TV instead of my computer. If anyone is curious, I'd be more than happy to go into more detail if you want to PM me. You should also check with your cable provider to see what their usage cap is. My cable company has a 250 GB per month limit. On my visits there, my sisters would spend the evenings watching was I thought was K- soap operas. There were so consumed that our dinner plans were being planned around the dramas. Of course, not knowing what the attraction was for the dramas, I told them that I was shocked that they watching these soaps. Well, I was quickly corrected and told that unlike american soaps, K-drams have a beginning, middle and end. The conversation continued with some background about the drama which peaked my interest. So, I did spend one evening with them and watched a drama called " bride from Vietnam" (not sure of exact title but something similar to that) Well guess what, I got hooked and so much so that I have an unbelievable collection of DVDS. I also found a couple of stations on Oceanic that we now subscribe to and have just purchased ROKU for the TV which HULU PLUS and CrunchyRoll is part of. Hulu Plus and CrunchyRoll have got a quite a bit of dramas some I've seen and others I haven't. I love the dramas because they are not so violent, and they seem innocent and pure. Granted they are some that aren't but the family ones are clean and the storyline is good. It touches all of your emotions from laughing hysterically to being angry to crying and smiling. I'M HOOKED! I accidentally found this site and have to say that it is amazing. I now have a forum that I can exchange thoughts with and also keep current with the eps that I miss during the week. THANK YOU!!! For the longest time, I don't even remember when it all started, must be more than 10 years ago,  my relatives have been watching Korean dramas all along. I just sort of watching the discussions from a side wondering what all the rave about. At my brother's kitchen table, the conversation would usually drifted to some sort of discussions about these dramas. My sister-in-law, the ring leader, would lead the discussions, and everyone would tease me for my unusual indifference to this. The surprise was because, when we were young, I, too, was a part of this group that used to be addicted to the HongKong kung fu dramas in the eighties. Though that ended quickly after a few long dramas, our social life took precedent. About three years ago, a relative handed me two sets of old DVDs, one was "Miss Mermaid," and the other "Fireworks" and said "watch these, you might find these interesting." Reluctantly, I took them. At that time when insomnia was a rarity, those DVDs proved to be hazardous to my health in how they affected my functioning the next day due to the marathon late nights viewing of these two dramas. One can say that, yes, I have missed the "wave" and all the great past dramas that have been mentioned from time to time. With the pace that I'm watching these dramas, I don't think that I will ever be able to catch up with these great oldies. Three Brothers was my first weekend drama, Smile Donghae was my first dailies. Due to my curiosity, Korean dramas opened up a whole new world of cultures, its people, its history, and yeah, its culinary world. Only a few days ago, while watching a Korean sitcom on youtube, another show pop up, the Kimchi Chronicles. So another late night viewing of the show. For some one who loves food as much as I do, this was more than a delightful surprise. Even better, these shows were narrated by the adorable Hugh Jackman, and hosted by an English speaking person. Korean dramas are fun to watch, but what I found even more entertained are the discussions, and the adventure of discovering a new culture. The discussions are enjoyable whether it's at my brother's kitchen table, at a local diner with friends, or reading board postings which I only discovered a few months ago. Thanks bbstl for creating this thread, and everyone for sharing your thoughts and stories. nondisclosed_email@example.com (MKana)Wed, 25 Jan 2012 02:58:41 +0000 Re: How Did You Come To K-drama? aka How Did K-drama Catch You In Its Snares?https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2052031,from=rss#post2052031https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2052031,from=rss#post2052031I'll be brutally honest...for me, it started as just being mesmerized by the beauty of the K-drama actresses But, starting with my favorite K-drama & actress of all-time...Sweet Spy & Nam Sang-mi...the stories were sooo much more entertaining & interesting than any American drama or show, that I got hooked! In early December of the same year I was flipping channels and came across this drama set in ancient Korean history-"Tears of the Dragon"-it was called. It was so fascinating-great production, gorgeous costumes, it had English subs-I immediately got hooked. Then it was on to Emperor Wang Guhn, The Dawn of the Empire, More Than Words Can Say, To BeWith You, Yellow Handkerchief, and a whole lot more. Kdrama first stuck it's hooks in me back in 1998 when I was channel surfing late on night and chanced upon the International Channel as it was called before becoming AZN. I don't know which dramas were playing since they weren't subtitled back then. I had no clue as to what was being said, so I kind of made it up, trying to figure out what was going on. But the actresses sure were hot and that was enough to keep me captivated - plus it was fun trying to figure out the story. (That viewing technique sure would come in handy with some of the dogs we've been watching lately in the club ) One of the shows I remember was about music producers running all over the place competing with one another trying to discover the next big idol group. But the first full length drama I saw with subtitles was Hotelier - the first one shown on the brand new but short lived Asian network AZN. Still one of my favorites, I loved the glossy production values and the day to day behind the scenes peek at the everyday lives of the hotel staff. Then they showed Phoenix - that's when I discovered this website and all the wonderful friends who share this love of kdrama. We're all a little nutty in our passion for this pastime, but I love having someone to talk about these shows with. Loved this drama too and was freaked out by the creepy stalker-like scenes where wifey was trying to hang on to hubby. Winter Sonata and My Name is Kim Samsoon, and it was all down hill from there. Glad I'm on this crazy ride. nondisclosed_email@example.com (laars)Sun, 22 Jan 2012 23:53:58 +0000 Re: How Did You Come To K-drama? aka How Did K-drama Catch You In Its Snares?https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2052011,from=rss#post2052011https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2052011,from=rss#post2052011I remembered Roof Top Cat coming after Winter Sonata. That first one was subtitled, but the story, I thought, was hilarious! Little did I know that it was standard Kdrama fare. But I was hooked--I loved the actors, I LOVED the language--by the end of the show, I already knew how to say Mother and Father. This was back in 2001. At that time, I couldn't figure out, like you, what the schedule was. One day, they moved the shows from channel18 to 62! I was in panic mode! Thank goodness, my neighbors are Korean, and their daughter speaks English so she told me where to look! After that, I became fascinated by the cultural mores and couldn't stop watching. That is, until, I actually gave one of the K-Dramas he was seeing a shot because it caught my attention. When I saw it, it was called "Possessed" but I believe it is also called "Soul," also known as one of the few horror k-dramas out there. Pretty unknown for a 1st K-Drama, right? nondisclosed_email@example.com (KJDRAMA)Thu, 19 Jan 2012 02:08:56 +0000 Re: How Did You Come To K-drama? aka How Did K-drama Catch You In Its Snares?https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2051942,from=rss#post2051942https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2051942,from=rss#post2051942The first drama that I saw was a chinese drama by the name of "Mars". It was back in 2004. After that I just got hooked on all K-Dramas. I love them........nondisclosed_email@example.com (maryorng)Wed, 18 Jan 2012 19:57:58 +0000 Re: How Did You Come To K-drama? aka How Did K-drama Catch You In Its Snares?https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2051939,from=rss#post2051939https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2051939,from=rss#post2051939I thought you beat me here, B. I looked back and you joined about 7 days after I did. I was channel surfing in the middle of the night and found Phoenix. Was this really Korea? It didn't look like M*A*S*H. The language was so soothing and beautiful to me. I lost many hours sleep during that drama just waiting for the new episode which came on very late or very early in the day here. I thought I would die when Phoenix ended. How could there ever be another drama that would ever compare? Prince's First Love was next . It only took about three episodes to get over Phoenix . That was more than six years ago Now I get twitchy if I don't hear Korean coming from my television every day. And I wonder why I can never find the time to do stuff around the house nondisclosed_email@example.com (captiva)Wed, 18 Jan 2012 18:44:30 +0000 How Did You Come To K-drama? aka How Did K-drama Catch You In Its Snares?https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2051900,from=rss#post2051900https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2051900,from=rss#post2051900Hi everyone! I hope this thread will give everyone a chance to share their stories of how they came to our favorite obsession: KDRAMA! I bet there are some great stories. For me, it was one day while ironing that I thought I put on my usual BBC but when I looked at the screen I saw a big panoramic view of what sure looked like Seoul (where I had traveled). WTH? Oh, I had input 112 (AZN) instead of 113 (BBC). That intrigued the heck out of me, so I watched this show (Hotelier) for several days and then - it was over! WTH? Then the next day, a new show started (Country Princess). Little did I know I was forming my first K-crush (. . . and now I can't even remember his name *smacks head*). After a few weeks, that story wrapped up and it was over! Once more, WTH? Huh, the next show was Phoenix. It was pure obsession for me: the actors, the story, the music, the scenery. I had anxiety attacks, having to travel over Thanksgiving to where there was no AZN, and at the apex of the story! I managed to find Yes Asia in order to buy the set so I could find out what happened. Can I just mention, this was in 2005, well before easy downloads, blogs, etc. and when Hallyu was a distant gleam in Korea's eye. I thought the shows were soaps, so I kept googling "Korea Soap Operas" before I found a link to inform me that *ahem* they are Korean DRAMAS, thank you very much. The next show was Prince's First Love and it was so addicting that I searched and searched and luckily found CJK where our community of like-minded souls (like-addicted?) was gathered. MNIKSS was my second purchase and it's pretty much delirium ever since How about you?nondisclosed_email@example.com (bbstl)Mon, 16 Jan 2012 21:02:33 +0000
