Re: K-Drama: 가시나무새 (The Thorn Birds)

Like I said, knowing these two were in a relationship would be a deal breaker for me. JE and YJ may get through all of this and remain a couple, but if I were JE it would leave a sour taste in my mouth. I don't see it as worth the aggravation. He still can't rid himself of the slimy, evil witch and isn't totally committed if he's still running to her when she calls. I'd just call it a day if I were JE. He's sullied himself and I wouldn't want him. emoticon

Re: K-Drama: 가시나무새 (The Thorn Birds)

KW was given his once chance to take JE away from YJ. In the car, driving away before the engagement ceremony, JE didn't know what to do, or more specifically where she could go since she had no one except for Myung Ja and Han Byul. KW's reply: Why don't you have anyone? You have Young Jo!

KW is just too nice, why couldn't he said himself? And he didn't immediately grab his chance when the scandal of JE being an unwed mother broke out either to propose to JE.

YJ's feelings towards YK kind of reminds me of Linghu Chong's feelings towards his sect sister Yue Lingshan in Jin Yong's (Louis Cha's) wuxia novel "Xiaoao Jianghu".

Yeesh, the relationships are complicated. I just read all your comments, and I'm still not sure I've got everybody right. So is KW related to YJ? How did KW's father do all the bad stuff? What bad stuff did he do besides removing YJ from his mother (I think, did I get that part wrong?). Why was YJ living in the household with JE? Sorry if you've all explained this in previous posts. Thanks.

KW and YJ are best friends. YJ's mother & KW's father dated once upon a time. I think YJ's mother might have spurned KW's father at least twice? She chose Han Soo's father over KW's father, then YJ's father over him.

What KW's father did was take YK the baby from her mother & put her in an orphanage (I think the majority of managers at the time would do the same, at least he didn't heartlessly just put the baby on the streets or something). He didn't prevent her from knowing where he placed the baby. YK's mother says she's partly to blame since if she had tried hard enough it wouldn't have happened. KW's father lies to KW that the taking of baby YK was on orders of YJ's granpda & YJ's father carried it out (I guess KW's father wanted to keep whatever respectable image he had left w/ his son). YK eavesdrop on this conversation so she seeks revenge on YJ.

YJ's father made a stipulation in the will that if YJ gave any money to his birth mother or brother he would forfeit his inheritance. YJ's father had foresight--he knew this grandson of his would do it and also knew just how cold-hearted his other 1/2 brother (Young Guk) & his family would treat him, so thought it best to have him fall to the bottom right away and get up from there.

YJ does indeed uses his money to help out his 1/2 brother Han Soo to get out of jail. Seo Jin, childhood friend of YJ, a rising star and daughter of a rich family, wants him to be her husband, so she had photos of him and her taken in a hotel room when YJ was drunk. Scandal breaks out and Seo Jin's father learns about YJ losing his inheritance. He tells Seo Jin that she cannot marry YJ, and she acquiesces. Young Guk wants to send YJ to New York, YJ supposedly agrees, but at the airport when he meets up w/ YK (who is also heading to YK for further studies), he wants to look cool in front of her, so he tears up his ticket. He goes to Myung Gu's fabric shop. Earlier, he had learned that his grandpa had left him this shop (no one in the family knows about this except Myung Gu, grandpa, and now YJ). The shop originally belongs to the Lee family, and Myung Gu is looking after the shop (YJ's grandpa knew that Myung Ja had taken money from the store not soon after she gave birth to YK. She stole the money to give to the adoptive mother to take care of YK).

Myung Gu is Myung Ja's (Lee Ae Rin) brother. Myung Ja is also YK's birth mother. JE brings YK's baby to Myung Ja. When Myung Ja misunderstands and thought JE to be her daughter, JE let it continue, but not soon after, Myung learns the truth and JE reveals what she knows. Myung Ja, initially tells JE that she could leave and live her own life, but JE begs to stay, as she has no one, no family, a person w/o roots (her own mother that she had been searching for having recently passed away before she had a chance to see her).

Thanks so much, creidesca! Now all the previous comments and the few episodes I've watched make a lot more sense!

Re: K-Drama: 가시나무새 (The Thorn Birds)

I've been really behind on my K-Drama watching in the last month, so I haven't been posting as up-to-date on this thread.

I did catch up this weekend on this series though, and I must say the last 5 episodes I saw to catch up for next week have been rather gripping, sitting through all 5 episodes in one sitting flew by. It's a series getting better and better for me. I love the complex relationships, and the interwoven events and drama crossing all these characters.

One slight failing of the series for me is, I feel the same way as smoochie1 with regards to the romance and coupling aspect... right now I see it mostly one sided, mostly on JE's part. I don't see much chemistry between the two leads either both as characters or actors, at least not yet.

Re: K-Drama: 가시나무새 (The Thorn Birds)

The following part of the OST track was heard at the end of EP 15 (when YJ reached YK's side after getting her phone call) and also again at the end of EP 17 (when YJ leaves along w/ JE in the car while YK is looking on):

우리 여기까지 하자 - Let's End Here performed by Lee Seok Hoon (SG Wannabe) & Beige

Let's end here.
Let's end here.
Anymore is too hard, too hard.
And I can't bear it.

Let's end here.
Love is a painful fate.
It's not the answer, not the answer.
Not for us.

Did anyone finish this show?

I found the ending a little too rushed, and typical in terms of a happy ending and resolution for all. With the strong intensity of the series throughout, the final episode or two felt a little anticlimactic.

Still, this was quite an interesting drama with several powerful moments. I always enjoyed trying to untangle the relationships, motivations and backstory complexity in my mind. Finally, I also highly enjoyed the very, very good soundtrack of this series, it really aided the poignant and dramatic moments.

I finished this too and can never see how a crazy evil witch can all of a sudden become reasonable in the last three minutes. I should be used to it I know. Also, to the last, I saw no chemistry with the two leads.

Re: K-Drama: 가시나무새 (The Thorn Birds)

A griping drama, very well done. Until the end. The end wasn't a total bomb but it did fall a little flat for me. I think it would have been more realistic if Han Yu Kyung dies of her disease.

The two lead actresses are excellent in their roles and I particularly like Kim Min Jung as Yu Kyung. She's an actress I've never cared for all that much. However, I constantly wanted to throttle Yu Kyung, thanks to Kim Min Jung's acting. She is outstanding as the very conflicted 'villain' who knows how to bring trouble and heartache to a whole new level, while expressing the pain of Yu Kyung's life, too. This actress makes it palpable. Top notch acting ability.

As for the pairing of Joo Sang Wook as Young Jo and Han Hye Jin as Jung Eun, I liked their characters together. True, there's no sizzle going on, but neither of their characters is the 'sizzle' type. They are low-key as individuals deeply wounded by life, and low-key as a couple together, too. There's a certain quiet quality that Joo Sang Wook brings to the screen that I find very attractive and it was definitely there in this role. His eyes and smile paint a whole world for me. LOL!

The supporting cast was top notch, too, with good character development. Lots of different angles and history going on within the story. All told, I thought it a superior drama production.
