Re: K-Drama: 가시나무새 (The Thorn Birds)

We still have like 30min before the end of EP 2 airing on KXLA, and already 2 very important scenes got cut--and they were crucial too! When one of the characters is going to mention a phrase in later episodes, we're all be wondering why that person would say that.

Here in my part of the world, KBS runs an episode at 9pm on Wednesday night, which is usually edited, and the same episode the next afternoon, which is not edited. I tape both and have found as much as 10 minutes missing from the original airing.

Episode 2:
the last scene... i really can't believe that yeong jo wants to kiss back yookyung.
he is really stupid to fall on such evil woman. emoticon

at first, i like yeongjo and i want him to end with jeongeun...
but after i see this scene, sometimes i think that yeongjo is not worthed for jeongeun..
after i watch the other guy (seo do young) closely, i think he is also nice, sincere, and kind of cute, especially when he smile.. emoticon
so if jeongeun ends up with him.. it is fine also.. emoticon

btw, i really think the real reason that yookyung seduce yeongjo because she knows that jeongeun has a memorable past with yeongjo and she is interested in him because of revenge and hate towards jeongeun...

i wonder what will happen if jeongeun didn't tell yookyung..
(there will be no conflict at all...) emoticon

Hasn't anyone in american see this drama?

It is quite an interesting drama...
in Korea, the rating is becoming more and more every week..
It even defeat other competitive drama at its latest episodes..

Re: K-Drama: 가시나무새 (The Thorn Birds)

I'm a week behind and caught ep. 2 on DVR... hope to watch last week's episode 3 tonight and maybe this week's episode 4 and 5 tomorrow/Sunday.

Unfortunately with all the KBS and MBC shows on DVR from the last week or two, I was unable to watch the KBSAM/KXLA versions as well and unedited online versions of this and Dream High... I'll have to make do with these edited versions until I get more time (too much K-Dramas, so little time LOL) and inquiring on the generosity of you all who have seen both. emoticon

Ep. 2 felt a lot more cohesive than the first episode, with the pieces of the puzzle falling into place. I'm finding the character relationships and how they'll be exposed the most interesting part of the series.

The series has a very heavy and tense atmosphere, at least, I find it so, so far. I can't articulate why, sometimes it's almost oppressive, but also that same source is key to making the series interesting. Also in semi relation to that... I'm starting to revile YK's character, her evil intents are so deeply transmitted through the screen. The actress playing her is doing a good job. class blockquote creidesca wrote:

Which scenes were cut out of ep. 2?

The one glaring question I have is, how did JE find out that YJ is the boy from the past. class blockquote woodstocks wrote:

A late welcome to this forum. emoticon I have been enjoying your posts in the different threads since you joined, especially the posts here by you and creidesca since this is a fairly complex series with a lot going on.

Most of the posts in this thread are from posters in America. Some of the weekday shows do not get as many posts as the daily and weekend dramas though.

Since you mentioned about american viewers, are you in another country? class blockquote smoochie1 wrote:

I compared one episode of The President recently, edited vs online unedited and found almost 20 minutes were chopped off from our local version... pretty huge chunk. emoticon

Superrookie :
yeah, i'm in Asia.. so i follow the schedule here, but still it's maybe two/three weeks behind the original aired in Korea(KBS).
So, i keep all these memories inside my head, trying to keep up the post with you guys there in America. That's why i always asks about your current episodes.. emoticon

About your question:
how did JE find out that YJ is the boy from the past.
She knows when she heard the conversation between YJ's mom and YJ's brother, and she noticed YJ's mom face, she remembered that she had seen her talking with YJ at the police stations ten years ago.
(maybe this is the cut scene...)

Re: K-Drama: 가시나무새 (The Thorn Birds)

I have yet to watch the KBS-LA/KXLA epis of EP2-5, but I do have them taped--my spring break was over since Monday, and I've been busy w/ schoolwork, even though I did put time to watch the latest Thorn Birds episodes streamed LIVE online as they were airing in Korea. I've only done this for a handful of K-dramas.

woodstock is correct SuperRookie w/ respect to how JE was able to determine YJ was the boy of her childhood. He already reminded her of the boy she knew back then when the one time after she had failed to make the 2nd round of auditions, YJ, spotting her from his car, takes her out for some "soup noodles". The way he split the disposable chopsticks made her think of the boy from back then. However, it wasn't until at YJ's mom's salon, where she was to meet up w/ her friend Mi Ryun, did she realize that YJ was the boy. When she came into the salon, she saw the photo of YJ's mom, but she couldn't place where she has seen this woman before. Then later, she overhears YJ's mom berating her older son, and from what she overheard, she was able to make the connection, recalling where she had last seen the salon owner--10yrs before at the police station. This was one of the cut scenes I described from EP 1.

A crucial scene cut from EP 2 was the JE & Mi Ryun audition--one of the lighter moments of the drama. The 2 performed 4 acts/scenes: a scene from the movie Kill Bill (where Mi Ryun was Uma Thurman and JE was Lucy Liu), a scene from the Japanese movie "Love Letter" where the "o denki desu ka" line/running joke comes from as JE played the "echo" (KW will always remember this scene when he sees JE), a Bollywood dance, and a magic act.

The guys (KW, YJ, and one of the other PDs of Team 2) thought they were terrible at their roles, but if you watch the magic act, all 3 "freaked" when they thought Mi Ryun was going to skewer JE w/ the sword. In other words, the magic act was so bad they believed it to be so, because YJ later asks if it hurt--JE getting jabbed by the sword. JE replies that she and Mi Ryun wanted to make them laugh, to which YJ tells her not to do that again!

And it turns out JE actually passed the audition (not Mi Ryun though) to go onto the 2nd round of auditions. The director of the film had liked her pose in the profile/resume, which was unlike the others that seemed to have come from the same mold/school. However, YK intentionally had JE's profile/resume shredded even though she had heard the director give JE the pass. If it hadn't been for KW who purposely made sure the director was aware of the "o denki desu ka" girl, and YJ who had her cell#, JE would not have been able to play biker girl#1 in the movie "To My Beloved Daughter" which stars Seo Jin as the daughter and Lee Ae Rin as the mother.

I didn't see the 2nd 1/2 of the KXLA/KBS-LA edited EP 2 yet to see what else got cut.

Oh, before I forget, I hear that Tai Seng has bought the DVD distribution rights to The President w/ E-subs in North America from KBS/KBS World, so if you are wanting this series, wait for it instead of getting it on EOR, as the Tai Seng DVD set will likely be cheaper. The series will likely be released on DVD (dubbed in Vietnamese) first from Tai Seng for rental before it hits Yes Asia w/ Korean/Mandarin audio & Chinese/English subs for sale, like it did w/ God of Study/Master of Study, Baker King Kim Tak Gu/Bread, Love and Dreams, and Revenge of Gumiho.

Re: K-Drama: 가시나무새 (The Thorn Birds)

I do remember the chopsticks scene, that was one of my favorite scenes of the episode.

However the second portion that finalized who YJ really was is a scene I don't recall. I could have spaced out for a minute perhaps, but I'm going to assume it was edited out - at least for my sake lol! emoticon

Thank you both for the answers/info on the edited scenes.

Re: K-Drama: 가시나무새 (The Thorn Birds)

Lyrics to the song "A Person Like You" performed by SG Wannabe (너란사람 - SG워너비), from the drama's OST. Lyric translation credits to dramaok:

애써 내 눈 가려보아도
애써 내 귈 막아보아도
그대 눈물이 보여 아픔이 들려
그댄 참 외로운 사람

Though I labor to close my eyes
Though I labor to block my ears
I see your tears, I hear your pain.
You are such a lonely person.

You are the one I yearn, the one I miss
Don't run away from me anymore
Though it pierces my heart, though the tears flow
I know your pains are greater than mine.

Though you labor to make a biting remark
Though you try to act tough again
You cannot deceive my eyes, and it aches me.
You are such a pitiful person.

You are the one I yearn, the one I miss
Don't run away from me anymore
Though it pierces my heart, though the tears flow
I know your pains are greater than mine.

Don't say a word, you just need to love
I know, that we are alike.
Though you make me cry again, though you push me away again
I know you, the one who resembles me.

A foolish person you are, such a foolish one.
No matter how you turn your head away
Such a dumb person you are, such a mean person.
You won't be able to take even one step away.

You are the one I yearn, the one I miss
Don't run away from me anymore.
Though it pierces my heart, though the tears flow
I know your pains are greater than mine

pretty much applies to the relationships in the drama, doesn't it?
