Re: K-Drama: 사랑을 믿어요 (My Love, My Family)

Ep 22 (Sun) - Summary (Part 1 of 2)

Dad suddenly remembers they have overlooked the memorial date for Yunhui‛s parents.

At the columbarium, Ujin is getting an education on people‛s feelings. As he looks at other displays there, it seems he has never encountered death and the pain survivors experience. He is profoundly affected as he watches Yunhui crying for her parents. Outside, Ujin and Yunhui drink and eat dried fish together at a picnic table on the grounds (it‛s late at night). About to miss the last bus, they run and barely catch it. Yunhui gets sleepy from the rice wine and falls asleep on Ujin‛s shoulder—another new (and increasingly comfortable) experience for him.

Deleted Scenes... class ul Ujin arrives home, his mom and dad reading in the living room. Mom walks on eggshells around Ujin these days but Dad starts yelling at him. I guess Dad wants to know where he was? But Dad‛s probably more upset about what he ate (or didn‛t eat) for dinner. Up in his room, Ujin flashes back to Yunhui crying at the columbarium, then catches himself and goes on with what he‛s doing.

At the main family home, Myeonghui finally comes out of her room to eat with the family. They make a big deal out of it, with Granny objecting and arguing.

Yeonghui goes to KBY. The guard recognizes her from her fence climbing day and tries to stop her from entering. She flashes her script and acts the big shot. Inside the building, she has a writing cubicle assigned to her. The PD calls her and she meets up with the other assistant/director.
Ki-chang having a hard time at his academy. His other instructor calls and resigns without notice. Meanwhile, Yeonghui is going out to lunch with the PD and the other guy. She calls her mother to go over and make dinner for the three boys.

Hyejin goes to the police department and signs the agreement to pay her brother‛s victim $50K. The victim‛s father doesn‛t like the idea—it isn‛t enough money for his son‛s future care, etc., but he signs anyway at the detective‛s urging.

The son is out of jail and Hyejin is on the floor in her old room at home. She tells her mother she needs to rest, so mom leaves her alone. Hyejin still doesn‛t know where she‛s going to get the money. She sees her graduation picture and sadly looks at the person she was back then. Just then Donghun calls and asks her pick up pork hocks on her way home—just what Hyejin needs to hear. Sheesh...

Sungwu at the University gallery with Hyejin‛s old professor. As they look at art, Sungwu is struck by a painting named "The Sad Magnolia." He stares at it, then notices it is by Hyejin. (While it is of a woman practically enshrined by magnolia blossoms, in the background on the path leading there are large splashes of bright red—a very aggressive color that clashes with the soft, muted pink and white hues of the woman and the flowers. It made me think of the magnolia tree and blossoms at her feet and all around her as a private world of beauty she has created for herself, the only place in which she is free to be herself. The path to her magnolia world is spotted with the red patches, which grow bolder the farther away they are from the flowers. This could well symbolize the great strife in her life at home, indicative of the horrors of life with her drunken, abusive father and pathetically weak mother. Her world of art was her only haven.)

Hyejin dragging herself home (with the pork hocks), gets a return call from her rich girlfriend. Hyejin wants to ask for a loan of the $50,000, but the conversation is awkward and is ended when the friend‛s MIL calls her.

Deleted Scene... class ul While the family eats pork hocks, Hyejin sits in her room alone, worried sick about where to get the money.

Over at Ki-chang‛s apartment, he comes home to find his MIL there waiting for him. Apparently, she has already fed the boys and has been waiting to feed the late-arriving Ki-chang.
The smallest son rats to his father what MIL had said, that Yeonghui will soon be rich and famous and way beyond Ki-chang; that MIL was laughing on the phone to her friend that Ki-chang "deserves" what he‛s getting. Ki-chang is upset, but what can he do? He begrudingly eats dinner that MIL has prepared... as she still can‛t stop from giggling.

Ep 22 - Part 2 of 2

Myeonghui goes to the Soup Café, bringing a gift of thanks to Cheolsu. She‛s still depressed, but he cheers her up by talking with her then singing a funny song. As Cheolsuk leaves the café it looks as though she‛s suspicious about Myeonghui and Cheolsu and won‛t like it if they get together.

As Yunhui and her dad leave for work, Ujin comes roaring up in his Rising Star junkmobile with the flames. He gives them a ride to work and almost rear ends another car when Dad asks Yunhui who went with her to the columbarium. A friend, she answers. Ujin is wondering what she's going to say, especially when Dad pushes for the name of this "friend." Dad knows Yunhui is trying to avoid answering, and then asks if she has a boyfriend? Whatever Ujin is thinking, he is a little panicked by what she might say and this is when he nearly rear-ends another car.

Hyejin at a bank is turned down on her load application. Returning to work totally discouraged, she gets a call from her father, yelling at her for bailing her brother out of jail. Hyejin is at her breaking point and finally tells her father off (mildly) and to keep out of it, she will handle the money problem. She cries after she hangs up. The secretary comes in to announce that Sungwu has arrived.

Hyejin wipes her tears and goes to Sungwu‛s office. She is unusually quiet, though Sungwu tries to break the ice. He has her come over and sit down—they are sponsoring a new program to send art students abroad to study. [Maybe they can send Hyejin's brother...] He wants her to check out the program to see if everything is in order. He realizes she has been crying, but she always denies everything. She leaves his office, but starts thinking about Sungwu as a source of the $50K loan. She goes back and hesitatingly asks him for "a favor," a "personal favor." It is extremely difficult for her to finally get the words out asking for a loan of money. Sungwu makes a phone call and arranges the money to be transferred to her account. As he starts to leave the office, she tells him the money is to get her neglected brother out of jail after an unfortunate accident. Sungwu stops her, saying it isn‛t necessary for her to tell him the details. He tells her that after the way he brought her to the gallery, she shouldn‛t feel burdened over this. He thanks her for coming to him over the matter and leaves.

Later at home, Hyejin is sleepless. At the same time, Sungwu sits in his apartment drinking wine. As the camera pulls back, we see he is staring at The Sad Magnolia.

At the gallery after work, Hyejin is cataloging newly arrived paintings. As she rounds a corner she is stunned to see The Sad Magnolia hanging on the wall. Sungwu is leaving the building. Seeing a light still on in one area, he goes there. Hyejin is standing, staring at the painting. As he talks to her, she turns to him, barely able to control her tears. She begins sobbing uncontrollably. Sungwu doesn‛t understand what is happening with her... Is it me, he asks? She can‛t say anything... she only continues sobbing. Sungwu puts his left arm around her shoulder and she leans her face on his chest as she sobs. He puts his other arm around her, holding her close. Sungwu doesn‛t understand what she is feeling, only that she needs to be comforted. [Very nice, well-executed scene. I loved the expressions on Sungwu‛s face.]

I'm hopeful that now that writer mom is going to become successful, she gives up her bag lady look and opts for an upgrade in her style. She's so disgusting to me, I can barely look at her.

I hope Lee Pilmo's character becomes more mature. I can't stand him in this and I love Lee Pilmo. I feel he's totally wasted and trying too hard.

It wasn`t clear how the 50K would be repaid. Salary deduction etc. This might be a source of friction in future episodes,or might draw her closer to Sangwu.

Re: K-Drama: 사랑을 믿어요 (My Love, My Family)

Since the women take care of the finances in the family, it might not be too difficult for Hyejin to pay back the loan 'under the radar.' Especially since Donghun seems mostly driven by what is directly under his nose—like playing with Rani or eating dinner. He's not exactly a man who sits back and analyzes the bigger picture, even when he sees his wife obviously in some sort of on-going emotional trauma. Another possible source of $$ might be that Hyejin starts painting again. (There's at least one person we know who would probably buy every single canvas she produces.)

Hyejin keeps all her woes to herself. She's not likely to burden Donghun with the problems of her family (of which she is ashamed), nor did she open up and tell Sungwu, either. She only felt she owed Sungwu an explanation for why she was borrowing a large amount of money (to help her brother). If it hadn't been for that, Hyejin would not have told Sungwu anything about her personal problems, just as she didn't tell Donghun.

As for Ujin, I wish you could enjoy him, Smoochie, but I know how it is—if we don't like a character for some reason, not much is going to change our feelings. I see both Ujin and Yunhui as very immature, inexperienced, child-like people in their emotional lives. So much so that they make a very well-matched couple. If each of them didn't feel a very strong attraction to the other, they wouldn't always be embroiled in their tit-for-tat warfare. They protest, but they both seek the other out and keep it going.

I find myself having a big smile on my face whenever Ujin is on the screen in this one—Ujin is just funny to me in a ridiculous sort of way. And I think Lee Pilmo is playing him incredibly well. I realize, though, that if Ujin were a serious, dramatic character, I would probably dislike him, too.

nchristi,

I agree with your feeling about Ujin. I think he brings a smile to my face when he pops up. The mutual to and fro between him and the teacher is so well set. You can sense this is one story that has a begining and a middle and surely a happy ending. They wont' turn into a lovey dovey melt down because she has such personal 'returnfire back' in her. They will definitely be a happy couple in the future I feel sure. A lot of give and take with them will make them an interesting couple.

I am totally turned off by the art director and vice director. This is a very remote and uncomfortable pairing. First and foremost they are both married to other people so that is the first barrier. In Korean families they would not be where they are now with their supposed personal attraction. Someone would have set limits and blocked any approaches. However, as I have said before, I think she is not a moral person and has no love or regard for her husband or child, and certainly does not like having to do things as a daughter in law for the family. She is selfish in that she really wants to be free to do her own thing in life and not have any responsibility for others at all. I find her most unattractive human being.

Re: K-Drama: 사랑을 믿어요 (My Love, My Family)

I felt Sangwu did whatever he could to keep his distance but I suppose that was too much for him considering he's already fallen totally for Hyejin.

I was glad Sangwu told Hyejin it wasn't necessary for her to explain why she needed the money. He didn't care what it was for... it was for her!

On the other hand, I cannot for the life of me understand why she wouldn't go to her husband. Even if she borrowed the money from Sangwu, she should tell her husband so he knows what happened (he's interested in her family too)... He could help Hyejin pay the money back.

I love Ujin because I enjoy watching him beginning to fall in love. I think they are a cute couple and hope the silly antics won't get out of hand with them (like with 3 sons mom/dad).

I thought the 3rd son telling his dad what grandma said was hilarious. He was so cute siding w/his dad. I like all the kids. The oldest so mature and responsible. #2 son was cute when he had his crush on Hyejin. And now #3 trying to get in good w/pops. They are all good kids.

Re: K-Drama: 사랑을 믿어요 (My Love, My Family)

Interesting and varied points of view. I myself can relate to the overall sentiment as there are times that I find the series too discrete and not progressive enough, at times it just feels a bit stagnant. I do find some moments where it becomes more than just something to watch. This weekend, I rather enjoyed the developments with the relationship of the pairs with Ujin and Yunhui both showing signs of liking each other, but haven't found the courage to admit it yet, Soup Boy and Yunhui's sister... I particularly enjoyed these scenes where Soup Boy (Cheolsu) showed quite a lot of care for her - she has had a string of vapid relationships, and Soup Boy could be her cure for a loving and stable relationship.

nchristi Very much agree with your view on HyeJin not going to DH issue and your post on the symbolism of the painting.

I'm continually surprised with the complex nuances in this series in the way it tells the story and exposes character traits. class blockquote nsheldon wrote:

This was one of my favorite scenes of the episode. That kid was so believable in that scene, just like the middle brother and HJ scene some months ago when she praised him... and in this scene watching Ki-Chang's expressions cracked me up - I don't like his character, but I continue to like the actor's performance. Ki-Chang and his wife's comedic antics used to annoy me a lot, but I find myself continually warming up to the series' brand of comedy and now am sort of enjoying Ki-Chang and his wife's scenes. They are both still overbearing and extreme, but I hope they will continue to a point of progress where they can be good parents and good for and to each other.
