Re: K-Drama: 웃어라 동해야 (Smile Again)

The new story will again end up with the poor girl getting the hero, short track skater and her mother's friends daughter getting the rich spoiled son. It seems so predictable with a slight twist of the mentally challenged mother who is probably the daughter of the elderly couple.

Re: K-Drama: 웃어라 동해야 (Smile Again)

Here‛s an introduction to the characters and story, covering Ep 1–3. (Courtesy of Zealioner at Just Dramas) class ul Dong-hae (Ji Chang-wook) also known as Carl Laker, is Korean by ethnicity and American by nationality. He and his team have just won the short track competition and are heading to Korea for a competition. He brings along his mother, Anna (Do Ji-won), in secret as competitors are not allowed to bring their family on the trip.

Anna was adopted by American parents when she lost her family as a kid. She’s also an unwed mother and a constant source of worry for Dong-hae because she has a slower intelligence. The identity of Dong-hae’s father is unknown so far, but we know that his Korean name is initialed by K.J. and goes by James. The circumstances are unknown but it seems K.J. has jilted Anna, the reason that Dong-hae hates the father he has never known. Anna is still hung up on her former lover which irritates Dong-hae although he loves his mother dearly.

The only person Dong-hae knows in Korea is his girlfriend, Yoon Sae-wa (Park Jung-ah), an ambitious broadcast announcer who’s aiming her sights at the position of a prime-time TV news announcer but faces competition constantly. Sae-wa had lived with Dong-hae and Anna for six years when she was in the States. She loves Dong-hae but does not extend the same affection for Anna because of her disability, something that Dong-hae is unaware of.

When Dong-hae arranges for Sae-wa to meet his mother at the airport, she trades in the promise for a chance to stand-in for a colleague on a live TV program. She calls a family friend, Bong-yi (Oh Ji-eun), to go in her place instead, thus creating the first meeting for Bong-yi and Dong-hae. Dong-hae had expected to see Se-wa but when he sees Anna leaving with Bong-yi, he panics, gives chase and Bong-yi’s hand is injured during the misunderstanding.

Bong-yi is an assistant chef, supposed to be married to a rich guy. That guy turned out to be a wimp and a mama’s boy, and mama isn’t exactly approving of the marriage. So, Bong-yi’s family gets humiliated for being poor and the marriage is called off. This episode acquaints us with a little of Bong-yi’s family history. It turns out that Bong-yi’s family wasn’t poor from the beginning. They were in fact rather well-off as her parents had owned a kimchi factory. Their business collapsed overnight, when they were implicated in an unethical food business scandal, thanks to some irresponsible news reporting by a then-journalist, Kim Joon.

Kim Joon has now moved up in his social status and is chief of the broadcast station where Sae-wa works. He’s married to Hye-sook but their relationship looks one-sided as she’s constantly trying to please him but he’s stern and snaps at her at whim. His relationship with his son Do-jin (Lee Jang-woo) isn’t chummy either. He criticizes his player ways and Do-jin is annoyed by his father’s distant attitude towards his mother.

Hye-sook is now the director of the Camellia Hotel; her tenure has spanned 30 years, rising up the ranks from a secretary. She’s emotionally bitter because of how her husband treats her and because she has been hoping that her close ties with the Chairman and his wife (of the hotel) would allow her to replace their daughter, Dong-baek who they lost during a typhoon decades ago.

Still, they continue to harbor hopes that Dong-baek is alive somewhere, and the missus has even entrusted Hye-sook to continue the search should she depart someday. However, Kim Joon questions Hye-sook‛s true motives – is she hoping to be their daughter, or really wanting to inherit the hotel that comes with being their daughter?

To add a dose of lightness is the young couple, Tae-hoon (Alex) and Sae-young (Joo-yeon). The former is Bong-yi’s elder brother who is taking his public prosecutor examinations for the umpteenth time. But this time has to be his last and successful try because his girlfriend, Sae-young is pregnant with twins and they need to get married fast. And I foresee Sae-young’s mother backing them into a hellhole because she is absolutely not getting her family involved with the likes of poverty (although she forgets that their roles were once reversed).

So at the end of Episode 3, we see Dong-hae raising a fit at Anna for lingering on K.J. and he makes it clear to her that his only purpose here is to win the championship title and then ask Sae-wa to marry him. He has no need for anyone else in his life except for Anna and Sae-wa!

Sae-wa’s mother, Sool-nyeo is sending herself into an anxiety fit when Sae-wa did not come home. She becomes paranoid about her safety and is hesitating outside the police station about lodging a police report. She’s momentarily distracted by Pil-jae’s (Bong-yi’s widower uncle and also a cop) heroism when he stops an offender from making his escape…

Sae-wa wakes up in a hotel room and immediately decides that Do-jin must have taken advantage of her when she was drunk, since he is determined to woo her. She slaps him, and then realizes that it’s a misunderstanding.

Meanwhile, Bong-yi who is still unable to get in touch with Sae-wa is getting increasingly concerned and wonders if Sae-wa had spent the night with Dong-hae? She heads for the hotel and then gets a shock when from a corner, she sees Sae-wa exiting a room with Do-jin! And then it’s Sae-wa’s turn to get a shock when Dong-hae steps out from the elevator, tremendously pleased to see her…….

Thanks for the re-cap nchristi. I would still like to know more about the Mother`s mental problems, and her pregnancy. I assume they came after she was adopted and moved to the US. I think a good pairing would be the girl with the sprained wrist and the guy who works at the hotel, since his father was responsible for her family`s poverty.

You're welcome, everybody! Zealioner at Just Dramas has a special talent to summarize clearly and concisely. I admire her ability because I am so annoyingly wordy! class blockquote sherlesin wrote: I would still like to know more about the Mother`s mental problems, and her pregnancy. I assume they came after she was adopted and moved to the US. I'm curious, too. Anna seems to have been 'lost' when she was quite a young girl, and adopted in or to a couple in the States. My guess is that Anna was born with her limited mental capacity, then as a young adult got involved with KJ (Carl's bio-father). This could have happened in the States, with KJ returning to Korea... or Anna and her parents might have been visiting Korea and she got involved with KJ there. We don't know whether he really loved her but left due to circumstances beyond his control, or if he simply took advantage of her and disappeared. According to the synopses around, KJ is in Seoul and Carl (skater) will soon be on a mission to locate KJ, his bio-father. With each episode, we are learning more. Perhaps we will soon have all our background questions answered.

Re: K-Drama: 웃어라 동해야 (Smile Again)

I love seeing Alex in this. I loved him in Pasta too. He's a singer. And I think he's very good at acting too.

I'm puzzled by something. Carl's mother has a picture of herself as a young girl about 5 or 6 years old. Where'd she get that picture if she was 'lost'? Doesn't seem to logical that a small child lost during a hurricane would end up somehow with the same picture that her bio parents have.

Also, there must be a good story as to her mental condition because she seemed perfectly 'normal' when they showed her as a child. We'll see how that happened.

And KJ (Carl's bio dad) is probably going to be involved later on. I wonder how he disappeared from Carl's mom's life. Maybe it's that stern guy... the CEO over that news show. Maybe he is KJ. You know how they like to tie everyone together in these dramas!

Re: K-Drama: 웃어라 동해야 (Smile Again)

I just saw episode 1 tonight and I believe Uncle Pil Jae is the same actor who played Geum Soon's BIL. I haven't seen this actor in anything else. Is it the same guy?

I thought Anna was Dong Hae's younger sister. I'm sure she's his mother, but she looks so young, I didn't get it right away.

The actress playing Bong Yi is Oh Ji Eon, the same actress who played Cookie in 3 Brothers. At least she looks bright and cheerful in this one, for a girl who was dumped, I mean.

I've been trying to catch this when I can remember to. I think the story is sofar interesting but hope they won't make it dragging by the 100+ episodes.

One thing I'm curious is the wedding dress Donghae's room. Is that suppose to be his mom's dress or for Saewa?
I didn't catch the very first episode.
