Non viewable subtitles

I recently had total failure in reading subs in a video I bought.
The English subs were there ,but they were being cut off until only the tops of the letters appeared. The subs ran along the bottom of the screen and there was no way to roll them up for visibilty.

Is this something that I can fix or is it the fault of the video and nothing can be done.?

If anyone has any ideas I would be happy to know. Thanks.

Peggy

Re: Non viewable subtitles

Peg, I think something similar also happened to me a few months ago while I was watching a DVD (which also had English subtitles). There was a "Zoom" option on my remote control, so I must have accidentally pressed that. All of a sudden, whatever was being displayed on the screen became much larger, and I could only see the very top of the English subtitles (the bottom was cut off). I pressed the Zoom button on my remote control, and the screen (and the subtitles) returned to normal. I'm still wondering how I pressed the Zoom button on the remote though, LOL! emoticon

Are the letters the only part of the screen that are being cut off? Or are there other parts of the screen that are being cut off as well?

I'm with Greg on this one, it is possible that the screen is zoomed in. Try looking for a Zoom or Picture Size button on your remote controls.

Non viewable subtitles

Thanks Greg and Moises.
will look into this and re read the TV manual. I know that there are two or three ways of setting up the size of the picture on the screen.

Peg-san, no problem! emoticon

Yeah, the manual should have information on how to set up and adjust the size of the picture displayed on the TV screen. Hopefully the subtitles will return back to their normal size when the size of the screen is adjusted, too.

Re: Non viewable subtitles

Check both the DVD and TV manuals.

If the picture seems to be missing the bottom only when watching DVDs, it's probably a DVD zoom issue. If the picture always seems to be missing the bottom, then it's probably a TV setting issue. (But sometimes you have the DVD and normal broadcasting on different TV inputs and TV settings can be per-input, making it hard to tell which component is at fault.)

Regarding TV manuals, I have a couple of Sony TVs. One is a HD LCD set, and one is an older analog non-HD Wega. The HD manual documents various TV zoon settings, but the Wega manual does not. To learn how to adjust the analog TV picture settings, you have to pay for the super-secret TV repairman manual for the set (which I have).

Re: Non viewable subtitles

Thank you guys for all the information. You know I will get to this problem the next time it happens. Right now I am dabbling in other stuff. I have only so much time in the 24 and so far I am managing to get about five or six hours sleep. I don't think my doctor would be pleased to hear this...

I have to read small print in manuals during the daytime. Impossible at night even with the bright 'daylight'lamp. Hell to get old especially when so many interesing gadgets and stuff are comng into my life.

I am resisting that new Palm Pre but it looks fascinating. Also I think I have to stay with just one new TV. Not sure I can afford more til I have done the taxes. :-(

Ccwf, nice to hear from you again! emoticon

My brother had a similar issue while he was watching a DVD yesterday, too. The movie he was watching was in English and didn't have subtitles, but he was complaining to me that the picture was zoomed in. He must have accidentally clicked on the "Zoom" button on the remote control (like I had done when I had a similar problem), so I pressed the button a couple of times and the picture re-adjusted to the regular size.

Ahh, that Palm Pre looks great, Peg! I was just checking the design out on the Palm.com website. I wonder when it is coming out? The website said "Coming Soon". I want one too, LOL! emoticon
