I was flipping channels yesterday on TimeWarner and was curious to see if they had replaced the AZN slot with any other channel. Sure enough, the entire slot was deleted, so they probably haven't figured out what to put in that spot yet. I hope TimeWarner adds TV Japan or something (they already have CCTV and KBS - so they're missing a free channel with Japanese programming).nondisclosed_email@example.com (Hiroshi66)Wed, 16 Apr 2008 08:32:02 +0000 Re: **Breaking News** AZN TV to Shut Down April 9https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2022643,from=rss#post2022643https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2022643,from=rss#post2022643Being a relatively "new" but avid fan of AZN & it's programming, I find this news VERY distressing!! I was totally unaware of the situation until this weekend when I saw the promos announcing that Wednesday was the last "air day" I enjoyed the dramas that were replayed during primetime, late night movies, & music video shows on the weekend (Music Bang) & will miss them. I may not be Asian but am very fond of the culture & thought of AZN as the perfect outlet for learning of the culture!! Will there be another channel, specifically on Charter in L.A., that will have a "new" channel devoted to Asian programming? What about the J-dramas that aired on the weekends...like "Life" on Sundays at 8 pm?? If you have a digital TV (or an analog TV and buy a ATSC digital-to-analog converter box with the gov. $40 coupon) and an antenna, then you don't have to pay Comcast. One station is channel 26-2, known as MBC America, and the other is channel 36-2, known as KTVNnc (Korean TV Network Northern California). According to thier web sites, they broadcast weekly drama, movies, game shows, etc. 24-hours/day. But I think what makes LA-18 rather successful is their commercials of local Asian businesses that people outside of the community wouldn't normally hear about. For instance, when I watch Japanese television, I notice that over half of the ads aired are for local markets, restaurants, and stores. Some of my favorite Japanese restaurants have been discovered through commercials during drama watching. I'm sure the same is done during the Korean and Chinese programming blocks. AZN needed more of that. On another note, it seems Fuji TV has struck a deal with ImaginAsian. Just look at the ads they aired. Not McDonalds, not Target, not Gap, not Toyota. It's all infomercial type gadgets and products. So, either they did a poor job of selling ads or the advertisers just don't think AZN reaches a broad enough audience to warrant spending ad bucks. Which raises the question of whether AZN was a poorly designed concept (can a single station appeal to an audience that speaks several different languages?) or simply a poorly executed one. Well, I guess they did mean well in the beginning -- I think AZN came out before ImaginAsian did and thus they tried to expand on the concept that LA-18 had been doing (combining Asian programming from Japan to India) but maybe it was the advertisement that wasn't strong enough. UTB always airs ads that are good for the Japanese community in Los Angeles -- whether it be markets, bookstores, services for learning English, banks, etc. But AZN didn't seem to take that path. But then again, AZN was a nationwide channel so it would be hard to advertise local stores and markets. UTB can do it because its native to LA, but AZN would have a hard time trying to cater to the entire nation in its advertisements. I am sad to see that AZN is shutting down. I got hooked on Kdramas on this channel. I guess I will have to stick to Cdramas w/o subs. As for AZN being a national channel and therefore unable to get local advertisements seems odd because when I watch national sports the advertisements are of local companies in the area. Maybe it is a harder get the local companies but if you do not ask then the advertisers will not know there is this option to show off their products and services to various different segments of the population. Actually the problem may be that the audience is too diverse and ad people at comcast could not identify a target audience. People are funny we have to put people in catgories or else I guess the the cable company cannot charge properly for the advertising. nondisclosed_email@example.com (ras893)Mon, 11 Feb 2008 22:47:09 +0000 Re: **Breaking News** AZN TV to Shut Down April 9https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2020444,from=rss#post2020444https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2020444,from=rss#post2020444No problem NaijaChica! There were Croatian, Hungarian, and I think Czech programs at certain times. I'm sure those communities appreciated it as well. But I think their bad management was the main reason for being shut down. Even though they've improved with the kdrama programming in the past year, the station has been otherwise useless so this really doesn't come as a surprise at all. Narrowing it to AZN might have been a mistake but it might have worked if they hadn't gotten rid of their much better programming in like 2006. Just a pretty terrible station. nondisclosed_email@example.com (NaijaChica)Thu, 31 Jan 2008 09:49:41 +0000 Re: **Breaking News** AZN TV to Shut Down April 9https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2020328,from=rss#post2020328https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2020328,from=rss#post2020328IIRC, AZNTV originally started out as the International Channel. It had much more diverse programming, not just Asian. I guess the idea of worldwide programming appealing to US demographics is an idea whose time has not yet come. Narrowing it to the Asian demographic (as well as changing the name to AZNTV) seemed to focus the channel, at the expense of losing some viewer markets. I really miss those French art house films. I suppose thats when the downward spiral started, to where we are now, discussing the demise of a source of KDrama programming. nondisclosed_email@example.com (hantaejun)Thu, 31 Jan 2008 09:22:11 +0000
