posticon K-Movie: 화산고 火山高 (Volcano High)

…since there's no Korean movies topic, I noticed that MTV2 is airing the Korean fantasy & martial arts movie Volcano High again on Thursday night [Apr 11].
Well, even though I posted here to let others know this Korean-made, MTV-dubbed movie was coming up, I didn't bother to record it since, frankly, Korean-made movies and MTV don't exactly have a reputation for excellence. Nevertheless, TiVo decided to record it as a suggestion for me; and, being in a weird mood at about 04:00 this morning, I decided to watch a bit of it to be, hopefully, amused by its awfulness. Surprisingly, what I saw was actually good; so I stopped it and watched the whole thing after getting up today. As reviewer Warwick Gaetjens wrote in his thorough Region 2 DVD review: class blockquote It has taken decades for the world to take notice of the Korean Film Industry, but even with all the quality period pieces generated by these very talented folk, they've had to create a typical Hollywood-style futuristic flick for anyone to realise they even exist. […] And to top it all off, according to Bey Logan, when Jackie Chan was filming his 1970s Lo Wei induced nightmares in Korea, he and his fellow filmmakers would often look over the other side of the hill and laugh at the relatively pathetic attempts of the locals to create their own celluloid masterpieces.

There are many reasons why Korean movies remain in relative obscurity, but it mainly has to do with the amount of cash at their disposal, or lack thereof, for production and distribution. This has not stopped them in pursuing the echelons that Hong Kong has enjoyed for over three decades, and through sheer persistence alone they have been able to turn the tide with their golden lovechild Volcano High.

[…] The over-the-top music and sound effects are just as important as the bizarre visuals […]. And whilst it can't out-matrix The Matrix, it does a fine job of emulating it by copying some of the lesser signature moves, recreating the master-student training sequence and maybe even reproducing some of the hokey dialogue as well ... and is even more enjoyable than M2&3 combined!
Read the full review above for more info about the non-MTV versions of the movie.

Now, keep in mind that the reviewer above wrote that the Korean soundtrack has hokey dialogue and over-the-top music. The MTV version tries to go a step further by replacing the music with a hip-hop soundtrack and getting folks such as Snoop Dog, Method Man, and Pat Morita to dub the voices. emoticon The MTV version takes other liberties, too: they dub from the shorter International version [by twenty minutes] rather than the fuller Korean version; judging from the review above, it omits some of the plot points (battling for the Sacred Manuscript, Chi power in phase 10); the shower scene is censored; and subtitling is loose (e.g., xml:lang ko-KR 學院五人房 is translated as “The Five Great Cleaners” in the R2 version but THE SUBSTITUTES in the MTV version, not that I understand how the R2 folks got “Great Cleaners” out of xml:lang ko-KR 人房 either unless that means something very different in Korean than it does in Chinese and Japanese).

Which brings me to another point: There's a lot of xml:lang ko-KR 漢字 (Hanja) in this movie. I came into this movie expecting to find 한글 (Hangul), it being a Korean movie after all, and a little 漢字. But there's a lot of xml:lang ko-KR 漢字. The opening credits use both xml:lang ko-KR 한글 and xml:lang ko-KR 漢字. The walls of the school are decorated with xml:lang ko-KR 漢字. The Sacred Manuscript is all xml:lang ko-KR 漢字. Many of the documents shown use xml:lang ko-KR 漢字 or mixes of 한글 and xml:lang ko-KR 漢字 like xml:lang ko-KR 特記事項、退學、and “ xml:lang ko-KR 火山門派召集会議 그들은 면합부대?” (Sorry, that xml:lang ko-KR 한글 almost certainly makes no sense—keep in mind, I can't read it at all and am just semi-randomly hitting keys on my keyboard until I get something that resembles the tiny symbols I'm struggling to see on the TV. emoticon ) Now, can most Koreans actually read this much text in xml:lang ko-KR 漢字? It was my impression that they've become increasingly rare in modern Korean (and I rarely see them in the bits of K-Dramas I've watched). I'm guessing Volcano High makes a point of using far more than usual in order to give the movie a mystical feel. For the English-only folks, don't worry—MTV doesn't expect you to be able to read all those symbols; the important stuff is translated (again, loosely).

Again, the plot is thin (and MTV makes it thinner); but it's an enjoyable piece of candy.

Overall rating: 7/10 "Great taste, less filling"

Snoop Dog: We used to watch Master of the Flying Guillotine and Five Fingers of Death, like, every Saturday.

i heard about this movie in some anime magazine...is it a good movie?...and why the hell do they have to dub the voices and change the soundtrack? if they're gonna do that, they shouldn't have done anything w/ the movie at all...besides, mtv made it worse!

This is MTV we're talking about—I don't expect them to be showing subs instead of dubs any time soon. I think we're lucky that MTV2 shows any anime and Asian films at all.
