Here‛s a good web site for background on Miyazawa Kenji .
Thanks very much for the link to that site. Re: J-Movie: わが心の銀河鉄道 宮沢賢治物語 (Night Train to the Stars)

From the website:classblockquoteKenji possessed both finely-honed scientific observational powers and an enduring childlike spirit. He journeyed back and forth between a levelheaded observation of the real world and an imaginary, mythological world, and was able to bind the two together. You could say that Kenji was at the same time a scientist and a shaman----he transcended boundaries, mediating between both sides.
For Kenji, fantasy was not an illusion, but "a place and a time where my mind has surely traveled before" (from an advertisement for The Restaurant of Many Orders). Kenji believed that no matter how strange or curious it may seem, imaginings born from the deep recesses of our minds contain an element of truth.
I'm finding this website an integral part of more fully appreciating Miyazawa Kenji, a beautiful combination of Pirsig's classic and romantic personality types. What a rare find. (I surely would have liked to have traveled with him for a while on that Night Train. Another time, another place, another dimension.)

I don't remember all of what happened, but some captions to go with the pictures above might help.classulclassli1: Having been chided at the end of part one by his (only) friend for not understanding others, Kenji, with disgust, eats some meat at a restaurant in an attempt to gain understanding.classli2: His sister is worse. Kenji reads her the draft of what will become his first book, The Restaurant of Many Orders, a collection of children's stories.classli3: Kenji advocates that farming is a performance art. See Nancy's site linked to above for more info on this view.classli4: Kenji is published. The title is xml:langja-JP雪渡り (“Snow Crossing” or “Crossing the Snow”).classli5: His sister dies about this time. This scene from Kenji's stories is one of his sister's favorites.classli6: Kenji explains to a fellow teacher how he draws inspiration from nature.classli7: example of Kenji's imaginationclassli8: another example from a sequence involving riding a train through the starsclassli9–10: Kenji sees many copies of his book, The Restaurant of Many Orders, which is not selling well at bookstores. He asks his father for money to buy his own books.classli11: He meets his (only) friend from the very start of the movie. They talk about the reality of farming vs. their previous, idealized views of it. His friend has met and married a woman who shares his farming dream.classli12: Explaining that Kenji's stories are set in an idealized version of reality.classli13: More explanation. Here, Kenji has abandoned teaching at the agricultural college and has become a farmer.

English translation of “The Restaurant of Many Orders” (remember, Miyazawa, Kenji is a vegetarian)

Re: J-Movie: わが心の銀河鉄道 宮沢賢治物語 (Night Train to the Stars)

So exactly what year did this film end?

Also - I think we can learn a lot about Nichiren-shu Buddhism here (It is mentioned as Hokke but it is basically an old name for Nichiren-shu) and about the conflicts of Buddhism and Shintoism in Japan. (I think Kenji's family were Shinshu Buddhists which is a secular form of the religion).

Miyazawa died in 1933. There were some brief wrap-up scenes that took place after that, however.
