Thanks for the list, ccwf.

Has anyone heard of the Trick movie? What is it set after, and is there a chance of it airing in the U.S, either on tv or in a Japanese theatre?

Re: Upcoming Movies

Are there any theatres in the So-Cal area that are like the old revivial ones that ran movies in 2 to 3 day runs. I remember going to one in Long Beach and spending like about 6 hours there watching the Samurai trilogy. Thats so long ago that I don't even remember who I went with, the theatres name, or where in Long Beach that was.
Man I would love to see a film with sub-titles again. Even something as nasty a Battle Royale, or Versus or better still that new movie by the same director Kitamura.

Re: Upcoming Movies

In my area of Northern Los Angeles, there are NO Asian theatres, even with the majority status of Koreans here. For sure in Little Tokyo and kinda sure for Chinatown, there are no theatres that show Japanese, Chinese, or Taiwanese movies. But they aired a Taiwanese movie last night on cable.

You might try looking for theatres that play other foreign language films and artistic indie pics. That's where I usually discover Asian films playing in my area. Occasionally, films like that pop up at my local multiplexes, as well. Although it's an Asian-American film, one of my multiplexes got "Better Luck Tommorow." Anyone see that?

I once tried watching "Empire of the Sun," but was bored out of my mind. It's along the lines of "A Son of the Good Earth," only it involves a 10-year-old British boy stuck in China during World War II. I don't know how far into the future the film progresses, but I think it mostly focuses on the World War II period. It just didn't grab me like "A Son of the Good Earth" did.

The movie empie of the sun ends after the Liberation and his reunion with his parents.
   The sleds name was Rosebud.
   Ane the thirtynine steps are..Bang!.....gasp....thump...
Sorry but Son of the Good Earth just too too long, and the story thread didn't build at the pace I needed, even with VCRing. Empire of the Sun was a mere 3 hours or so.

I saw parts of Empire of the Sun. I had mentioned it in another post; nice analogy of the Japanese treatment of the British in Japaneseoccupied China.

Maybe I'll have to give the movie another try someday. All I remember about it is being really bored while I watched a pre-pubescent Christian Bale (an actor I really like now that he's grown-up) play in a field and tell some adult he didn't believe in God. At least when Son of the Good Earth had slow points, I had a cute guy to enjoy looking at. emoticon I imagine, though, that Empire probably has some powerful stuff happen later in the film, so I really should give it another chance.

I realize I haven't seen too many Japanese films. I saw the end (dang it) of Shall We Dance? and would love to see the whole thing, but it's always checked out at my video store, believe it or not. There are a few other films I'd like to see, but they're pretty hard to get here.

Of the ones on ccwf's list, I've seen Sayonara, which is good, and Mr. Baseball, which I love, even though I probably shouldn't.

Re: Upcoming Movies

In Empire of the Sun, you have to have some kind of knowledge of ASian history.

The British had controlled parts of Shanghai since the 1800s. The Chinese were treated like sub-humans in the British sector. But when World War II broke out, and it appeared that Britain would be occupied by Nazi Germany (the London bombing raid) the Japanese, who had already occupied Shanghai, stormed into the British sector, lowered the British Union Jack, and raised the Japanese Rising Sun flag.

That's why, it was a powerful scene when we saw the Chinese watching their British overlords be sent to the camps.
