J-Special: 第55回NHK紅白歌合戦 (55th Annual NHK Song Festival/Contest)

Since not everyone might have seen the discussion here and here, KSCI is showing the annual NHK song festival on New Year's eve. This program is extremely popular in Japan since it always features tons of famous singers.

This year's performers include, well, frankly a bunch of people I don't know since I don't listen to tons of J-pop. But I see Gackt, who's been mentioned a lot in posts; Hirahara, Ayaka performing “Jupiter”; John xml:lang ja-JP Nuzzo performing the Shinsengumi! theme; the Gospellers; Morning Musume; and many others. For the full list of performers and what I assume they will be performing, see the official page. For a list of performers in English (and what they will be performing in Thai), see this KIKU fan page.

Interesting information, ccwf. Some new info I haven't heard before in the other posts.. the Shinsengumi theme? Cool.. its quite catchy. A foreigner is preforming it?

Here's John Nuzzo's ICM profile page (in English). That page lists him as an American born in Tokyo who went to college at Chapman here in Southern California.

John xml:lang ja-JP Nuzzo's official site gives more details, saying his father is Italian-American and his mother is Japanese and that he went to school in Tokyo.

Is there another NHK-related special airing New Year's Eve though?

Also, when I started this topic, I didn't realize nchristi had already started a topic for this Kouhaku musical special. The main post there includes a very interesting article in English about this annual event.

(Kouhaku or Kohaku is the romanization of xml:lang ja-JP 紅白, which are the characters for red and white. Red and white are the colors of the two teams in this event and are also festival colors. Those studying Japanese or Chinese may also wish to note that xml:lang ja-JP , deep red, is the usual word for red in Chinese but not in Japanese. Japanese more commonly uses xml:lang ja-JP , bright or scarlet red.)

So the Chinese use the word for bright red while the Japanese use the word for scarlet?
