J-Musical Program: Kohaku Utagassen (55th Annual)
[Question copied from a K-drama forum]classblockquotenchristi wrote:
Off topic, but did anybody see that program last week (and second half tonight also, I think) with the two Japanese singers (the woman in huge, elaborate, two-story high costumes)? One is a middle-aged woman, the other a middle-aged female impersonator. Does anyone know the name of the man who is the female impersonator? I used to see him on a group comedy talk show a few years back and always really liked him. I found him incredibly amusing and interesting even though there were no English subtitles! Thx. [Edit: I believe the program was on at 9:00p, either KXLA or KSCI.]

I can't believe I stumbled across your post on that show here (since I'm rarely in this section of the board and just popped in to post about Winter Sonata showing on DISH and some cable systems starting in January), but, yes, I watched about a third of part one and a few minutes of tonight's second part. The show is, I believe, just a run-up/promo/backgrounder for the ?55?NHK????? that airs New Year's eve, focusing on two of the popular singers from these yearly festivals/contests (official page for this year's show).
I believe the woman (red team) is ???? (Kobayashi, Sachiko) and that the man (white team) is ???? (Mikawa, Kenichi). Google searches on those names turn up some flamboyant costumes indeed.Thx, ccwf. This is the program and the particular celebrities for whose names I was looking. I knew the question didn‛t belong where I posted it, but the only fact at hand was that it was a Japanese program on at a particular time, so I chanced asking where I did, in hopes someone there could answer. (Fate)
Since I have never heard of this yearly program and all that it symbolizes, here is the article I (as an American) found provided the most understandable and comprehensive picture of what it‛s all about.

Thanks for your help - nchristi. Yes, this is probably from the NHK 55th anniversary special airing on 12/31.

I didn't realize a topic had been started for this program and so started a separate topic for xml:langja-JP第55回NHK紅白歌合戦.
And thanks for the link to that article—an interesting read.

This is so confusing!! I wonder why the Japanese stations decided to go crazy on us with these specials - there are so many different ones and they all overlap with our dramas..

Taiga drama comes near its end, Kouhaku airs on New Year's Eve, plus other movies are shown in hourly installments.

They have happened before, but not in such confusion.
First of all - the KXLA dramas last year didn't air two specials back-to-back (by specials I mean the movies) - KSCI aired one movie on New Year's eve but that was it. As for dramas - there were Sunday night dramas airing on KSCI - but now there aren't.

Re: J-Musical Program: Kohaku Utagassen (55th Annual)
One of the highlights for me was finally seeing Gackt perform. Very interesting. I was impressed too by the performance of the Shinsengumi theme. The first thing that struck me was how well the soloist did in the humming portion--which can actually be more difficult to perform well than open voice singing. And, of course, there's Mikawa, Kenichi, a performer of whom I never tire.
I didn't watch the entire program and just lucked out on seeing the people of primary interest to me. Going back and forth between this and the KBS Music Awards was really culture shock. For the Japanese Red Team, it seemed (costume-wise) to be the Year of Bjork. And the White Team finale of the man in kimono doing the samba and singing of senoritas, well, what can I say! I did find most delicious, however, the encompassing of all music types--from ancient traditional all the way to Orange Range.
Over on KBS, it seemed the Korean Wave was really the American Hip Hop/Rap Wave. Happy to see Bi win big time, though.

nchristi, just so u know, the KBS Music Awards was close to a 3hr event...KBS-LA cut a lot out. You might want to go view the uncut version yourself. I'm afraid KBS-LA is gonna cut out the good things of the KBS Drama Awards so I've d/led the raws and watching it at least twice already (surprisingly not bored w/ it at all)

Looking at the official page, it looks like it was aired in Japan in a 4hr 15min slot, repeating today in a 5hr slot. KSCI showed a 4hr 30min version.

Oh, there were some clips and a performance of a song from by an actress on the Korean drama xml:langko-KR아름다운 날들 (Beautiful Days). Sorry it took me so long to post about this segment. I fast forwarded through the drama clips and so didn't realize that's what they were. And once I did realize, it took me a long time to figure out that the drama as Beautiful Days since I can't read Korean.classblockquoteccwf wrote in the xml:langko-KR아름다운 날들 topic:

This drama aired in May on the International Channel.
[…] actress xml:langko-KR이정현 / Lee Jung Hyun / xml:langja-JPイ・ジョンヒョン (official site) performed her song “Heaven” (Japanese version) from this drama on the NHK New Year's Eve special on KSCI. Some clips from the drama were also shown. […] I'll post a couple of pictures later. If you want me to post more from this segment, ask quickly (before I delete it).
