J-Movie: Tokyo Godfathers (東京教父)
Like Perfect Blue, also by director xml:langja-JP今敏 (Kon, Satoshi) this unconventional film surprised me in many ways.
A homeless family of three discovers a baby, abandoned on Christmas, become its unofficial godparents, and try to find the baby's parents. Although we wonder for some time why we should care (i.e., the movie starts slowly), during their quest, the trio experience a succession of small miracles and serendipitous events that trigger the revelation and resolution of some of the personal issues that led to their homelessness. Just accept the recurring hand of providence: the movie is about the characters and not bound to realism, although it has many realistic, gritty elements.
The movie is filled with cultural references and broaches the rising and difficult issue of Tokyo's homeless (compare pictures here with those from the movie below). Christmas references also abound: Beethoven's Ninth (a Japanese Christmas tradition) during and at the end of the movie, other Christmas songs, and many uses of the numbers 12 and 25. Although the movie is rated PG-13, parents should be aware it contains a fair amount of crude language, some non-sexual nudity (breastfeeding), and a little violence.
The subject matter and style are not really to my taste, so I rate this movie a 7/10, although I can see why most give it 8/10.
Haikus
A little baby
powdery snow on its cheeks
on this holy night
My mother's white breath
as she watches me set out
on a long journey
On the year's last day
when all of a life's accounts
have been settled up

Re: Tokyo Godfathers (東京教父)
And here I'm looking for some really profound, hidden thing, like the degreaser "409" being an unacceptable product name in Japan.

Re: Tokyo Godfathers (東京教父)
Now I know that Tokyo Godfathers is on my Pay-per-view of my cable system but is it out in DVD. Also is T-G an homage to The Three Godfathers?

That's probably because the DVD (released in April) is English/French/Spanish/Portuguese subs only, no dub. Also, be warned that the Spanish dialogue (occurs in two scenes) is not subbed , at least in English. classblock blockquoteAlso is T-G an homage to The Three Godfathers? I've read that at least the title is an homage, yes.

Re: Tokyo Godfathers (東京教父)
I think this was on the Starz movie channels, and it seems like they'll be airing it a lot.. in fact it was jsut aired the other day.. so if you missed it, you'll probably be seeing it again soon..
