posticon Addie's Journey

Hello ,everyone . My name is Addie ,and I usually hang out in the Kdrama section .

I started this thread because I am going to Asia soon : Japan & South Korea to be exact . I thought it would be fun to keep a trip log here ,so I could share my experiences with all of you . I am taking my laptop , and
I hope to be able to post frequently so that my experiences are fresh . If I have a problem with communication ,then I will post later from my notes .

I will definitely post pictures - but that may wait until I return.

If someone had told me 2 years ago that I would be going to Korea ,I would have doubted it very much .
Yet here I am . It is a long and a short story at the same time . I had family that lived on the north shore of
Oahu in Hawaii ,and I got hooked (literally ) on Kolrean dramas on that trip .When I came back to Los Angeles , I went looking for the same show that I had been watching in HI . The rest is history .

I was supposed to visit a friend in Scotland this fall ,but when those plans fell apart , I decided now was the time to visit Japan & Korea .

I am going to spend 7 nights in Japan ,and 8 nights in Korea .The focus of the trip will be Ancient Treasures .....but we will also see a lot of "modern " sights too emoticon

I welcome your participation and posts .

More later emoticon

I am so jealous. I am sure you're going to have a lot of fun! When are you going? I remember it was sometime in October, right?

Re: Addie's Asian Journey

Actually ,I am leaving this Saturday - 9/23 .

I will going first to Tokyo on Korean Air . The flight is supposed to take 11 1/2 hours . I found out yesterday that Japan uses the same kind of electrical plugs that we do ....I thought that was interesting .

After a week in Japan ,I will go to Korea. I will fly from Osaka to Seoul . I am going to be on a tour ,but apparently there are only going to be 2 members - myself ,and somebody else . I couldn't believe it wasn't cancelled ..but then I remembered that it was a guaranteed departure .

I am sure I will have a lot to write about that segment of the trip ....but I guess I will have to assign a pseudonym to my trip mate ...LOL .

I will be taking trains alot on this trip .

I also found out that the flight from Seoul to LA takes 11 hours . FYI .

The next couple of days will be hectic in getting ready .I am working up til the end ( I'd rather have some extra days off on the other end ) but I will post something every day .

It sounds really exciting! I am very jealous. I want to someday go to Japan and Korea as well.

I'm very much looking forward to reading your log and seeing your trip pictures.

You will be back around October 9-ish? Just right in the thick of our All In viewing for the K-Drama club. emoticon

Is there a guide with your tour "group"? If so, this could prove to be advantageous for you and your "tour mate"!

We're all anxious to hear your reports and experiences. Be safe. emoticon

Re: Addie's Asian Journey

There is supposed to be a guide ,but since there are only 2 people ,I can't imagine that it will be a full time one . My travel agent said it would be "locally hosted " .

I am not sure of anything except this is turning out to be more of an adventure than I thought !

I'll bet we'll be in a van or something rather than a bus .....as far as the guide goes - I know there is one ,but will they change at each place ? We are taking trains a lot ,so - will they put us on at point A and meet us at point B?

Who knows ??? I'll have to let you know emoticon

It's ironic though ,because in Japan apparently there are 50 people and they had to make 2 groups ..

I will go from being herded to individual attention .HOW STRANGE .

This is the hardest part of the trip for me ...I have been fortunate ,and have travelled a lot ,but for some reason it just doesn't get easier for me . I procrastinate starting to pack ,although I know what I want to take .

All you pet owners will understand this ,but I had to take my dog to the kennel this afternoon . Ii didn't want to take her early ,but animals always know when something is up . It stresses them out ,and you can't pack in front of a dog .Maybe you have seen the sad face that a cocker spaniel can put on ,but it can be torture to have to look at it .

SInce I'm picking her up on the way home from the airport ,I'll have to pack her leash and collar .

I hope that's not a problem for airport security emoticon

addie:
As I don't know any japanese beyond the few phrases I've picked up on dramas, I found Japan really difficult to get around without help. So a large group will be terrific. However, I think you'll find that your level of Korean will be really helpful in Korea. As you'll be a small group, you may have more flexibility to go places you wouldn't normally be able to do on a regular tour. Sounds like to much fun!

I wanted to add this...
Here are a couple of Japanese good luck charms for your for your trip.

Omamori — An omamori is a charm that ensures the safety of its holder.

Kaeru Frog —In Japanese, the word kaeru means both frog and return, this little frog carries wishes for a safe return home.
