Are Stereotypes 85% accurate?

My wife hotly disputes this. She says show me the proof. But I am just quoting a socology professor who I once had.

Perhaps the statement "Steriotypes are 85% accurate to be true" is to broad. As I never actually read the study so I don't know the nature of the steriotypes that were studied.

I got in trouble on one forum for asking if Asia is a bigger threat to the American way of life then Iraq. The belief among many in the USA is that we need to work more hours to compete with the Asians. Or is this just an excuse for our own workaholism?

My professor's thesus was that steriotypes persist because they are more true then not. I am 50% German 50% steriotype BEER, 25% Romanian 12.5 percent French and 12.5 Canadian Indian.

A steriotype of Canidians is that they are peacefull. However my great great grand parents got run out for mixing. They were no longer accepted. Their field was burned down and a note said next time it will be you. They had kids so they came to the USA where they hid their German heritage due to WWWII. Their kids were not permitted to speak German.

And there were concentration camps at the time for Asian and Germans in the USA. The Germans could come and go as they pleased as long as they checked in from time to time but the Asians were perty much locked up.

Perhaps most of this should be in a intro thread but it is why I am concerned about raceism. I think if we learn more about our sterio types we will be less influenced by them in a negitive way.

So do you think steriotypes are more accurate or inacurate?

Stereotypes are 100% ridiculous. A stereotype was which brought along the Japanese/German and Jewish deathcamps in the US and Europe. Saying all Japanese were against America during WWII was a stereotype, for example, as most Japanese were actually commited to the US.
