With any luck this will calm down and Psy will end his forays into US with that silly song. It is really getting to be a little too much everywhere you go. He has a great following in Korea and can draw thousands in many open air concerts. If his YG agents are smart they will call him back to Korea as soon as possible. He is not really an idol and he is also not all that good as a Korean patriot. He made a mess of his first military time and was just about kicked out. Then later they called him up again to serve his two years, which he then did properly. Those in the entertainment field do not expect to be serving all their time actually in the regular army. They do what is called 'Civic duty' at an office where they do various tasks that do not include severe training. Some actually do want to serve and Hyun Bin for example, opted for the Marines and he served fully.
Korea has a passionate culture and you can't fau;lt them for that. They have endured thousands of years of war and occupation including during up to the Korean War. Memories are very bitter for many people in Korea.
Share a number of your views Peg.

It was a good summer anthem song, for what it is, within the Pop limitations (derivative, assembly line/highly manufactured industry vs more pure artistic creativity) and framework of K-Pop/Rap. It's hard to deny Gangnam Style's power though. Even in this forum where a number of members are more casual about listening to or following religiously newer pop stuff... suddenly unexpected members who I didn't think even listened or liked pop... suddenly were all buzz and excited about Gangnam Style, for something that wasn't a boy band or girl group and for an artist who wasn't about looks. Something very special about how he was able to become accessible to so many.

One point where I have a different opinion though, I hope this isn't the end of Psy's foray into the US. I say that as someone neutral about Psy... I don't really care about his music in general, the music is a passing distraction and something somewhat fun to occasionally listen to (before it got overplayed) to me at best. If he had quit two weeks ago before this situation, I wouldn't have personally cared much or at all one way or the other. But I think it would be a shame if this incident from his younger days would doom him for good and the good things of K-Pop, Korean Culture he opened up to the country. But I agree, Peg, the GS song sure wore out its welcome after the trillionth time, especially with it overused in a K-Drama over and over and over and over - a point I made point of in K-Drama threads when the songs were just dumped into a drama for ratings/buzz, but sometimes were poorly used.

Psy's always been a rebel (sometimes a rebel without a cause) type figure though, service issues mentioned above, drug issues and uncensored statements in the past which made him popular with the younger generation prior to Gangnam Style - so these events, given the atmosphere and backdrop of the country articulated by the Washington Post story didn't surprise me too much. It's ironic though, that over the summer, all the writers were writing about his antics of the past as what distanced some South Korea older and conservative generation from him, these same issues (his uncensored nature and sometimes indecent performances) and are what's coming back to bite him, but in a different way.

Right now, no one seems to know what will happen to Psy's future, at least stateside. Opinion is like everywhere about this topic, divided. Some think he is as good as done over here, while some don't - for example, Time Magazine's analyst doesn't believe this will stop Psy's stardom.

The news about this issue seems to be slowing down and the anger seems to be subsiding a bit, but it may heat up again next week when the radio and cable political pundits are back to work with their usual shenanigans.

Re: The Korean Wave & Domestic News

Per the previous page, South Korean Netizens have noticed the Korean press has been only presenting flattering K-Pop American opinions of Psy over there - to make it seem like this issue was a non-issue over here.

One of the articles over there has a headline along the lines that Psy's apology to keep the respect of both Korea and America. Except Americans with a large majority haven't been completely satisfied with Psy's wording/not commenting personally; while SK's netizens were happy for his word choice per the discussion on the previous page. It's kind of obvious to netizens that the SK media is up to the usual, showing the side they want to show.

Some comments that have been translated by several outlets:
____________________________

"The Korean media is reporting as if Americans accepted Psy's apology and that they think it wasn't anything to apologize over, but the reality of the situation can be seen in the replies on Yahoo news. Replies with over 2,000 votes are all asking why he's only apologizing now and how he's giving a heartless apology just to make more money in America. The sentiment on him is gravely negative, so why isn't our country's media reporting the truth? I'm not trying to defend America, I'm just saying don't distort the truth."

"What's funny to me is people are forgetting what happened to Jay Park and how he was completely ousted from the media. How angry were we? Although the misunderstandings have been cleared now, it's easy to understand America's point of view when we put ourselves in their shoes through the Jay Park scandal"

It sounds like the majority of comments by the netizens reflect frustration with the Korean media for not reporting the truth, rather than containing criticism of Americans because of our anger over Psy's comments.

Re: The Korean Wave & Domestic News

Based on the surfacing reports, it looks like there wasn't any news of note prior to the event, the Christmas at Washington show went on as planned.

Looks like Psy talked to the press prior to the event or backstage, he has a new personal statement tonight, below.

Obama focused on the event as a whole and had nothing to say on this issue, per the LA Times report at the bottom.

News Excerpt: Washington Post Full Story

(Psy on the right)

A penitent Psy brings ‘Gangnam Style’ to Washington

He made it. Fresh off the tarmac from Minneapolis. Or was it Miami? They blur together. Definitely someplace where “Gangnam Style” is every bit as inescapable as it is everywhere else.

Psy, the 34-year-old global pop tsunami from South Korea, is here to sing at “Christmas in Washington,” Sunday’s annual televised charity concert at the National Building Museum. The first family has attended the gig for the past 30 Decembers. The president sits front and center. This requires the artists to carol with their hearts thrumming in their throats.

Psy’s heart might pound a little faster. He’s performing for President Obama just 50-odd hours after news spread across the Internet that he sang graphic, anti-American lyrics at a 2004 protest concert.

But backstage, Psy seems supremely calm. In warm, measured tones, he describes his first visit to Washington as “an honor.” He deeply regrets those words he sang all those years ago. And if this weekend’s media spasm ends up crashing his stateside stardom even faster than it was built? “I deserve it,” he says.

But first, he will perform a surreal act of contrition: He will dance across a poinsettia-dotted stage as if racing a phantom thoroughbred in the Kentucky Derby.

....

“There was huge sorrow all over the country,” Psy says of that time, when outrage over the U.S. military presence in South Korea was hot and widespread. “Explain and express about the sorrow . . . I thought that’s kind of part of my job . . . But the specific words that I used, it was too much.”

He has more perspective today. He’s since become a husband, a father of twin girls, and has even served in the South Korean military. “After that eight, nine years, I have been changed a lot.”

With fresh controversy bubbling beneath his feet, he says he’s more concerned with forgiveness than his American pop future.

“If it’s gonna hurt my career or not, that’s not important,” Psy says. “The most important thing is that as a human being, I really, fully regret the using of [those] kinds of words.”

Seats, everyone. Various invited wonk folk. Veep Biden. The Obamas. They laugh at host Conan O’Brien’s zingers and clap politely after carols from soul great Diana Ross, pop singer Demi Lovato and “American Idol” winner Scotty McCreery.

Psy strides out toward the end of the program, sporting a red sequined sweater, crooning about chestnuts and Jack Frost’s nose-nipping.

This is a wink-wink fake-out, of course. The speakers promptly erupt with the squiggly bass frequencies everyone wants to hear. Psy dutifully hops on his invisible steed and trots to a tweaked refrain: “Oppan Christmas style!”

It’s a huge room, and every nook of it fills with giddy, gushy, holly, jolly applause. Psy throws a thumbs-up and silently mouths a “Thank you.”

“Christmas in Washington” airs on TNT on Dec. 21 at 8 p.m.

Story on Obama at the Concert via LA Times

At the end of the performance, Obama made a brief speech to the crowd about the holiday season and the charity. He did not mention Psy.

Obama called the concert "the chance to share with some very brave people ... and it gives them hope, not just through the holiday but all year round."

Re: Korean artists

The thing that interests me so much at this moment is will all this brouhaha over Gangnam Style open the door for more Korean artists to enter the American entertainment field. It has not worked so far. There is a wonderful film which opened this past week in LA with Lee Byung Hun in the lead in a dual role. It is a huge success in Korea and also was warmly received here. It is, in other words. a highly successful film.(Masquerade) I bet very few Americans will hear of it or go to see it. It will have an audience of people like us maybe, who will watch it on Internet or buy the DVD. Lee has made three films here in US and he has placed his prints in the cement in Grauman's Theatre court. Who knows about that I wonder. I did not know and I like this actor and usually read about him at times. US entertainment area is a very tough nut for Koreans to crack. Show business is hard. My favourite hip hop group has given three or four concerts in US during their recent world tour but I doubt they raised many waves except for the people who are fans. They gained the top award recently in the MNET MAMA Awards in Hong Kong but who even watched that show. Hours long and every talented Asian star in the business. Much bigger than the Oscars and a better entertainment to my mind. Psy was there naturally. Even Adam Lambert, and he was brilliant. My group..BIG BANG.. were fine and still they won't make too many waves in the US despite all the fuss about Psy. Strange.

Re: The Korean Wave & Domestic News

Interestingly enough, I asked a friend of mine (from here) who is studying abroad in Korea about the whole PSY issue. He said he heard about it briefly on the internet, but it wasn't being discussed much at his university. Some students hadn't even heard about what happened until he told them.

Re: The Korean Wave & Domestic News

Interesting to hear that Hiroshi66. Sounds like what I mentioned the previous day where from what I was seeing from the Korean news sites and hearing from my acquaintances, that it wasn't being covered much, not much netizen interest or netizen trends in the story over there. Of course it didn't help that the initial reports, the SK news sites were making it sound like not a big deal with them only printing mostly apology, and only the positive K-Pop fan reactions. emoticon

Even on the biggest English K-Drama site, not much activity there... usually posts there can go into the thousands, but in this story almost nothing.

I wonder if that is the case in America at large? I mean we're seeing it on every news site, but I haven't seen it much on the news on TV. Saw it covered on CNN's weekend show yesterday but that was after leaving the TV on for hours where I finally ran into it. Casual people who don't really follow the news much or read online daily probably might not be aware of the chaos that happened.

In my view, this story is now starting to blow over. I am getting a sense that the story is now on its end cycle and my general impression is people have vented their anger and are now starting to move on. Hopefully the issue is now almost over, but that will depend what kind of monkey business the extreme radio/political pundits make of it on their popular shows this week.

Speaking of which, CNN's story on it today, with a new image of Psy and Obama shaking hands from last night's event.

This will probably be the last Psy story I'll post for a while, unless there's news of his official interview or something major.

Did Obama go 'Gangnam?'

(CNN) - Anyone hoping to see President Barack Obama launch into this year's dance fad will have to keep waiting.

When the commander-in-chief met Korean pop star PSY at Sunday's "Christmas in Washington" charity concert, the pair exchanged a handshake and a greeting – but not a boogie.

.... (Click link for full story, edited out the summary of old info).

In short remarks at the end of the concert, Obama mentioned Ross, as well as the event's host Conan O'Brien, but did not refer to PSY by name. He said the concert was a "chance to get in the Christmas spirit; to spread some joy and sing along with artists who have much better voices than we do."

Re: The Korean Wave & Domestic News

Time Magazine's Asian Edition Cover for the week is the conservative candidate for this upcoming election, Park Geun-Hye, daughter of the Presidential dictator who ran the country from the early 60s to the late 70s. Those who watched Lights and Shadows this year will be familiar with this era where the politics of the time frame under her father, Park Chung Hee's leadership, was covered extensively (though somewhat fictionalized), but rather un-flatteringly. Time named him as one of the top 10 Asians of the Century.

I can see why Park Geun-Hye is such an interesting figure. Not only is she the daughter of Park Chung Hee, but, if elected, she would be the ROK's first female president. Fascinating times, indeed. Looking forward to seeing what happens!

Re: The Korean Wave & Domestic News

Right now she is within the margin of error to around 5% ahead in polls, so she has the advantage. Tonight in SK is the second debate, so there will probably be news coming out in a few hours/tonight/tomorrow morning from the English news sites.

Speaking of press shenanigans, the Korean netizens have been fired up and frustrated with the media over there and Park Geun Hye Rally doctored to look more like she has more supporters - they also picked up the Time's use of strongman, whereas in their full article it used "Dictator's" - netizens are poking fun at Time's softening of the cover language.

__________________________________

News story via KoreaBang: Park Geun Hye Rally Photo Doctored

Image

Park Geun-hye’s campaign team are once again the most-talked about thing on the internet as a doctored photo of a Saenuri Party rally that inflated crowd numbers was circulated in South Korean online communities, causing controversy and attracting thousands of comments from netizens.

On Saturday afternoon, Park presented herself to vast crowds in Gwanghwamun, for a major rally 9 days before Koreans take to the polls. However, scandal erupted on Sunday morning as it emerged a photo originally published by news company News1 was doctored by someone to show artificially enchanced numbers in the attending crowds (see above).

Last month, Park’s campagin team threatened a satirist with legal action for painting a pitcure of her giving birth to her father and, just yesterday, TIME magazine was forced to change the headline of a Park Geun-hye cover story to ‘Dictator’s Daughter’, after the Saenuri Party claimed the use of the word ‘strongman’ meant ‘strong leader’.

Many have atrributed the doctoring of the photo to the Saenuri Party itself, and the news will come as a blow to Park and her campaign as it tries hard to shake off her ‘Daughter of a Dictator’ image.

It is not clear if Park’s campaign team were directly behind the doctored photo, or if the netizen who uploaded the image was acting alone. Nevertheless, netizens have found both outrage and humour in the incident, likening it to the practises of a dictatorship not so far away:

.....

Via a Korean News story translated:

From NoCutNews:
Controversy Over Doctored Photo of Park Geun-hye’s Gwanghwamun Rally

Press photo randomly doctored to increase the crowds

While Saenuri Party candidate Park Geun-hye and Democratic United Party candidate Moon Jae-in came together on the 8th in Gwanghwamun Square for a large-scale ‘Joint Campaign Event in Seoul’ in order to garner popularity, manipulated photos of the gathered crowd quickly spread online community, attracting concern.

One photo showing candidate Park Geun Hye’s campaign event at 2pm in Gwanghwamun Square yesterday caused much controversy within the online community after an anonymous netizen enlarged the size of the crowd.

In the original photo, while there are chiefly crowds gathered only to the south of the statue of King Sejong the Great, as well as around the left-side steps of the Sejong Centre for the Performing Arts, in the doctored photos, it looks as if there is a crimson crowd [supporters of Park wear red] in all directions around the statue of Sejong, filling Gwanghwamun square, and crowds surrounding the entire Sejong Centre for the Performing Arts.

In particular, due poor photoshopping, part of the statue’s shoulder is missing and there is a difference with the number of cars passing from Gwanghwamun in the direction of City hall.

With regards to the scandal, News1 made an announcement via ‘News1’s position on the fabricated Gwanghwamun campaign picture,’ saying, ‘We have not disclosed any photoshopped pictures,’ and ‘We will track down the details and dissemination routes, and hold the culprits responsible.’

The news sparked a big reaction from netizens after an image comparing the original picture and the composite one was uploaded to an online community.

Some Netizens criticized the making of composite pictures of a certain candidate’s campaigning, saying, “It’s really anachronistic,” “It’s not that surprising. I assumed they faked it or paid someone to do it. The problem is those people accepting news without doubting it,” “It’s somewhat childish so I can’t help cringing.”

Since the news photo is copyrighted by the newspaper however, the culprits could potentially be punished for using it without the consent of the newspaper under the Copyright Law and the Public Official Election Act
