It's separated from major cities of Taiwan by the central mountain range.) He started writing and publishing at age 12. He graduated from the Engineering Department of Ta-Tung Technical College. He left Taiwan and settled in Vancouver, Canada. He is an active participant in the Taiwan democratic movement. Because of his involvement in the Taiwan democratic movement, he was black-listed by the government and was unable to return to Taiwan for 20 years. He runs a automated manufacturing system company. He has published many short stories in various Taiwan newspapers. Sunshine of the Back of the Mountain was his first novel. ---------------- 後山日先照's literal translation is "The Sun Shines on the Back Mountain First".. Back Mountain is another term for the east coast of Taiwan. When one says they are from the Back Mountain, they mean they are from the east coast of Taiwan, cities such as Hua Lien and Yee-Lan. Since these cities are on the east coast, it's natural that the sun rises and shines on them first. The director and producer of this drama, Lee Yueh-Feng, lost his parents to the 228 incidence. The 228 incidence was Chiang Kai Shek's way of squashing Taiwanese uprising against his government when the KMTs first arrived in Taiwan. --------------------- The story of this drama centered around Chou Yu-Mo, the matriarch of the Chen family. 周雨綢一生經歷,正可為二二八再開一扇窗 Chou Yu-Mo's life story is a reflection of the 228 Incidence. Chou Yu-Mo, the grandmother in the story, is the constant thread that weaved throughout the story. She came to Taiwan with her father at the end of the Manchurian era. Her father was an official from the court. Her birthplace was Harpin, northeastern China. So she can speak Mandarin. Because her father fought against the Japanese occupation (and died subsequently), she grew up with an aborigine family that her father had entrusted her to. That's why she has a brother who is an aboriginese. Later, she married a Taiwanese doctor named Chen Bei-Ying, who runs a drug store. They had 4 sons together. Due to the Japanese involvement in WWII, their 2nd and 3rd son were taken to fight for the Japanese in southeast Asia. Only the 2nd son survived the war. The 3rd son left a son behind. The grandson's name is "Geng-Tu", a 3rd generation main character. nondisclosed_email@example.com (merela)Fri, 26 Aug 2005 10:24:11 +0000 Re: TW-Drama: 後山日先照 SUNSHINE OF THE BACK OF THE MOUNTAINhttps://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p1393160,from=rss#post1393160https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p1393160,from=rss#post1393160I'm not sure how many episodes this show has. I can't find it on its official website. I finally saw the first 4 episodes I taped. I didn't think it would be good because I was expecting "propaganda"-like stories, but it was nothing like that. I actually liked it. It's complicated trying to depict the good and bad from each group of people (the mainlanders, the aboriginal Taiwanese, the local Taiwanese, and the Japanese). It combined lots of known historical events as well as fictional events. I was actually touched by the sadness and the pain felt by the main characters. The story centered around the Chen family. Anyone with ancestral homes in Taiwan can easily envision (or adopt) the Chen family as their own. That's how the Taiwanese people lived 60 years ago. It's too bad that this show does not have subtitles because this story should be made known to the international community and even the mainland Chinese people. It's important for others to see from this show that Taiwan and its people are so different from China from historical, cultural, and societal perspectives--that the China/Taiwan situation is unlikely to resolve itself this century without force. Taiwan has been under different rules since the 1600. First by the Dutch, then by the Japanese, and then by the mainland Chinese. The Japanese did a lot for Taiwan in terms of creating its infrastructure such as railway, ports, school and government systems. It's only been 10 years since the Taiwan government is run by people who were born and raised in Taiwan. I will be happy to provide summaries of each episode if anyone is interested in watching this show.nondisclosed_email@example.com (merela)Fri, 26 Aug 2005 09:33:32 +0000 https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p1393159,from=rss#post1393159https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p1393159,from=rss#post1393159how many episodes does this series have? is it good?nondisclosed_email@example.com (LittoShortyMe)Mon, 22 Aug 2005 12:25:29 +0000 TW-Drama: 後山日先照 SUNSHINE OF THE BACK OF THE MOUNTAINhttps://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p1393158,from=rss#post1393158https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p1393158,from=rss#post1393158KSCI/LA18 translated 後山日先照 into SUNSHINE OF THE BACK OF THE MOUNTAIN, but in Taiwanese, 後山日先照 means "the sun shines on the back of the mountain first". I'm not 100% sure, but 後山(back mountain) is a colloquial term for mainland China. I'll need to double check this and get back to you. This is a production by Taiwan's Public Television. Official site: http://www.pts.org.tw/~web01/sunshine/ I believe the story begins after the end of World War II. So it will likely cover Japanese occupation, Japanese withdrawal, KMT occupation, and the proliferation of power by the mainlanders in Taiwan. The big banner on the main page says: "LOVE, is the final destination/home of different ethnicities. It's a story about the island of Taiwan and its conflicts and resolution between its people of various origins." A little background on the current "division" in Taiwan--between the Taiwanese (Hokien and Hakka) and the mainlander descendants (who are mostly born in Taiwan--hence they are also Taiwanese by birth). When Chiang Kai Shek and his KMT official and army/navy/airforce personnel came over to Taiwan after they lost the civil war to the communists, CKS established its parlimentary system in Taiwan. It had parliament member representation from each province (in China). Everyone's ID card has to indicate their origin, meaning the birth province of their father. Hence the mainlanders won't diminish in numbers as they age because their offsprings who were born in Taiwan will still consider one of the provinces in China as their birth origins. This mainlander/Taiwanese identity didn't really matter until true democracy took over after the pro-Taiwan independence movements took foot hold in the democratic elections in Taiwan. It's a true political split between those who are identified as "mainlanders" and those who are identified as "Taiwanese". Most mainlanders voted for KMTs or the New Party (a split party from KMT). Those that were identified as Taiwanese voted for the DPP. The irony is that both the mainlander and the Taiwanese belong to the same ethnicity--Chinese. We are all ethnic Chinese! It is a complicated situation, uniquely Taiwan, and it's not something I can explain in the context of this show. I guess this show will use LOVE as the context to which this issue is discussed.nondisclosed_email@example.com (merela)Tue, 16 Aug 2005 19:32:25 +0000
