Las and fearful alack, even though the instructions say it is for both Mozilla and Firefox, I cannot get it to appear on my Mozilla 1.7.2.

If you are talking about the Smiley Xtra extension, that one is for Firefox only, unfortunately.

If I download Firefox, will all my Mozilla email files, etc., be automatically carried over (for lack of a better term) to Firefox?

Mozilla Firefox is a browser only. Mozilla Thunderbird is a mail and newsreader only. The Mozilla Suite (what you have) is an all-in-one app including browser, mail/news, IRC client, and HTML editor.

After Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird reached version 1.0, the Mozilla Foundation has been trying to transition people over from the all-in-one suite into using Firefox and Thunderbird instead. It used to be that Firefox/Thunderbird were the cutting-edge products, and the Mozilla suite was the nice, stable product. Now the situation is reversed with experimental code continuing to go into the Mozilla Suite while Firefox recently has only been getting bug fixes and security features.

If you install Thunderbird, will all your Mozilla emails still be OK? Probably, but I'm not sure.

I do not have the Mozilla Suite. I have only the Mozilla mail client. But, since I cannot risk messing up my computer, and due to my inability to get myself OUT of a messy situation, I'd better stop right here for the time being. emoticon

If you have a program from Mozilla that only handles mail (doesn't also browse the web), then that would be Thunderbird. It should say “Mozilla Thunderbird” in the title bar and in the Help menu.

Well, I do browse with Mozilla, I guess, because I use IE only when necessary. (Don't you just love trying to explain things to people who don't know what they're talking about. emoticon So sorry.)

OK, rather than take up space here on the board, I am going to send you via email screen caps (yes, I actually learned how to do it) of the "title bar", the "Help" menu selections, and what shows up when I click on "Mozilla" from the "Help" drop down menu.

Smiley Xtra

After installing, click on the smiley picture to open the smiley sidebar. Double-click on a smiley in the sidebar to insert it into your post.

Smiley Xtra has changed hosting providers. Get their updated extension (version 3.1.3, 745 smileys) from the new Smiley Xtra site.

There's also a contact page there to send feature requests for version 4, under development. (For example, one could request support for Mozilla since the extension is currently Firefox-only.)

(And one could be denied.) Mozilla will not be supported.

Argh. Did the developer give a reason why?

I received a very kind and helpful reply, in which he stated:classblockquote
Unfortunately I will not be providing a Mozilla version of Smiley Xtra. It would require quite a bit of fiddling, and since there will be no more future releases of Mozilla Suite, it wouldn't really be worth the time from my point of view.
So, looks as though I won't be enjoying the Smiley Xtras for a while, as my computer guru feels I'm safer with Mozilla than Firefox, at the moment. I don't have the knowledge to get myself out of serious trouble and do not have help readily available, so he sets me up in as conservative and fail-safe a manner as is conceivable. Until Mozilla becomes problematic for me, I most likely will not be moving into Firefox. (Being the turtle rather than the hare may not be exciting, but it gets me where I want to go.)
