Re: TiVo
Ever hear of a TiVo that just stopped clicking? It worked pretty flawlessly yesterday. False alarm, or will I have to replace a drive anyway?

Sure sounds like you would need to soon. Have any idea which hd it is? What size hd's you have in your tivo. I have been hearing more and more lately about hard drive failures in people's tivo's.
One reason why I stayed away from them even though I also have heard of some hard drive failures in dvd recorders. I just don't like the monthly fee or life time subscription you have to pay for their service. Plus I have heard if you paid for a life time subscription and your tivo breaks. If you get a new one you can not transfer the lifetime subscription over to the new one. If that is true that is a huge rip off.
For me I will just stick with my hd base dvd recorder. Of course it does not have a sophisticated Tivo interface to record shows. But the one in my dvd recorder does just fine my me. I record mostly Korean, japanese or local programs I want to put on dvd-r.

TiVo uses the same standard IDE hard drives used in most computers. Like computer hard drives, after enough years, they do need to be replaced. 引用 (quote): I just don't like the monthly fee or life time subscription you have to pay for their service. If the TiVo is officially repaired (or officially exchanged for another of the same model), then the (product) lifetime subscription is transferred. If you just buy a newer model TiVo and put the old model in the garage or sell it, then, no, lifetime cannot be transferred. Lifetime costs less than subscribing monthly for two years and so was never meant to be something that applied for a human lifetime, which is >> 2 years.
Finally, note that if you do buy a new model and sell the old one, used TiVo DVRs with lifetime currently sell for ~80% of their original price on eBay. So, most of the money spent on lifetime can be recouped.

Re: TiVo
ccwf - did you hear about the Google news item saying only people in CA will be able to use it, or it can only be used within CA? I have Earthlink powered by Google, does this mean it is time to switch? News info was very vague. Hope you can help.
Sorry about putting this under TiVo but I would value your opinion since I am beginning not to trust Earthlink anymore.

No, I haven't heard of any such thing. Perhaps you are referring to California legislative limits upon Google's Gmail service?

Re: TiVo
Price question re TiVo: The new Arch. Digest had several pgs of TiVo ad re a special $100 discount if purchased thru Best Buy or Circuit City. It is a 'rebate' discount but amounted to about $99 actual purchase price, less the monthly TiVo subscription costs which they indicated to be $29+ (or something to that effect). Is this a good deal?

See TiVo's $100 rebate info. As you can see, the rebate is not limited to Best Buy and Circuit City.
Best Buy has three current deals, I believe:
• $199 in-store with $100 rebate for new silver model TiVo Series2 40hr/40GB (you can also get this deal on-line from TiVo directly)
• $190 on-line with $100 rebate for new silver model TiVo Series2 40hr/40GB
• $149 in-store with $100 rebate for older black model TiVo Series2 40hr/40GB
Subscription for these standalone TiVo models is $12.95/mo for the first unit, $6.95/mo for additional units, or $299 for the lifetime of the unit.
If you have DirecTV, however, you should also consider the integrated DirecTV DVR with TiVo receivers. These typically cost $99 (sometimes less with deals), have two tuners and better video quality, and have a subscription price of $5/mo for up to eight units (that is, if you have eight of these DirecTiVo units, you still pay only a total of $5/mo), but lack some of the newer features. There's also a DirecTV w/ TiVo and HD model (but it's not cheap).
I think the $149 with $100 rebate is a great deal. Many others think the same, so many Best Buys are sold out of their older TiVo models. The $199 with $100 rebate for the newer unit is still a pretty good deal.
There are many, many TiVo models with various features and disk sizes. But if you're curious abuot TiVo, I'd recommend getting one of these basic models from Best Buy and trying it out. If you don't like it or have any problems with a particular unit, you can return it or exchange it within thirty days. (The same applies even if bought on-line, but returns and exchanges are easier with a physical store.)

Re: TiVo
Also, be aware that the rebate does not apply to demo or display units. So, if Best Buy offers you a small discount for a demo/display unit, beware.

Re: TiVo
Well this is the weirdest thing...
Since Saturday my TiVo's been acting up (clicking), but tonight it worked flawlessly, just in time to tape Smallville worry-free. I don't know if I should get the new HD after all. Maybe it's just a cycle thing? Should I just save the programs that I know were effected by this (so it won't have to deal with the... bad... block?) or can I safely rewatch those same programs? I tried to finish watching this week's Trick episode but it ended up resetting the TiVo.
For the curious I can provide movies over AIM of said "acting up", as well as comparing the glorious TiVo picture quality to "Dark Age"-ish videocassette quality. Blech.
