posticon Easily Use Chinese on Computers by Handwriting: NJStar Chinese Pen

Board regulars know that I help out at this board just for fun and really try to avoid plugging my company (Web i18n) very much. However, since I think it can help users of this board so much, I've got to sing the praises of a product we offer: NJStar Chinese Pen. (We're an authorized NJStar reseller.)

As you all know, typing Chinese xml:lang zh-TW 漢字 (hanzi) into a computer is challenging for many. The same goes for typing Japanese xml:lang ja-JP 漢字 (kanji) and Korean xml:lang ko-KR 漢字 (hanja), although Chinese is particularly difficult.

class float-left ImageBut this product makes it very, very easy. Try the free, thirty day NJStar Chinese Pen demo. Once installed, you'll see a little row of three buttons. The left button, shown pressed in the image, toggles the handwriting recognition mode. When in this mode, simply use your mouse to hand-write a character on your screen. NJStar Chinese Pen will then guess the character and insert it into the currently active text input area of the active app. (Could be the reply area of this board. Could be Microsoft Word. Could be in an email you are composing.) That's it! This software is ridiculously easy to use compared to most other approaches to writing Chinese on a computer.

If you like it, you can get 10% off if you order using our NJStar on-line order form link at the bottom of the Web i18n products page.

Since it doesn't recognize non-Chinese 漢字, this product is not sold as being useful for Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. Nevertheless, it shouldn't work too badly if used for writing 漢字 in those other languages. That's because Japanese only has a handful of xml:lang ja-JP 国字 (kokuji, characters that don't occur in Chinese), and I believe creidesca indicated the same is true for Vietnamese. I'm not sure how many xml:lang ko-KR 國字 (gugja, characters that don't occur in Chinese) Korean has, but I've read they only tend to occur in place names.

Re: Writing in Chinese: NJStar Chinese Pen, Advanced Use

classfloat-leftImageWe've discussed the main button, shown pressed, which toggles on the handwriting recognition mode.

The ridges on the left let you drag the buttons around the screen.

The central button reads out any selected characters. Just select some Chinese text and press that button to hear it read back to you.

The right button pops up a menu that lets you set a few options. For example, if you activate “Multiple choices”, then the program will show you a bunch of possible matches after you write a character instead of just making a best guess. Click the desired character in the row of possible matches to enter it.

If you have any other questions about using the product, feel free to ask! NJStar also has some NJStar Chinese Pen instructions. (Again, to get a discount, use the order form linked to at the bottom of the Web i18n products page.)

The trial is free, so I encourage those interested in writing xml:langzh-TW漢字 to try it out! This is really an easy program to use and is a tremendous boon to those good at writing characters (and not good with pinyin, or not good at and having a special zhuyinfuhao keyboard).
