AIM® (AOL® Instant Messenger™)
To be able to send instant messages to other forum members, you first need an AIM account.
Then, go “Change miscellanous [sic] settings” in your Runboard control panel to let other forum members know your AIM screen name so that we can contact you, and look for “AIM” at the bottom of posts or in other users' public information center pages to see who you can chat with. (Currently, about a dozen forum members have AIM accounts.)
Finally, you'll need an AIM client. There are many possibilities:
• On Macs, you can use iChat and Fire.
• On Windows, you can use Trillian.
• On Unix/Linux and Windows, you can use gaim.
• The recent versions of Netscape have an AIM client built-in.
• On Windows and Linux, you can use the official AIM client.
• There are many other clients, too (Everybuddy, Gabber, Kinkatta, Quickbuddy, naim, centericq, …).

Other instant messaging formats also exist (for example, I have staff members who use ICQ), but AIM is the most popular in this forum.
Also, doing some experimenting, it looks like Netscape's built-in client cannot display custom status messages unless someone is away and is limited to ASCII transmissions. iChat and gaim can both display custom status messages even when users are available and can handle Japanese or other non-ASCII text.

Re: AIM® (AOL® Instant Messenger™)
In case you don't use IE or Mozilla (I sometimes use Netfront on my PS2) you can still use the AIM remote in the public information center. Move your cursor over the Add Buddy List button to read their screen name off the status bar. You can add them to your buddy list at your leisure.
Now to get GAIM working in the PS2's Linux...

Buddy Lists
classfloat-rightWhat's a buddy list?
A buddy list lets you quickly see who's available to chat and makes it easier to start conversations with them.
In some clients (but not all), the buddy list also shows info users choose to make available (like, for me, the song currently playing on my laptop and the fact that you can audioconference with me if you have appropriate software). In other clients, you'll need to look at each user's info to see this information.
For example, to the right is a partial screenshot from my buddy list of C/J/K Drama forum members (here using iChat).
