Re: K-drama: 해신 (Emperor of the Sea)

Excellent Cinematography. This appears to be a very compelling drama; even though many scenes make me cringe (like horrible beatings, Fencing and battle fights) I find myself turning those off and then few mins later, ret'g.

Question: is the young actor Sharpshooter (currently learning to Fence) actually supposed to be Song Il-gook as a youth? The young actor is quite impressive. Also, is it same situation w/girls? If so, why aren't names of these actors given as playing 'younger' so and so? This was a little confusing since they started out w/major battle which appears to be here/now, then revert back to what appears earlier times -- pls be patient w/me -- I have never watched historical drama before.

The young actor's features certainly resemble those of Song Il-guk, don't they? But from the official website, my guess is that the young sharpshooter is the Choi Soo-jong character, "Jang Bo-go."classblockquote"Jang Bo-go lost both parents when he was young. He was born as a slave. Thanks to his father who worked as a carpenter slave of the police office, he knows very well about the sea and has the knack of building ships. Faced with challenges, he becomes calmer and bolder. Such character has helped him to rise from gladiator to a security guard, military head of Muryong-gun and then ambassador of Cheong-Hae-Jin."Song Il-guk plays:classblockquote"Yeomjang. When young, he was raised by pirates. He lives a rough life. Yeomjang is capable of using short knives in a remarkable skill. He is a charismatic figure. But he has one-side love toward ...[the rest is a spoiler].Don't feel bad about about being confused on these historical dramas--a lot of us are, especially at the very beginning. There are so many characters involved and one of the biggest problems I've experienced is that the names on the official website and those used in the English subtitles are frequently spelled very differently--or are different names in their youth, etc., that you wouldn't have a clue about, if you're not familiar with Korean history (which I am not).

As an example, look at the names so far. I haven't seen "Jang Bo-go" or "Yeomjang" anywhere. Instead, we have Goong-bok, who seems to grow up to be Jang Bo-go. Or is he Yeomjang..... [Oh, this gives me a headache. Time for some mango mochi. emoticon]

nchristi Thank you. The reason I thought sharpshooter boy was playing child part of Song Il-gook was due to Song Il-gook's remarkable expertise w/arrow he shot smack-center into leader of warrior pack, then they bring in sharpshooter boy who places arrow w/same shot as he shoots down falcon. So. . . . . I thought it was Song Il-gook as young boy. Then, you note, that Song Il-gook's character was raised by pirates and sharpshooter is being raised by pirates. Hope I can stay w/this one because it's all good, and Song Il-gook is so exciting!

From looking at how Song Il Kuk's character handled that spear in the opening sequences of ep 01, I would have thought his skill would be towards the "little daggers" (unless they cut a scene out? I've been busy for the past 2 days, I hadnt' had a chance to go watch these 1st 2 epis yet)

Re: K-drama: 해신 (Emperor of the Sea)

Oh, wow. After last night‛s editing of the ending sequences, does anybody know what‛s what? (And I thought I was confused before!) I have no confidence in what I‛m about to write, but this is how I interpreted and sorted out who‛s who from last night‛s confused editing mess. (Any clarifications will be greatly appreciated.)

Goong-bok (grows up to be Jang Bo-jo, adult played by Choi Soo-jong)classulclasslison of the shipbuilder slave (star1's "sharpshooter" who killed the hawk belonging to the city magistrate‛s son)classli Flashbacks to pirates raiding his village and abducting his mother when he was a childclassli Learns fencing from Young Ninja (in woods) to defend himself against the city magistrate‛s son (whose sister in yellow defends Goong-bok)classli Goes to island on afternoon excursion with Yellow Sister [Jang-hwa?, played as adult by Soo-ae], who informs us she, too, has no motherclassli Is captured (with Yellow Sister & family) in pirate raidclassli [Cut to adulthood] Implores adult Yellow Sister in garden not to obey Madam Jami (played by Chae Si-ra) to move to "the lord," that he himself will take care of herclassli Grows up to be Jang Bo-jo [leads Mu-ryoung army of Seo-ju (representing King of Dang) against rebel lord of Pyoung-ro (Song Il-guk)]Nameless (so far) young Ninja (becomes Yeom-jang, adult played by Song Il-guk)classulclassli Raised by the head pirateclassli Gave "fencing" demo in the village and wow‛d Goong-bok by his abilityclassli Teaches Goong-bok to fence (secretly in woods) in exchange for showing Ninja around the islandclassli[Cut to adulthood] Peers around curtain as woman (is it adult Yellow Sister?) finds the lord (her husband?) assassinated at the tableclassli Grows up to be Yeom-jang, Rebel Lord of Pyoung-ro.It would seem that a whole bunch of really critical scenes and background information were edited out from last night‛s ending. If I read the website correctly, there are 50 episodes, each is 70 minutes long. What we‛re seeing is roughly 45-minutes--and that‛s counting the commercials. I‛d say we‛re probably seeing about half the show. (I think I didn‛t want to know that! emoticon)classcenterImageclassfloat-rightImagePirate and "Son"

you can see my preference for d/ling the high quality raws (and they're in HDTV too!), I'll get back to this after I have a chance of watching the subbed & raw versions of the epis hopefully later today/tomorrow.

nchristi so kind of you to post all the info from last night's ep. I am such an airhead when it comes to this drama, I think I will have to just surf back/forth enjoying beautiful scenery/costumes, and, especially the great-looking cast.

Chief While I love the idea of having those d'ld's avail., unfortunately, at this point in my life, time does not permit. I will keep it at back of my mind. As always, info truly appreciated.

Re: K-drama: 海神/해신 (Emperor of the Sea)

nchristi thank you for the summary. I'm really enjoying this drama even though the have cut out about half of each episode and i have no idea what is going on. Young ninja looks nothing like it did when he was younger, What happened to the bushy eyebrows. that was the only way i could recognize him. Hopefully one day KBS will show these dramas unedited.

Yes, I agree with you. The youth actors seem to bear no resemblance at all to the adult actors. On the other hand, if you watch Immortal Yi Sun-Shin, the child actors were amazing close look-alikes (one so close I wondered if he were the adult actor's son).

Isn't the "young Ninja" (becomes Yeom-jang) adult actor the one who got in trouble with the Korean draft and was replaced by Song Il-guk? Maybe the youth actor more closely resembled the original adult actor, but not Song Il-guk?

I found it completely confusing, though, because it seemed that you couldn't get sets of actors more opposite looking. I found myself ultimately sorting things out by the clothes they wore (one always wore brown, the other black, it seemed).

i found it easier to look at their hair since the archer guy had waivy hair and the other guy had straight hair. The ninja dude i had no clue about till he started to have flashbacks.

how did you get just attach my message to your message i can't figure that out yet.
