Re: J-Drama: 相棒 14 (Partners 14)

I think Kaburagi was actually talking with Mr. Vice-Minister of Justice at that time. They seem to have quite a close relationship and sense of camaraderie, similar to how Kaito did with Mr. Pill Eater.

He was originally speaking to the vice minister of justice in Japanese when he switched to English where he greeted her and told her to wait a min/sec. I'm guessing that's what made her so angry--she wa already waiting for him then to be told to wait a bit longer cuz he was on the phone.

Hiroshi, did you hear all of Kaburagi's conversation in Japanese? I found that to be a strange scene, unless he said something really vile to her. I find it hard to believe that she would slap Kaburagi so violently for just telling her to wait a minute. But then I am frequently surprised at how women in J- and K-drama can be so presumptuous and arrogant in their relationships with others.

Nchristi, I thought that scene was bizarre, too - especially since it cut off when it did! I did hear all of Kaburagi's conversation both in Japanese and also when he switched to English, and it pretty much matched with the e-subs. Kaburagi's tone there was a bit condescending (as if he was talking down to the woman, or playing her for a fool) as he told her (first in Japanese, and then in English) to wait a moment as he finished his phone call. I don't think the woman speaks much Japanese, so she probably wouldn't know who Kaburagi was talking to, or what they were discussing. If she knew he was talking to the Vice-Minister of Justice, I would hope she wouldn't have reacted that way. LOL!

I also thought that was a super weird scene. Maybe they were trying to depict that he's bad with women? Or maybe it's a stereotype in Japan that Caucasian women are arrogant and they were just using that for humor? I don't know.

Also, I missed the LA18 airdate, but managed to catch the first part somewhere else. Can someone explain why the prisoner at the beginning of the episode tried to stab his own heart? What does yure (ghost) have to do with the crime?

I don't think they have revealed the full details behind the attempted stabbing just yet, but all we know so far is that the man who did it was apparently part of the same prison cult that was started up by the 'prisoner rights' cult leader that was later found dead in his cell. One of the guards said that over 40 prisoners in that particular jail belonged to his cult. More should be revealed in Part 2 or 3, I'm guessing.

Another prisoner who tried to avenge the cult leader's death said that the leader's ghost came to him in a dream and informed him that he did not kill himself, but was actually murdered by one of the guards - which is why the prisoner killed that guard to get his revenge.

As for the scene with Kaburagi and the mystery woman, I think it was just setting up the fact that he is probably single and might be a "bad boy" womanizing type of character. UTB cut it off at the most confusing moment. LOL!

There wss one scene I didn't understand. Kaburagi was standing outdoors in front of a building while he was on the phone with Ukyo. From the background, a Caucasian woman walks close by and Kaburagi says something to her that causes her to react by slapping him so hard that he drops his phone several feet away.

What was it he said to her that seemed to offend her?

Apparently Kaburagi is ladies man or this relationship is on the rocks.

Re: J-Drama: 相棒 14 (Partners 14)

<EPISODE 1> (Part 2)

Ahh, I don't like Kaburagi! It was somewhat relieving to find out at the end that he was playing both sides (Ukyo and the suspect) in order to be the 'good cop' and get the suspect to warm up to him and thus reveal the truth, but still, I don't trust him entirely. The last partner Ukyo had who was working against him at first (spying on him) was Kanbe - but if I remember correctly, Kanbe kept his distance from Ukyo and never really pretended to be his friend. Kaburagi is trying to be as nice and friendly as possible, but we saw him go to different people with information and gossip about Ukyo. We'll see what happens. The good news is that he was truthful to Ukyo about wanting to be the good cop to Ukyo's bad cop, but I still have trouble trusting him.

Interesting how Kaburagi wants to call Ukyo by his first name - Ukyo-san. In polite Japanese, referring to a colleague by their first name indicates a very close relationship between the two people - especially when a subordinate (like Kaburagi) is referring to his or her superior (in this case, Ukyo). Since Ukyo and Kaburagi have just met, it would be customary for Kaburagi to refer to Ukyo by his last name - Sugishita-san. It creates a polite distance between the two people. The only other partner who has called Ukyo by his first name was Kame, but those two knew and worked closely with each other for years. Both Kanbe and even Kaito called Ukyo by his last name. It'll be interesting to see if Kaburagi continues calling Ukyo by his first name - I thought it was a cheap trick to appear 'close' to Ukyo and thus get more information out of him.

One thing is for sure: Ukyo does not like to be called Mr. Dangerous. LOL!

I found it a bit odd that Itami and Serizawa approached Kaburagi for information. I was kind of hoping that they would have Ukyo's back and stand by him (without explicitly making it seem like they were) against his new partner. But then again, it is Itami we are dealing with. If the higher-ups tell him to do something, he is going to do it without fail.

I guess there is still hope for Kaburagi yet. It took a while for all of Ukyo's partners to warm up to him. With Kanbe, it took one whole season! Perhaps there is a lot about Kaburagi's backstory which has yet to come out. It might influence why he acts the way he does. I find his behavior bizarre at times. He seems to have a sense of humor, isn't afraid to speak his mind, and can be awfully giggly and even obnoxious at times - even when compared to Ukyo's new 'chatty' self. At the same time, he gives off the impression that he is hiding something, and cannot be easily trusted. We'll see.

Another thing that Ukyo is peeved by is the fact that Kaburagi insulted his investigation techniques. How he twists the truth in order to get a confession out of a suspect, or how he directly twists what the suspect says to influence the outcome of a case.

The case is interesting - we are now waiting to see whether or not the murder of the prison activist was blamed on the wrong officer in order to eliminate him from the force. Ukyo is also curious to see what role the "voice of the ghost" played in all of this - could it have been faked by one of the officers in order to incite the prisoner to take revenge on the wrong person? That's what it is looking like.

The concept of prisoners stepping on artifacts belonging to the activist in order to prove that they are not secret followers is nothing knew. The Tokugawa Shogunate used this method in the 1600s (through the 1700s and up until the 1800s, actually) in order to seek out 'hidden Christians.' They would force suspected Christians to step on holy images in order to prove that they are not Christian. Those who couldn't do it were immediately executed or jailed, but many Christians did step on the images while secretly clinging on to their faith - which is how they were able to pass on their faith from generation to generation until the practice of Christianity was allowed again once Japan began its Westernization process after 1868.

The conclusion of this episode, Part 3, airs next week!

Re: J-Drama: 相棒 14 (Partners 14)

Kaburagi - I'm liking him more than I did before. I'm impressed by his intuitive skills in taking action at the right time without showing his hand. He is also very capable at navigating his way through the MPD bureaucratic "white water" with all the boulders hidden beneath the surface.

The way Kaburagi deals with Ukyo fascinates me. He's heard a lot of negative things about Ukyo from the higher-ups at MPD; consequently, has to watch his own back. Once he gets a broader "take" on who and what Ukyo is—and Ukyo's mode of operation—we'll probably see a different Kaburagi.

At present, though, Kaburagi is taking advantage of his opportunity to observe and learn from Ukyo's investigative skills. It's interesting how much free rein he gives Ukyo, especially since Ukyo has no official standing and is definitely the outsider at present. Yet, Kaburagi invites Ukyo to tag along on K's current investigative mission.

My overall view of Kaburagi is that he is a whole lot more intelligent than he acts. He and Ukyo's minds flow in sync professionally. When I step back, I see Kaburagi as a sort of Itami-Ukyo combination, combining intelligence with a highly stylized, charismatic personality and mannerisms.

The scene that tickled me most was the little exchange between Itami and Kaburagi about the "demon above" (Ukyo). Kaburagi's reply was something like, 'Yes, but he's a cute demon.' It was also heartening when Itami loyally offered the comment about Ukyo that his "delusional" scenarios should be taken seriously, since they are frequently the reality of a case.
