Re: KDrama Rewatch in the Den : Bizarre Bunch

57

Just finished watching and I definitely could have kept on going ( but I didn't ) I am starting to feel sorry for Sukhyun in all this too . He has waited hours ( apparently ) for Jongnam to come back .
He wants to apologize for his mother - which Jongnam accepts partially and partially turns the blame back on herself . I do not agree with Jongnam - it is NOT her fault , but I think she is trying to keep things light so she can get out of there .

When she tells Sukhyun that there is no more reason for the two of them to meet , he looks startled .
It is as if that was not what he had in mind , but I am not convinced that he has thought any of this out .When we see him playing the cello in the next scene , I know he is troubled .Kiwoong has told HAein that "he only plays when he is really worried about something "

I feel for all the opportunities of life that Sukhyun has enjoyed , he is not as comfortable in this own skin as Kiwoong is .

Maybe it is me , but I think the scene where Haein and Sukhyun discuss where to go on their honeymoon is rather awkward . Sukhyun doesn't really care where they go because he doesn't really care about ANY of it . Has he thought any of this through ? NO > why emoticon
No idea .

I am not qualified to make a diagnosis for Nara , but she is absolutely pathological . Does she hear herself ? What a piece of work when she goes to Jaeok and tells her how Jongnam practically coerced Sukhyun into going to the amusement park . What is he , 6 ? Can anyone force him to do anything ?

I know Jaeok doesn't believe it , thankfully . What a nerve telling her to turn Jongnam out !

Re:

Haven't watched 57 yet but wanted to say, YES Addie, I think we are all qualified to give a diagnosis on Nara.. She is certifiable and cruel and controlling and vicious. And it only gets worse with her. I have tried over the years (when re watching episodes of BB) to understand where she is coming from... how she got to be so horrible.

All I can think is that first, she couldn't have children and that must have made her horribly sad. Then she got an opportunity, by force and coercion of sorts, to get a child. I will never forget how she was willing to take Suky to America to save him if she could keep him. She never cared about the sacrifice a mother made or the pain anyone else went through as long as she got what she wanted.... People can be crazy when they want a child.

Nara ended up with a husband who cheated constantly on her. We don't know the beginnings of that so it's hard to guess but I do anyway. She must have been very hurt by Jaemen in the beginning and turned all her love and attention to her new son. She became obsessed with him over time. To me she's got some deep rooted fear of losing what she now believes she owns (Suky). I just don't know what else to think about why she is the way she is. But as many people in her life that she is hurting, she's hurting most who she loves most. Poor Suky.

Re:

57... Suky waits for Jongnam, who had gone out drinking w/Kiwoong. She doesn't want to talk to Suky but he tells her he's waited a long time and wants to talk. So they end up at the bar Suky likes to go to (he is acquainted w/the bartender). He apologizes to Jongnam for what his mother did. Of course, Jongnam takes all the blame. He says violence should never be used. Uh, do you know your mother Suky? lol

He gets a call from haein while talking to Jongnam and J leaves the bar. Suky seems kinda sad she left but I guess he understood why.

They run into each other in the elevator (a popular place for these two to meet). He tells her about the guest opening that Haein had mentioned to him and told her to go to Haein about it if she were still interested.

Kiwoong is testing out a new product, a camera, and tests it on Haein and then Jongnam. When Suky comes along and looks at the pictures he passes by Haein's quickly (but she only said one sentence so.....). When Suky had Jongnam on the screen he seems completely enveloped in watching her and didn't even hear Kiwoong talking to him. Kiwoong takes the camera and seems displeased by knowing what Suky was so engrossed in looking at.

Nara.. oh this woman is just horrid. She goes to Jaeok and complains about her taking in this 'stray'. How can she be so hateful when Jaeok considers Jongnam her daughter? Jaeok does find out about Jongnam going with Suky to the amusement park and later scolds Jongnam about it. "Why didn't you go with Kiwoong? " I wish Jongnam would have asked what the difference was if they are both cousins. But I do understand her concerns... Suky is engaged.

Suky has dinner w/Haein and she's all about talking about a honeymoon. Suky doesn't seem a bit interested and tells her he would like a nice quiet beach but also tells her SHE can go wherever she wants. lol

Gram is trying to force Kiwoong to go on a blind date . He agrees as long as she lets Sukhyun get married . It doesn't work - they are at an impasse .

Nara is speaking to Sukhyun again and he seems relieved . I 'll bet she has done this push pull with him the whole time to keep him in line . Haein asks Sukhyun if he is an American citizen . I think it is interesting that whenever Nara is trapped in her lies , she asks who told rather than deal with the lie itself . Smoke and mirrors .

Haein cannot get through to Sukhyun . He is increasingly distracted , and Haein probably can not figure out what is wrong . Whatever she thought courtship and engagement would be , I'll bet this is NOT it . She doesn't know what to do .

Jongnam is stuck in the same situation as Kiwoong - she has to see Sukhyun all the time . She has also lost Mr Pooh , the dog . She wants to get back to her life and wants to be a guest . That is something she can do Haein realizes she had prior knowledge of the guest position .

Be back tomorrow emoticon

Re:

So right Addie. Nara gets caught in one of her lies she had manufactured about Suky and all she can do is act mad at who ever told. I guess it's right, there is no such thing as a secret. It all comes out eventually.

Jongnam gets the nerve up to ask Haein about the guest host positions. Haein is very cordial and tells her to talk the next day about it (since her and Suky were on their way to a meeting)... and re that incident, Suky was out in his car waiting for Haein and staring at Jongnam's scooter. Even looking at her scooter seemed to give him a bit of joy because he had a sweet smile on his face. Haein came out and got in the car and all he could do still was stare at Jongnam getting on her scooter.

Grandma still refused to approve the marriage. I would say poor Haein... poor Suky, but I can't. Suky isn't even interested in where to go on his honeymoon. He is so unattached to the marriage issue. He's willing to go along but he isn't willing to join in the planning.

The conception dream of the moon or the golden carp - is everyone living in la la land? They all go along with whatever Nara says she dreamt before she had Suky.. And now Suky's citizenship is on the table.

Haein the suspicious one. now she's wondering how Jongnam found out about the guest positions. What difference does it make if Suky did tell her? Is he not even allowed to speak to Jongnam? I really dislike how Haein grills Suky or anyone else about Suky. I'm trying to look at this objectively and trying to see if she has a right to be so suspicious but at this point, she really is just being irritating (at least to me).

Okdoo measures the vest she's knitting against Byungdoo. I would think it was mine too if she did that to me. Byungdoo is so happy thinking he's getting a vest for Christmas.

Re:

When Jongnam gets slapped by Nara, she may realize for the first time why she's getting slapped. Its about her luring Suky, at least according to Nara. In Nara's mind she's coming between Suky and Haein. She asks Jongnam if she feels guilty, among other things and when she mentions Sunday Suky understands, Jongnam is just starting to.

I don't think Suky saw the slap coming. He did grab his mother's arm so she couldn't do it again. He looked horrified. He's much more civilized than she is and I think it floored him that she could do such a thing. Suky leaving without a word, aside from the look that passed between him and Jongnam, was all he could do. He didn't want the situation to escalate and wanted to get his mother out of there without further incident. Who knows what would've happened had he stopped to help Jongnam pick up the postcards and try to comfort her.

One more thing. Some wives, whose husbands cheat, blame the "other woman". This is because they don't want to see the man they married as the dirtbag he actually is and don't want to end the marriage. Except for Nara and Jaeman, of course.

Nara doesn't want to really see Suky's part in this. She'd rather blame Jongnam, so she can go on seeing Suky as her perfect creation. Its always going to be Jongnam's fault. Nara did ask him if he likes Jongnam and he avoided the question. I'm not sure he knew how to answer. He hasn't examined his feelings yet. He does know he liked spending time with Jongnam. When she let him know she knew about Haein, he knew he wouldn't be spending time with her anymore. She made that clear.

Suky's very angry about what his mother did, but shut his mouth when she produced the picture of the two of them and asked if he's taking after Jaeman. She also asked if Haein knew about his seeing Jongnam and he has to admit she doesn't. He really wanted that picture and was sorry to see Nara rip it up.

Suky explains to his parents how he met Jongnam. I don't remember seeing that. She doesn't believe that Jongnam lost the watch, she says she must have sold it. That's what Suky thought too, at first, but he's gotten to know Jongnam and he knows she wouldn't do that. Did Nara forget the watch was worth only $100? His defending Jongnam and saying everything was his fault drives Nara crazy.

Suky can't get what happened out of his mind the next day and when Haein speaks to him he's very short with her. He seems very distracted. Once Jongnam knows about Suky and Haein as a couple, he becomes more and more miserable in Haein's company and just miserable in general. Jongnam won't play with him anymore and he's not going to like that.

He runs into Jongnam and asks to speak to her. Jongnam's busy. He tells her to stop by his office on the way out. She doesn't. Neither of them can concentrate.

When he runs into Kiwoong and Kiwoong tells him he must be worried, Suky says "huh"?? Kiwoong says, about Gram's approval, Suky says "oh yeah, that" The furthest thing from his mind right now. He forgot all about it.

When he's out with Haein later that evening, he's missing in action. It looks to be a romantic date, but only to Haein. Suky's mind is somewhere else. Haein wants to talk honeymoon. Suky's "whatever". He cuts the evening short, leaving Haein a little confused, or is that Haein's only look.

Jongnam and Kiwoong are out together trying to lick their wounds. Jongnam admits to him that she did like Suky, but she's okay now, except for Nara. He tells her it sounds like more that "like". They're both depressed, Jongnam more. Its still new to her. Kiwoong's had more time to absorb Haein and Suky. They go to kareoke and try to work off their misery singing and dancing. It almost works, but not really.

We see flashbacks of Haein, looking beautiful and free-spirited pre-Suky. And we see Jongnam and Suky's relationship and how it builds.

Who ever thought that Suky and Haein were a good match? Oh, that's right, Nara. The two of them never look happy, unless they're apart. Some match!

When Jongnam gets home she finds Suky waiting for her in the stairwell. Its the first time he's done that, but certainly not the last. That stairwell sees a lot of Suky action.

I have to say Suky's becoming more and more handsome now that his hair is growing out. I'm just saying...

I do notice that he's in no great hurry to get to the wedding shop or talk honeymoon talk with Haein. And I do notice that no matter when he and Haein run into Jongnam he can't stop looking at her, even when she's walking away. And I notice that he's never "there", most of the time he's preoccupied and forgetful. Oh, yes and I'm not the only one who notices. Haein notices too.

I remember the stairwell scene so specifically it surprised me. The look of despair and hope, both at the same time, on Suky's face when Jongnam saw him standing there, told a whole story. I don't think he knows what he's doing at this point, he just had to see her.

Re:

When Jongnam first sees Suky on the staircase he looks embarrassed and nervous, so he starts a conversation as though it's like any other social call. When she doesn't look welcoming he starts to look desperate to talk to her. Next scene is at the cello bar. So she gives in.

Once again he opens with casual conversation and Jongnam tells him to cut to the chase. Here, he once AGAIN, apologizes for his mother. How many times will that wash?

Jongnam takes the blame for what happened. It sounds like she doesn't know why Nara hates her. She talks about Nara's fall, about her being rude, her not knowing how to address adults properly, she has a long list of faults. She says "I was wrong, so I got slapped". It made me think Jongnam was used to being slapped.

When she says "there's no reason for us to see each other again. Let's not create any more incidents for your mother to misunderstand" you know she gets it. She knows exactly why Nara hates her. Nothing to do with Jongnam being rude or out of line. Its all about Suky. Nara sees something in Suky that worries her and she thinks she can just swat Jongnam away like a fly.

Suky's face at that moment was very telling. Not see each other again? He did not like that idea. Haein's call interrupted their conversation, though everything that needed to be said was already said. These two spend a lot of time saying "goodbye".

He'd lied to Haein again. This time he didn't feel any guilt, at least not from where I'm sitting. He's told her he was meeting friends.

When he got back Jongnam was gone. That was a perfect time for her to make her exit. It showed her resolve. Their little play dates were over. See ya! Have a nice life. Smart girl!

Next scene we see Suky playing the cello and Jongnam walking to the bus. The music is so heavy and sad it befits their mood.

Gram is dedicated to getting Kiwoong married. She set up a blind date for him. She says the girl is well-behaved. Minsook doesn't think Kiwoong would like a girl without some spirit. Gram says, oh yeah, she's taking up dog-grooming.

Jaeman is trying to be the voice of reason between mother and son. There's no reasoning with Nara, but Suky took the bait.

When Jongnam and Suky run into each other on the elevator, both seem nervous. They don't know how to speak to each other, until Suky gets a brainstorm and mentions Jongnam being a guest. He tells her to ask Haein about it. That sort of breaks the ice, until they realize neither of them have pushed a button for the floor. Their fingers touch and they're off again. At least Jongnam is! She says she forgot something and leaves him on the elevator.

We see a scene where Kiwoong is testing a camera and gets a bit of footage with Jongnam on it. When Suky comes by, he watches Jongnam on tape and looks hypnotized. Kiwoong gets it and it makes Suky uncomfortable.

Nara's out and about, spreading her poison where ever she goes. First Jaeok to tell her about Jongnam and Suky. She reminds her that Suky never gave her problems before, so its all Jongnam's fault. Suky's certainly living on his past-perfomance record. Is he a puppet?

She tells Jaeok she shouldn't take in strays and to throw Jongnam out. She says she's worried about her. Jaeok tells her not to. She tells her Suky's the one who's engaged and he shouldn't have gone to the park.

Next stop Gram and the conception dream again. Like I said before why not just chalk it up to Gram's being old and forgetful and just let it go? I guess it was supposed to make us think about Suky's conception. I believe the moon dream was Minsook's.

When Jaeok questions Jongnam about the amusement park and Suky, Jongnam again takes the blame. But, she does tell her that she didn't know about Haein yet. I'm surprised someone doesn't wonder why Suky didn't come forth with that little piece of information. She tells Jongnam to stay away from him and Jongnam tells her there's nothing going on between them. Jaeok is a little disturbed that Jongnam is willing to let Suky off the hook for his part in this mess.

Haein and Suky at dinner, Haein talking honeymoon, Suky MIA. He tells her he doesn't care where they go. He has no real interest in honeymoon talk, until Haein tells him they should go to Florida, because he has US citizenship. He's floored and tells her she must be mistaken.

Nara's crazy stories are coming back to bite her. Keeping it simple would've made it easier to keep up with the lies. Its only a matter of time now.

Re:

Jongnam is the stronger in her determination not to let this go any further, because she doesn't want to be the one to cause a misunderstanding. She didn't know about Haein before, but now that she does she wouldn't dream of being a part of something that would hurt her.

When Kiwoong told her about the engagement he said that Suky was to be married in January and Jaeok told her he has a fiancee'. That hasn't changed, so Jongnam knows that she has to let go of all of the could'ves.

The thing is Suky and Jongnam have already said what needed to be said and it may have gone no further, who knows? They both get it. Suky's going to marry Haein. Nara fixes that by showing up and slapping her though.

Jongnam's gone on to greeting Suky in a formal manner. It sort of surprises him. Their conversations are now stilted. When Suky sees her his face goes all warm and sweet. Jongnam just gets guarded and nervous.

When Haein asks about Gram, Kiwoong does get that she doesn't look happy and asks if its something more than Gram. He's about to go into inappropriate territory again, but she has no chance to answer, because Suky shows up.

The American citizenship scenario that Nara started is so ridiculous and now more lies to cover her tracks. Nara's not as smart as she thinks. Her little house of cards is about to come tumbling down around her head.

Telling Gram the wedding date was already set was like a slap in the face. Its like, "I don't care what you say." Jaeman warned her not to be so challenging, but Nara really doesn't care. There will be a wedding, with or without Gram's approval. According to Nara.

Neither intended, bride or groom, seem to be making any real wedding plans, aside from Haein mentioning the honeymoon. Not even a visit to the wedding shop. I don't think its because of Gram. I think both of them, especially Haein, have trepidations. Suky's just somewhere else right now.

Jongnam runs into Haein and asks about being a guest. Haein is supportive and cordial to her.

When Suky sees Jongnam's scooter he gets that fuzzy feeling, imagine when he sees Jongnam get on it? Haein has to remind him to drive. Haein has to see it, because she asks him why he's so distracted. No real answer from Suky. What can he say?

I don't think Haein's at the point where she attributes his disinterest to Jongnam yet. I think she's just feeling neglected and insecure, because of his attitude. She'll catch on soon, but not yet. Little by little, Haein finds out how uninterested Suky is in her. I mean if you're in Haein's place, you would be feeling very insecure. Every little move of Suky is being observed by her now.

I understand Suky's being drawn to Jongnam. Who wouldn't be? She's so unaffected and real. You never have to guess what she's thinking. This is all new to Suky. He likes it. .

One thing I wanted to comment on is, that though Suky and Haein seem to be spending more time together, he cares less and less about pleasing her. He really does look as though he's doing a job now. They show no affection for each other at all and at this point Haein's trying harder than Suky.

He extends an invitation to dinner at his parents home, at Nara's request, and then doesn't seem to care if Haein shows up or not. She's sort of put off by that and tells him. It doesn't seem to affect him though.

Kiwoong agrees to go on a blind date with one condition. She gives Suky permission to marry. Gram says no.

One thing is about Jaeok and Jongnam's conversation about Haein. When Jaeok referred to her as Suky's fiancee', you could see a change in Jongnam's face, very small, but there. She started singing Haein's praises and when Jaeok asked her if she was jealous she said no, not anymore. It almost seemed as though Jongnam was trying to get used to the idea and was hardening herself against feeling sad, by speaking of Haein so openly.

Haein realizes that Suky must've told Jongnam about the guest spot. So what's the problem with that? She tried to find out if kiwoong told her and then narrowed it down to Suky, because Suky was the only one who knew before the fact. Again, So What? This girl is so much work. She's upset by this.

When Jongnam relives Nara's abuse it made her feel shame for a moment. It seems Nara took something away from her and she needed to get her footing back and reconfirm who she is. Hence "no matter what, I'm Kim Jong Nam and Jongnam loves you".

Jongnam goes to visit Mr. Pooh and sees the dog is doing well. Daejong doesn't want to give the dog up. Jongnam realizes her connection between the dog and Suky and gets sad.

Nara realizes how little of the wedding plans are made and is surprised. Suky asks about his American citizenship. Nara's even more surprised. Dumb, arrogant Nara.

Love, love Suky in the green sweater in the cafe' scene. Beautiful color for him. Okay, he looks good in any color. He's a handsome guy.

Nara's backpedalling on the Sukhyun was born in the US story would be comical if it was not so pathetic . Of course , it was all Yoojung's fault for remember ing the story . I though it was interesting to see how fast Jaeman jumped in to help .Nara's self question as to why these things always happen could be answered in two ways ....1 ) Karma 2) the truth ALWAYS comes out .

I am cynical but I wonder if Jaeman wanted to save Nara's face because of the brownie points or the financial rewards it could mean for him . It certainly did not stop him from seeking out Okdoo at the cafe .
I am not convinced Sukhyun believed either one of them .

I am staring to feel sorry for Haein . I am not saying that she is madly in love with Sukhyun , but she entered this engagement in good faith . She would have to be blind not to see how distracted he is . He is basically telling her to take care of the wedding details herself . I don't think it is too much to say lets postpone this wedding , but no one will say it .

Haein is reaching out to help Jongnam because she thinks they will be connected by family . I do not think she has any ulterior or malicious motives . Jongnam continues to be put in a very uncomfortable position . She does not in any way encourage Sukhyun's attention , while he is looking for excuses to see her .

This is just sad .

Kiwoong keeps telling Gram that he will go on blind dates i f she will approve the wedding and she just won't .
