Re: How Did You Come To K-drama? aka How Did K-drama Catch You In Its Snares?

It's a little 4 x 4 box (I'm guessing) that hooks up to your TV and makes it internet capable if you don't have a smart TV. You don't have to have a new TV for it to work but you do have to have high speed internet and wireless internet. So the dramas are being "streamed" to my TV instead of my computer. If anyone is curious, I'd be more than happy to go into more detail if you want to PM me. You should also check with your cable provider to see what their usage cap is. My cable company has a 250 GB per month limit. I checked my usage last week and we had used only about 100GB and we were constantly using it when we were home.

Instead of conversing via Private Message, might I suggest you post a new topic in the Tech Forum? Many of us are not familiar with Roku and would love to be in on any discussion about it.

The topic could be titled: About Roku... (or something similar)

Then anyone could ask questions and we could all gain the information, too. I had never heard of Roku before you mentioned it, and am interested. I already have a question, too!

Re: How Did You Come To K-drama? aka How Did K-drama Catch You In Its Snares?

It is fascinating to read how we all came to kdramas. I have been trying to remember how it was with my interest. I can't remember when I first saw ladies in hanbok in an old farmhouse in the countryside. I know there was a grandma and a few grandsons. They were just out of teens and working. One worked on the railroad and rode a bicycle to and from home. Two sisters separated since childhood and of course when found out the rich one hated the poorer one. Both fell for lad on bike etc etc. Since this was with no English subs I was guessing and all because I saw the hanbok on the older ladies.
It was just a chance surfing the channels but it was years ago. Until then I was only into Japanese programmes and films for about twenty years or more.

Attic Cat was the first drama where I learned how to download and burn a disc. Several of us were taught by a lovely young man who seemed to be a graduate student in a Uni somewhere in the Mid west. Maybe Ohio. He was more than helpful and of course it meant we all kept on delving into kdrama. I saw the first burst out drama for Ahn Jae Wook. I fell for him in a big way. He was a a big idol singer in his role and I loved his voice. Later got many of his albums. Drama was' Star in my Heart.' I have seen all of his work since including his Chinese concerts which were marvellous.

I also loved Hotelier and thought it a wonderful eyeopener about working in a hotel. Of course at that time Bae Yong Jun was the handsome hero we all adored. It was after that the the scales fell from my eyes and I lost the rose coloured glasses. It was his role and the character I loved and not the actor. In fact I soon realised he could not act very well. He is a business man at heart.

I thought Phoenix was a splendid drama with such good cast. Lee Seo Jin !!!

Really there were so many dramas during the day and night and I can't even remember them all. Now and then I see an actor and think Oh I know them but when and where is too far back to really remember again.
I no longer burn discs. No more room on shelves. anyway I would have to learn all over again how to put the subs on the video. Had a few PC changes since that time.
I still admire Kim Rae won and Ahn Jae and Lee Seo Jin and many more. Seems to be a list of male actors.... Well I must admit I always liked the men best.

I hope HawnGirl can stop by and give some advice, too

Peggy, I have moved your post on Roku to the "About Roku!" thread in the Tech Forum. That way, we can keep all the pertinent information together. —nchristi

I bought a roku streaming player and began exploring the world of streaming videos. I started with Huluplus, and on there I found Dae Jang Geum or as they called it 'Jewel in the Palace' , but it had commercials and so I googled the series to learn more about it and found it was being shown on Dramafever without commercials and immediately signed up.

Since then we (thankfully dh loves these as much as I do) have watched Dong-Yi, Yi-San, Jumong, Tree with Deep Roots, Queen Soen Doek, The Duo, Gye Baek, Emperor of the Seas and I found someone on ioffer selling some we couldn't get any place else - Great King Sejong, Great King Gwanggaeto, Hur Jun, Sangdo, Daemang to name a few.

It is nice to find your forum and learn more about the world of k-drama emoticon

Re: How Did You Come To K-drama? aka How Did K-drama Catch You In Its Snares?

I guess I missed this post before and haven't been active on CJKDramas since My Love My Family/Believe in Love, but still check what's being commented on here (always insightful) when I can.

I came to K-dramas via Singapore. I live in New York State, but was working in Singapore for 6 weeks during the Summer of 2010. Some nights I'd turn on the TV there and they had shows from all over Asia. I soon realized that the ones from Korea were just the best in my opinion. I got hooked on 2 that didn't end until after I got back home. One was Secret Agent Miss Oh (aka My Country Calls or something like that) and the other was All About Marriage (aka Please, Marry Me or Marry Me, Please). I liked them both for different reasons - Miss Oh because I found it very humerous and AAM because I really liked the part of the story involving the schoolteacher and the widower with the son in her class. When I got home, I managed to watch the end of both on KBS' former paid online site. Since then, I've found the free sites, like Viki and Dramafever and have also purchased some DVDs.

Since I liked Han Sang-Jin so much in AAM, that led me to My Too Perfect Sons (aka Sons of Sol Pharmacy House) which I bought on DVD. That's probably my favorite K-drama so far and it also got me following Lee Pil-Mo and I pretty much watch anything he's in (new or old). I recently bought the DVDs for Golden Era of Daughter-in-Law (which LPM is in). It's a little older drama and I think K-drama quality has improved a lot since then (although I'm only 6 episodes in so far so who knows).

Unless I want to pay too much per channel to add a Korean channel onto my cable (no packages where I live for these), I only have mNet. mNet is starting to show some K-dramas, but not the genre (which I'm starting to think is more middle-aged - oh no!) I enjoy most. Viki and Dramafever are very helpful though and most recently I've watched King 2 Hearts and now A Gentleman's Dignity (which is a new favorite). And, after reading the posts here I'll look into getting a Roku box too.

Anyway, I guess you could say I came to K-drama by going to Asia, but ironically not to Korea.
