Re: K-Drama: 사랑을 믿어요 (My Love, My Family)

As is typical with Korean dramas, all newlyweds have babies. So there are the potentials for Cheolsu and Myunghui, Ujin and Yunhui and maybe one unexpected couple. These events, if they happen, always mellow the relationships between antagonists in Korean dramas.

For examples, look at "Happiness in the Wind" and "Smile Dong, Hae."

It won't surprise me if we have a "2 (or 5) Years Later" conclusion with Cheolsuk and Partner married, with a kid or two running around. That would be a great conclusion for our "unfeminine" Cheolsuk.

It's been a while since I've been able to catch up on the dialogue from deleted scenes. So, some of these are fairly old.

1. Ep. 52 - Dad (D) & Mom (M) in the garden in the evening before she is going in for surgery. Mom is looking at the flowers, enjoying the breeze and tells D that she really loves the summer. D says he doesn't as it's too hot. M likes the summer because the flowers & trees grow. D is looking concerned through this discussion to the point where M asks what's the matter.
D - You have so much white hair.
M - I can't help it. I'm old now.
D - Honey!
M - What is it?
D- I'm sorry.
M- Sorry for what?
D - I think I've made you lead a hard life.
M - Do you feel guilty because I'm ill?
D - Yes . . I feel as though we've lived together a long time.
M - You should be grateful I married you and lived with you until now. (By her demeanor, she's clearly joking at this point)
D - I'm grateful. Of course I am.
M - You should be honored.
D - Of course I'm honored.
D stares at M and M stares at the sky. The next scene starts with Yunhui looking at slippers in a store.

2. Ep. 53 - D & M in the M's hospital room after M's surgery. This comes right after they show Ujin in a hotel room and Yunhui washing a towel also at the hospital. D gives M something to drink in a mug. They start by discussing how M feels. She says it's starting to hurt, but D says she took a painkiller not long ago and although M says she needs another, D talks her out of that.
D is looking at M.
M - What is it?
D - Thank you
M - For what?
D - Just . . .
M - for staying alive?
D - Don't talk that way
M - What could we do if I had died?
D - Honey!
M - I'm joking
D - Don't make jokes like that
M - Don't take it so seriously. Alright. I won't say that again.
D - You better not
M - I had a thought before I went under anasthesia. What if I don't wake up? Who would I miss the most? Who will cry the most if I don't wake up?
D - Did you think that?
M - I thought about that as I went into the operating room. (She starts crying a little). All these memories came to mind. I started to cry.
D - You must have been scared
M - Yes
D - So what did you do?
M - I thought about the thing that was most precious to me
D - Most precious?
M - Yes
D - The trees in the yard? [This has me remembering a scene early in this series where D says something to the effect that M should date the tree.]
M - No
D - The chest in the bedroom?
M - No. You.
D - Me?
M - Yes.
D - I'm the most precious thing?
M - Yes
D - (holds M's hand & they look @ each other) "What about the children?"
M - Forget them. They're useless.
D - They're not useless.
M - Look at us now. They've all gone home. Only you're here.
D - They have to go to work in the morning. Donghun refused to go. I told him to go home & sleep with his wife & daughter.
M - That's why you're the best.
D - Okay. Thanks.
M - I'm grateful too.
D & M stare at each other as Yunhui starts to come in with the wet towel. She hangs back and then backs out of the room and walks outside the hospital and looks at the sky. Next we see Ujin in the hotel room looking out the window and drinking something in a can.

More deleted scenes:

1. Ep. 54 Myeonghui (M) and Cheolsu (C) are drinking wine upstairs over the soup restaurant. M is upset worrying about her Mom and C is trying to comfort her.
C - Is it the first time someone has been sick in your family?
M tells him yes, it's her first time. Her grandfather died before she was born and no one's been sick before. She is really upset. Why is her Mom sick?
C - I can understand how you feel. This may upset you, but it's a natural process. As time passes, children grow up and parents get older. When children become parents, their parents . . .
M - Don't say that. She goes on to tell him that she wants her parents to live forever. C starts by telling her that can't happen, but seeing how upset M is he ends up telling her what she wants to hear and guaranteeing that her parents will live for the rest of her life. C is holding M's shoulders when his sister Cheolsuk (CK) comes home. CK grabs the wine bottle and drinks out of it. She also says that she's hungry and "don't sit there cuddling. M get me some food." CK also tells M to set the table and then heads into her room. C follows CK and yells at her.
C - Don't you know what M is going through right now?
CK - I heard the surgery went well. What's the big deal about her parents being ill?
C explains that M is very upset.
CK - C, our father was ill for 7 years before he passed away. Our Mom died from a car accident on her way to work one day. I became an orphan at 19. I've lived with no parents for the past 10 years.
C - You really have a lot of things against M.
CK - That's not it. I'm just asking that she doesn't make it so obvious. She's a married adult now. She should act like one. I'm saying this because she whines all the time. Cancer treatments are improved a lot. Most are curable early. She should think about how bad she's been to her parents. She should be quiet and repent her mistakes.
C - That's enought for tonight. Let's talk about this later . . but you'd better not tell M this or you'll be in big trouble.
Next we briefly see M in the couple's bedroom talking on the phone with her Mom (in hospital) & crying.
Then we see C talking to himself in the room/hall between the 2 bedrooms. C says/thinks - " I have to do something about her. Should I marry her off? I was going to keep her because she's so pretty and cute. But I can't keep her now."

2. Ep. 55 - Cheolsu (C) and Myeonghui (M) are returning from dinner at Mom & Dad's. This was the dinner after Mom got home from the hospital. Outside they are talking about Mom being better and are happy. They get to the soup restaurant and find Cheolsuk (CK) eating dinner with Gyeongjae (G) (this is Ujin's (now CK's) business partner). CK and G are talking about the business, expenses, meetings, etc.
C wants to know who the guy is with his sister and then is also surprised to learn that M knows G too. M tells C that G is Ujin's business partner. CK tells C that G is now her business partner as Ujin left his business to her when he left. M & C go upstairs.
Downstairs - G lets CK know he is impressed by how many people she knows and how popular she is (and CK is bragging about herself too). G says his only friend is Ujin and he's gone, so "I will just follow you." At one point CK asks G why he is looking at her (as they're eating) and G says that his grandmother said "women who have good appetites have good hearts." He also says that CK seems like a good woman. CK has heard the appetite thing too often and jokes about wanting to hear that she's sexy and chic instead. They laugh. Later when he leaves CK walks G outside and G takes a long time to leave (keeps coming up with something else to say). After he's gone, CK says to herself that she thinks G is "half-witted".
Upstairs - M shows C her plan to get CK married. C is surprised. The plan is entitled "Mission to Marry Off my SIL". C looks at the plan.
C - It's like an Olympic athlete training schedule. Jump rope 3,000 times/day, 100 situps, 100 push ups, 100 laps, 1 meal/day. Do you want my sister to be a national sports representative?
M - She has to do this for me to introduce her to someone. That's what she has to do to get married.
C wants to know what that has to do with getting married. M tells him that CK needs to lose at least 20 kgs. C thinks she looks perfect & is pretty and wants to erase "20 kg target weight loss" from the plan. He also tells M that "if he (hypothetical husband for CK) doesn't love her just the way she is . . . I can't give her away."
M - Then will you keep her by your side forever?
C - Yes, I will
M is clearly upset. CK comes upstairs and asks why they're fighting. "Is the honeymoon phase over?" C tells CK to go rest and to himself says he doesn't think she needs to lose weight.

3. Ep 56 - Dad (D) and Yunhui (Y) on the swing outside. Y has come home from dinner at Ujin's house and is sitting on the swing. Dad comes outside and is surprised to see her.
D - Why didn't you come inside? I was waiting for you. How was it?
Y - We just had dinner and she spoke to me.
D - What did she say?
Y - She said to do a good job.
D - I see. Why do you look so blue?
Y - I'm worried about whether I can do a good job like she told me to. I'm not good enough to meet her standards. I'm worried I won't be able to meet her expectations. I'm worried and I feel burdened.
D - You have Ujin. You have him, don't worry.
Y - Dad.
D - I was against your marriage until the end. Who knows what will happen? Even if life is short you'll live at least 30 or 40 years together. If something happens . . . neither family will be able to do anything about it. I thought it would pass. But do you know why I let you go with Ujin today? Because of one thing. After your Mom & I pass away, at least you won't be unhappy this way. I can't guarantee what will happen in the future. You could feel attracted by a beauty spot on their nose at first. But you could end up breaking up because of that later on. Ujin knows how you've lived. He understands you and he can encourage you. He won't bring up your past and hurts. That's why I let you go.
Y - Is that why?
D - Yes. But Ujin's not really fit to be my SIL.
Y - Excuse me?
D - He had long hair when he came from the States. Why do musicians have to grow their hair anyway?
Y - It's charismatic.
D - It is not. Men shouldn't grow their hair.
Y - It's short now
D - He could grow it again
Y - Dad. Please be good to him.
D - Are you taking his side because he's going to be your husband?
Y - I'm not taking his side.
D - Do you prefer Ujin or me? Tell me the truth.
Y - Of course!
D - Of course?
Y - He's the best! My Dad, that is! (hugs him - at this point they seem half goofing around and half serious to me). You're the best man in the world. You're the most charismatic man in the world. Then it's Ujin.
D - You mean it?
Y - Of course I do. Dad, thank you so much for letting me marry Ujin. I'll make sure we're happy. (puts her head on his shoulder)
D - Good.

Deleted scenes from most recent episodes:

1. Ep. 57 - Ujin (U), U's Dad (UD) and U's Mom (H) at their house. This is right after H gets off the phone with Granny who called to say they had to come for an in-laws dinner. UD is surprised about this dinner/meeting.
UD - Why bother? We all know each other.
H - That's what I'm saying, but what can we do? Mother (Granny) loves to create a fuss.
UD mentions that there are things to discuss and gifts to buy too, but "what am I supposed to say to my brother? Hello in-law?"
U - She just wants us to eat together.
UD tells U to be quiet and that this situation is all because of U. Dad is acting put out about the whole thing.
U - Dad stop it. You agreed to let me marry her.
UD - I never agreed. Your Mom did.
U - What?
D - We're supposed to be a family. Why didn't anyone ever ask what I thought about this marriage? I'm still against it. I'm not for it.
H - Why?
UD - I don't get anything out of it.
H - Do you think I agreed to it because I gain from it?
UD - You agreed to the marriage so U wouldn't go to the States. Yunhui will be your DIL soon. She's scared of you, so she'll do whatever you tell her to. Once they have a grandchild, you have U, Yunhui, and our grandchild on your side. You gain from it don't you?
H - It's good for you if you have a grandchild too.
UD - What if the baby cries every time I try to write?
U - (laughs) Dad.
UD - Be quiet. Is getting married all you care about?
H - What are you trying to say?
UD - I'm going to be a FIL. How much longer do I have to be stuck in the basement? I should be permitted to the ground floor now. Why? Because of my status as a FIL.
H - There's no room for you.
UD - Yes there is
H - What's wrong with you?
Then UD follows H into her bedroom.
UD - Honey! Let me upstairs.
H tells him no as she hates seeing him walk around on the ground floor.
UD - You can't keep me locked up downstairs once Yunhui's here.
H - I never locked you up. I'll just tell her you need to write in the basement study.
UD is "concerned" (as in using this to further his argument) that Yunhui could tell her family how he lives.
H - If that happens, you, U and Yunhui will all be thrown out. Be thankful that I gave you a basement study.
UD asks for another room on the ground floor (a guest room).
H - Where will my sisters sleep when they visit from the States? (who knew she had sisters?)
UD mentions other options for the sisters including the room where H keeps her shoes & bags. H tells him she'd like to sell him so she can buy another bag and tells him to go downstairs.
UD - Give me a room! Let me upstairs.
H calls him a useless old man.
U comes downstairs, hears this fighting going on, and leaves.

2. Ep 57 - Myeonghui (M) comes home from her parent's house (the in-laws dinner with Ujin and his parents) to find Cheolsu (C) and Cheolsuk (CK) eating upstairs. M is upset because they are eating all this food at 10 at night. C says he didn't have dinner.
M - This is wrong. If you do this, your efforts over the last month will go to waste. How can you do this to me? You told me you'd cooperate.
C - I didn't eat dinner and CK didn't either. Can't you let it go this time?
M - C, are you going to be uncooperative like this?
CK gets mad and asks M who she is to tell them what they can and can't eat. "Are you our trainer?"
M - Aren't you going on a blind date?
CK - I'm not going on one.
M - You're not getting married then?
CK - No, I'm not.
M - Then do you intend to live here forever?
CK - I get it. That's why you want to introduce me to a man, isn't it? You don't like me, so you want to get rid of me quickly. That's why you want me to lose weight and meet a man.
M - That's right.
CK - What?
M and CK are both upset.
Then we see M and C in their bedroom.
C - Let's stop. How could you say to her face that you want to get rid of her?
M - It's the truth.
C - That's really bad of you.
M tells him that he needs to wake up and that acting the way he does isn't helping CK at all. "Do you want her to be a poor girl who follows her brother her whole life?" She goes on to tell him that CK needs to break away and become independent. M and C disagree over whether one has to be pretty and thin to be feminine. C says CK may not be as pretty as M, but she is a female. C says CK is little, cute and adorable in his eyes - like a pebble. M says this is driving her crazy.
Next we see CK, Ujin, the business partner and the boy singers heading up the road for the gift giving/buying scenes.

3. Ep 58 - Donghun (D) & Cheolsu (C) on the phone. This is the day after the gift giving/buying. C is all embarassed about his sister's behavior (including taking the money). D is fine with it and says CK just did it for fun.
C - It's not alright. I didn't educate her that way. I think she took more than $1,000 from you. I'm sorry.
C must offer to return it.
D - Don't return it. I gave it to her because I was happy to give Yunhui away. Don't do that

4. Ep 58 Myeonghui (M), Cheolsu (C) and Cheolsuk (CK) are in the schoolyard jumping (or trying to jump) rope. Gyeongjae (G) (Ujin's/CK's business partner) arrives later in the blue sequined track suit.
M is talking to C about how her Mom had more medical tests - results expected the next week. They're not sure if Mom can light the wedding candle (this scene precedes the wedding).
CK falls down and says - I can't do this. How much longer do I have to keep doing this?
C - You have 1,000 left. Get up.
M - C wanted to come out tonight. (This wasn't M's idea)
CK - Why are you both doing this to me?
C - Get up
CK asks why again.
C - How much longer do you intend to live with me?
CK - Until I die
C - Aren't you going to get married and start a family? I can't take care of you forever. (C has clearly changed his tune, but recall that he is not happy about CK's behavior at the gift giving/buying event)
M - I agree. (& she looks psyched!)
CK - C, you've changed.
C - I haven't changed, but it's been some time since I've married. M could get pregnant soon.
M - What is he talking about?
C - Once she's pregnant, we will need another room.
M is now looking concerned as she's realized what C is saying.
CK - I'll take care of the baby once they're born
C says something about just "don't crush them in your sleep" and then tells her to jump rope.
M steps in and takes CK's side, telling C he's being too hard on CK. C tells M to stay out of it.
C - She's so immature. How can she drink with all the men and carry the groom's gifts? She has no manners whatsoever.
M is trying to help CK. Then along comes G yelling CK's name, waving and running towards them.
C - Who are you?
G reintroduces himself.
C - Why are you here?
G - I heard CK is exercising every night. I want to join her.
C - Why do you want to . . .
M tells C to calm down and asks G if he lives nearby. G explains that he does not live nearby, and drove a fair distance. He rode his bike there to exercise and wants to talk to CK about business too. CK tells G that her brother took all the gift money and G says that's alright. C looks at G's blue sequined track suit.
G - Why are you looking at me that way?
C - You're all sparkly . . .
G smiles uncomfortably. C & M head home ahead of CK (&G?). C asks M what G is like and what he does. M says that G is Ujin's friend. C is concerned that G may be "exactly like Ujin". End of scene.

Hurray!!! All caught up!

For the Lee Pil-mo fans:

This is a link to a YouTube video of a recent interview of Lee Pil-mo. It is more about him than about this drama, but I recognized part of what he says as being lines from the drama (when he proposed to Yunhui by the church).

Well, Ujin and Teach are on their honeymoon and both happy as can be. There was some quiet timid moments from Teach the 'next morning' but Ujin was all smiles.

Dad sees the Dr who is worried the cancer may return so now dad is acting like she is going to die if she doesn't rest. I think something was lost in that Dr./dad conversation or the translation was different than what we got. Whatever, now dad is being overly protective and is frightened.

Hyejin .. is this the same woman from the beginning?

Re: K-Drama: 사랑을 믿어요 (My Love, My Family)

nchristi I agree with most of your criticisms from the previous page. That's one of the reasons I've found entertainment in the KiChang family antics, as a lot of the interesting moments of the show has either devolved, not evolved at a proper pacing or simply were written out per your criticisms. This show has always been such a mixed bag for me, a brilliant moment in the midst of many moments that feel a bit unsatisfying. With a lot of the plot points that I enjoyed ending before (like Soup Boy's saga) there wasn't much left in the way to be resolved for these last episodes.

I did like the last episodes previously that had a balance between KiChang's family antics, especially the 3 sons and the Ujin/Teach storyline, especially the repairing relationship between Ujin and his mom. Though I agree last weekend's episodes with all the yelling between KiChang and his wife and Ujin's parents were too much and a reversion of earlier episodes where most of us had to hit the mute button!

Last night's episode was ok for me, not much happened... but I did enjoy the Ujin and Teach get-away. Korea looked simply beautiful under those light blue sunny skies, as they were driving to their destination. I wish one day I could visit such places in Korea!

Re: K-Drama: 사랑을 믿어요 (My Love, My Family)

I think I am officially becoming a Grump. (Apologies to readers...) While the wedding was beautiful and enjoyable (last week), I thought the honeymoon scenes ... except for the romping on the beach... were the dumbest I've ever seen. The morning after... OMG. And I thought Yunhui was childish before! The way she pouted her lips and talked was worse than Rani in her meltdown moments. The milk mustache—a professional schoolteacher of her age is really going to drink a glass of milk that way?! I don't think so. Ujin acted like a normal person (or at least the way we would expect him to act), but Yunhui's behavior was completely unbelievable. Or, if she is really supposed to be that sort of child-adult, it was a big turnoff to me.

Then there was their warm, affectionate scene on their balcony. Ujin asks her what is the happiest part of their getting married? Yunhui's reply: 'The best part is that now I'm really a part of my Dad's family.' Huh? Ujin's answer to this question is that he's ecstatically happy in the thought of seeing Yunhui grown old, white hair, grandchildren, etc. Maybe this question doesn't really translate easily into "American." His "growing old together" reply is something frequently repeated in K-drama. I have the feeling it is one of their cliché utterances, just as "I'll never forgive you!" is fraught with meaning within their society.

After the scene with Hwayeong and her housekeeper last night, I've changed my mind about Yunhui's future in that household. Looks like Hwayeong is going to be a rough taskmaster in "training" Yunhui in her chores and lifestyle, telling the housekeeper not to interfere or help Yunhui. Another big battle coming up for Ujin caught between his mother and protecting his bride. Will Hwayeong allow Yunhui to keep teaching at the school? I wonder if they will end up moving out? Ujin will probably want to, but Yunhui will want to stick it out and win over her MIL.

One thing about Mom's illness, surgery, and post-op. I'm impressed with the actress' ability to portray a sick person. She is doing this the most realistically I've seen in a K-drama. Excellent portrayal.

On to tonight...
