Re: J-Drama: 相棒 15 (Partners 15)

<EPISODE 1> (Part 1)

YAY! This calls for a celebration - Partners 15 is back and ready to go.

I got a very different feel from this premiere episode. Maybe it's because Ukyo starts off without a partner, since Kaburagi is technically in limbo and doesn't have an official position as of yet. I suspect he will end up in Special Missions, although we could be surprised and Kaburagi might be a "guest" like he was all of last season. For now, he's working for Miyako as an assistant in the PR department.

Speaking of Miyako, we have two characters who have returned from previous seasons and who may end up becoming full-time additions to the cast: Miyako herself, and Mr. Creepy Cyber Guy.

Miyako - Nakama Yukie has long been my favorite J-actress and I am always happy to see her back. It looks like she may be in more episodes this time around, which should be interesting. Looks like Miyako's significant other (the Russian spy) is out and about, and I have an ominous feeling that he may be trying to kidnap their daughter. Who knows. As for Miyako, I think she's playing games with Kaburagi - who seems to have the hots for her but who is playing it coy at the same time.

As for Mr. Creepy Cyber Guy, wow! Who knew that he would join the police force he hated so much. I thought it was odd that he was trying to be best friends with Ukyo and Kaburagi, but sure enough, he has ulterior motives. That strange voodoo-like ritual he did (by sticking pins in Ukyo and Kaburagi's eyes on their photos he has on the wall at his apartment) seems to prove it. Has Mr. Creepy Cyber Guy decided to get his revenge on the police by joining the force and trying to destroy them from within? Odd... I do hope Ukyo keeps him at an arm's length and sees him for who he really is.

Itami and Serizawa are still around, but no sight of Mr. Forensics Guy as of yet. Very little of Mr. Contact Lenses, too. I wonder if the show is thinking of going in a new direction with more controversial characters (Miyako and Mr. Creepy Cyber guy). Who knows.

The 'cursed to death' subplot is an interesting one to choose for the first episode. It is certainly going to be hard for Ukyo to prove. I suspect there is more to the deaths than supernatural activity. We shall see.

Part 2 of Episode 1 airs next Sunday!

For the first time in a long time, I forgot to look and note who directed the episode. It does have a different feel than previous seasons and so much going on with Miyako and "creepy guy."

Who was the guy watching Miyako and Kaburagi having dinner (pizza and wine)?

I'm glad to see some things don't change. The 2 lieutenants to Chief Kakuta still look through the window to see what Ukyo is up to.

Yes, I hope that never changes, Dunedan! The two nosy guys peeping through the window has been a running gag since Season 1, Episode 1.

I'm not sure who the man spying on Kaburagi/Miyako is. He may be connected to Miyako, since I think we saw him after that scene where she called home to check on her daughter.

The director is usually revealed during the ending credits, so we haven't found out who yet. We'll find out for sure at the end of either Part 2 or Part 3, depending how many parts they split this episode into.

Re: J-Drama: 相棒 15 (Partners 15)

<EPISODE 1> (Part 2)

Finally had a chance to watch Part 2! This is turning out to be quite an interesting case, although what was introduced as being a "supernatural" sort of mystery has now turned into the usual murder case, albeit a complicated one with lots of potential suspects.

At this point, the most suspicious people are the grandmother and the childhood friend of the young woman who believes she has supernatural powers. However, by the end of the episode, it appeared that the young woman herself murdered the victim, but was somehow under the impression that she cursed him to death. I'm not sure... all 3 of them are suspicious and I believe they are all somehow involved, but we need Ukyo to give us the final 'results' at the end of Part 3 for this all to make sense.

For a while, I thought the young woman's childhood friend was committing the murder and making his friend think that she had supernatural powers, but it instead appears that he deliberately got caught in order to hide the fact that she (or her grandmother?) was the real culprit. Who knows.

I noticed this in Part 1 but forgot to make a note of it until I saw it again in Part 2. Wasn't Kaburagi hilarious when he got scared after hearing the grandmother make her comment about killing countless people throughout her life? He was generally creeped out!

Mr. Creepy Cyber Guy is definitely up to no good. We didn't see much of him in Part 2, but something is definitely fishy. He is trying to get too involved, too fast.

Lots of Itami and Serizawa in this episode, who are being more catty than usual. However, I enjoy seeing them, especially because they always end up coming through and helping Special Missions out - like they did with the Forensics.

Speaking of Forensics, isn't it odd that we haven't seen Forensics Guy yet? I thought he would pop up by now. Maybe the writers are seriously considering a format change and getting rid of (or reducing the screen time of) old characters. Hmm.

The scene where Ukyo was gazing at the shoes was hilarious. It was as if he had stumbled upon a gold mine - which he kind of did considering it was a big clue in solving the case.

Part 3, the conclusion, airs tonight. Hopefully all will be resolved!

Re: J-Drama: 相棒 15 (Partners 15)

<EPISODE 1> (Part 3)

I was ready for this case to be concluded, but I never expected it to end this way - with the young woman's suicide. Sure enough, she was responsible for the murders, and had been tricked by her friend and grandmother to believe that she had supernatural powers. She had tried to kill herself as a teenager when she thought she had killed the classmate who was bullying her. Now, again, she attempted suicide upon discovering that she did not have supernatural powers and actually committed murder. This time, she was successful. It was the guilt catching up to her.

Did anyone catch Ukyo's reaction when he saw the young woman's lifeless body? We never see him react so strongly to anything - especially a physical reaction. Was it his almost robotic sense of justice expressing anger at the fact that she could not be tried and sentenced for her crimes? Or, was it a temporary sense of guilt at essentially leading a woman with a mental illness to her suicide? She was suffering from a mental problem - despite orchestrating a murder, she still believed she put a curse on her victims - and perhaps Ukyo could have dealt with it differently. I don't know if that frustration was guilt or anger at the fact that she didn't survive and atone for her crime.

Will the grandmother and the young woman's friend have to serve sentences now? She was arrested for trespassing and he for lying about a crime/impeding the investigation, but I can't expect them to be put away for a long time.

Kaburagi is an official employee of Special Missions for the first time! What a very skilled way of arranging his transfer - although not a very kosher method (blackmail). Spying on Miyako and taking a picture of her daughter before threatening to "investigate" her left Miyako with no choice but to beg for Kaburagi's transfer to Special Missions.

My only question is whether Kaburagi took the pictures himself, or if he had that man who kept spying on Miyako and skulking around the police department take the pictures on his behalf. If so, I wonder what relation (if any) Kaburagi has with this mysterious and sinister-looking man.

What was up with that last scene of somebody burying dead bodies? I have a feeling it might have been Creepy Cyber Guy... he is certainly suspicious and I don't know what he is planning (or has already planned) with Ukyo and Kaburagi.

This was a good season premiere, although there have been better ones. I guess they needed to set up Kaburagi becoming a permanent member of Special Missions, which ended up taking place. However, it feels very different from previous seasons - no Forensics Guy, very little of Mr. Contact Lenses. The only people who seem to be around more than usual is Itami and Serizawa, which is fine by me!

I'll watch Episode 2 next.

Re: J-Drama: 相棒 15 (Partners 15)

<EPISODE 2>

I'm finally caught up with what I missed! Is anyone watching this current episode?

This was a perfect episode in getting Ukyo and Kaburagi on the right track to work together as partners for the first time after Kaburagi became an official member of Special Missions. The blend of coffee beans (Kaburagi's favorite pastime) with black tea leaves (Ukyo's long-time favorite beverage) in the cigar was wonderful symbolism, wasn't it? These two flavors fused together to make the perfect cigar, and Kaburagi's unique personality mixes well with Ukyo's in order to create what may be the best partnership yet.

I must say that Kaburagi is my favorite partner yet - after Kame, of course. He has Kame's sense of humor, the ever so slight (yet playful) arrogance of Kanbe, and the tough guy exterior of Kaito all in one. He also seems genuinely happy to be part of Special Missions, which has taken everyone by surprise - especially Ukyo!

The scene where he and Ukyo were creating the cigar blend was my favorite. Kaburagi takes a break from his work to comment to Ukyo that this is the reason why he wanted to come to Special Missions - so he can work together with Ukyo on projects like this one. Ukyo doesn't respond, but he looks rather pleased by Kaburagi's very genuine comment. Wonderful bonding moment!

Every time we see Ukyo and Kaburagi rely on Creepy Cyber Guy for help, I feel like yelling into the TV and telling them to be careful. LOL! This guy is not to be trusted. That being said, this is the second episode of the season and we have yet to see a single appearance made by Forensics Guy. Did I miss something? Did he and Ukyo have a falling out in Season 14? It is almost as if he has been replaced by Cyber Guy when it comes to fulfilling the role of a secret helper from another unit assisting with the investigation.

I just hope this is addressed at some point - I would hope they wouldn't quietly write out Forensics Guy after all these years. Then again, the writers of Partners always give characters a proper goodbye before writing them out, so maybe we'll find out at some point. I seem to remember he and Ukyo didn't get along as much in the previous season, with Forensics Guy commenting on a couple of instances how he felt used by Special Missions as a sort of errand boy. I may be wrong, however. I hope we find out soon!

What will the man and woman be tried for? Kaburagi mentioned they'll be taken in on murder charges, but I don't recall the woman being involved. The cigarettes, cyanide, and act of giving the cigarette to her abusive stepfather were all done by the men. She might be arrested as an accomplice or being privy to the murder, but I don't think she's guilty of murder itself. Hmm.

Great episode! Episode 3 airs tonight.

Re: J-Drama: 相棒 15 (Partners 15)

<EPISODE 3>

This was probably my favorite episode of the season so far, in terms of keeping my interest throughout the case. I genuinely had no idea that the culprit ended up being who it was. I could have sworn that the man who was given six months to live had killed the elderly man, although I had no idea what his motives could have been. After all, why would he seek revenge on behalf of a man he had just murdered?

Still, though, he was quite an entertaining fellow to follow - and I could see why Ukyo took such an interest in investigating him. It was a classic Partners narrative - full of yakuza, tattoos, and host clubs. I would have been just as suspicious of the guy if I were Ukyo - I mean, who would commission a huge tattoo on one's back in just a few days!? All were good clues and contributed to the investigation.

The case made perfect sense to me, although it was a bit disappointing to feel bad for any one single person in the case. Though the father didn't stay alive long enough to see it, I was glad that the man who was responsible for the deaths of both he and his daughter was apprehended at the end - partly as a result of the man who was searching for something to do while he waited the six months to 1 year he had been given to live.

How ironic, though, that he was told by the doctor at the end of the episode that his numbers had gotten better!? Sometimes, regaining the will to live can change one's health around, and I guess that's what happened to the man. He was so sick and tired of his mundane existence that he thought he would finally have a chance to do something "exciting" before his death. Now that he finally let his hair down, so to speak, he might be on the path to beating his cancer.

By the way, did it look like he was behind bars during that last scene when he was having the consultation with the doctor? It would make sense, since he essentially took a man hostage regardless of his motivations for doing so. Knowing Ukyo's tendency to blindly follow the law without taking other factors into consideration, it would make sense that he would nab the man on that charge alone.

This is the third episode in a row where Mr. Creepy Cyber Guy has made an appearance, and from the looks of the previews, he's back next time, too. I guess the writers have replaced Mr. Forensics Guy with him as a full-time character. Am I forgetting something, or has Mr. Forensics Guy simply been written out!?

It was also a bit bizarre seeing Kaburagi with Itami and Serizawa at the beginning of the episode. Why would he feel compelled to ditch Ukyo simply for the reason that he wanted to see how working with Itami was? It was almost as if Kaburagi was purposefully trying to stir the pot with Ukyo for no good reason.

Excellent episode. Episode 4 airs tomorrow!

<EPISODE 4>

Is anyone else watching this current season? I know many members were impatiently and enthusiastically awaiting the return of Partners, so now that it is finally back, it would be nice if you could post your comments! emoticon

Very interesting episode. I didn't know where they were going with it at first, but it was quite the mix of a fraud case and murder cases. The murderer was quite the creepy one, with serious mental issues. He claimed that the woman he murdered "let her in", but we saw that he pretty much followed her into her apartment to confess his love to her - even though they had never met or spoken before. Wow. He needs to be put away - he clearly has no remorse for what he has done and would probably do it again.

The fraudster team (uncle and niece) were not exactly the most morally upright people in the world, but at the same time, they didn't seem evil and were just after money. I don't think they were targeting the weak and the elderly. If anything, the uncle had a soft spot for the elderly, especially since we saw him nab the snatcher and get the purse back for the elderly woman who had her purse snatched from her.

The Yamagata region is where Oshin took place, and the dialect that was being spoken is the same dialect spoken by characters in Oshin. This might have been a little tribute to the famous drama that is almost 40 years old now! I would love to do an Oshin rewatch.

Kaburagi's womanizing personality was the focal point of this episode, although as we saw, he wasn't stupid and didn't fall for the fraudster woman's advances. It is funny how they sent Mr. Cyber Guy to do some undercover investigating without even telling him what he was doing!

It was also entertaining that Ukyo could care less about Kaburagi's dates and debacles. LOL!

What does everyone else think about the absence of Forensics Guy? Four episodes in and not even one mention of him.

Episode 5 airs next week!
