Re: NOTICE: UTB 18.2 TO GO OFF THE AIR EFFECTIVE 9/3/16

This whole UTB/KSCI situation is curious. I tried researching KSCI/UTB and found next to nothing, except this LATimes article from a couple years ago on the FCC wanting to buyout small TV broadcasters to free up mobile spectrum. (KSCI is mentioned in this article.)

Trying to find information from other sources, such as ESP Entertainment Group (which seems to own UTB), doesn't produce results, either.

But, obviously, some sort of major reorganization is going on. While TitanTV program listings on the internet still show the LA18.x programming, the OTA (over the air) tv guide has ceased being updated. OTA currently lists only the generic subject matter, such as "LA 18," "UTB Japanese," "MBC Korean," and so forth.

Maybe one of our members is more an insider to the TV station goings on and can give us a little update—if anything is known about what's happening at LA18 (KSCI). Otherwise, we'll just have to wait for everything to get established and, after the dust settles, see what we're left with.

Re:

I and my partner both love Partners. Sugishita is like a member of my family. Not having access to Partners is like telling me a relative is going to move far away and there is no way to communicate.

I am actually starting to have another concern. I have noticed in the last couple days that _none_ of the 18 subchannels is showing the on-air listings. I mean the listings I can access through the remote control. Instead of giving the name and description of whatever program is on, it just says the name of the channel. I wonder if something is happening with all the subchannels. I also watch some of the Korean dramas on 18-3 and 18-10.

If there is any way to find out what may be happening with the other subchannels, please let us know. I looked on the Korean forum and did not see any thread about anything happening that might indicate a change in their programming.

I may take a look at the Partners thread. Usually, I only go to the program threads if I have missed an episode or am seeking information. Thanks for inviting me to join the discussion.

Yeah, I just saw that nchristi has voiced my concern about all the programming on the KSCI subchannels.

Re:

I've been looking around on some LA area broadcasting boards. But come up with nothing. I even checked reddit.

I noticed this on the LA18 KSCI website about the new SBS Channel.
"LA18 introduces a new addition to its main channel line up to meet viewer demand for more Korean content: a digital sub-channel broadcasting only the best of SBS programming."

The one thing I'm very curious about it what will replace the 18.2 subchannel if anything? Also I was watching KSCI on Sunday at 6:30PM Sunday just to see what is on currently. It's just infomercials for now.

The new subchannel is 18-10, SBS programs. I've been watching it for a few weeks, but not sure when it started. It does not reassure me that something is not going to happen to all the subchannels.

Re: NOTICE: UTB 18.2 TO GO OFF THE AIR EFFECTIVE 9/3/16

I would tend to think that nothing is going to happen with the other KSCI sub-channels, although it is really a baseless hunch on my part and this recent revelation about the program schedules disappearing from the OTA schedules is concerning, as well.

All of the other KSCI subchannels are available via Time Warner Cable, and presumabely other cable/satellite providers as well. UTB was the only one who never broke a deal with Time Warner and other cable/satellite providers, with the notable exception of Cox Cable (albeit, only in the South Bay and Orange County areas). So, if the other subchannels were going away, I suspect we would have heard about it by now.

Since no other information is available, perhaps this issue is unique to UTB. I figured something was up when they started getting rid of all their NHK World programming. It must have been expensive to buy the rights to broadcast all that exclusive programming (and lots of it, too) from NHK. Also, buying the rights to primetime dramas must have been pricey. I suspect that UTB simply didn't have the numbers and ratings to justify a 24-hour channel. What I'm curious about is what role, if any, UTB had in all this?

Regarding Partners, as I mentioned, Season 15 isn't even out yet in Japan, and if even if 18.2 wasn't going away, it was going to be at least 1 year before we saw it here, anyway. Hopefully by then, UTB will be able to work something out (maybe they can afford to buy another hour of programming on 18.1?) and we'll see Season 15 aired in some capacity.

Re: NOTICE: UTB 18.2 TO GO OFF THE AIR EFFECTIVE 9/3/16

SBS just launched this 24 hours subchannel 18.10 on July 4, 2016. The schedule has a lot of korean dramas with English sub. I don't think SBS will fold this yet.

I agree that the problem may be that UTB was only attracting a small yet devoted viewership that was not large enough to sell ad time or attract sponsors.

Plus I remember something somebody told me once during a job interview back in 2011 that the Japanese population in southern California is all spread out, and that it is not as big as the Korean or Chinese population.

Re:

I really am shocked and disappointed about the end of UTB Hollywood as a station owner - there is an unfortunate history that when UTB reduces itself a mere 1.5 hours of programming, it will go the way of magicbell.tv

Where I can I go now? I really enjoyed the broadcasts of Case Closed and idol music videos but what I will miss the most are the Sunday Japanese Dramas.
