Re: Missed the 1st episode but watched the 2nd. So, what the heck... is this baby the gamblers or the King's? I'm sure that if he was born healthy during this time period, at 6 months, he couldn't be the King's. But the end of this episode left you thinking he possibly was.
Re: K-Drama: 대박 (The Royal Gambler / Jackpot) In the first episode, we are introduced to the young woman who becomes the concubine to King Sookjeon. She is married to the hopeless gambler, Baek Man-Geum (in the light blue outfit). She spends her life trying to eke out a living for them both, while gambler husband keeps finding and stealing what precious little money she has hidden for their survival. Though a chronically addicted gambler who will do anything to fund his next bet, Baek Man-Geum is basically a nice, kind guy who seems to love his wife—he just can't stop destroying himself and his wife. The husband's lineage is aristocratic but he has become a bottom feeder in the aristocratic hierarchy.
Along comes Lee In-Jwa, evil master manipulator/villain (played by Jeon Kwang-Leol). He is without a conscience and uses anybody and everybody to accomplish his dastardly deeds, regardless of how many innocent people he hurts and/or ruins. Lee In-Jwa has the ultimate goal of taking power over the country.
Lee In-Jwa spots the wife and sees a use for the beautiful, innocent young woman who is living a miserable life with her gambler husband. In-Jwa manipulates her into a situation where she becomes beholden to him for money — money that she can't pay back because hubby has stolen it again, of course. Anyway In-Jwa's plan is to make the king notice the gambler's wife and to bring her into the inner-palace as a wife/concubine.
This is accomplished. One little problem, however. She is married to the gambler! King Sookjong then devises a scheme to get his girl legally. He entices the husband into a big gambling match, gets him drunk and ultimately the husband puts up his wife as collateral for the bet. He loses and his wife goes to the King (who is disguised as a rich merchant of some sort).
Six months later in the palace, the wife gives birth to a healthy son. The powers in the shadows have to get rid of this baby, because there is no way the King can be the baby's bio-father. So, the baby is taken from its mother and given to Baek Man-Geum (Gambler). He is delighted and overjoyed but then.... Stay tuned!
Re: Thanks for the fill-in on what I missed. I did see the wife go to the King but was puzzled by her giving birth to a healthy son 6 months after. That would mean her gambling husband was the father. But I'm thinking...maybe not. So kinda confused.
I don't understand how evil master benefitted by the girl going to the King.
Re: K-Drama: 대박 (The Royal Gambler / Jackpot) Since she is beholden to and controlled by In-Jwa (Evil Master), the girl becomes a well-placed spy and manipulator for him within the deepest parts of the castle. Who knows, maybe even In-Jwa would have her poison or otherwise thwart the king's life and reign? At any rate, I'm sure there's a lot of intrigue to come!
Re: K-Drama: 대박 (The Royal Gambler / Jackpot) Well, I don't know what to think about the first baby now! Maybe you're right, Nelli. Last night's episode sure sounded like the king was the bio-father. What threw me off was how could a six-month old premature baby survive back at that time? The only thing I can think of is that they counted the pregnancy time different back then. Don't the ancient Chinese consider a baby 1-year old at its birth?
Oh well. K-drama time and reality, I guess.
Now that we've skipped 20 years, the questionable baby is now grown up. On with the show!
