Re:

Hey guys! I have been able to watch a couple of these episodes online in order to catch up (not going ahead, no worries!).

To get to Hiroshi's point about Akira becoming a darker figure, remember back in season 1 where the cliffhanger about the Doctor X identity happened? Akira has always been such a mysterious figure to me. Season 1 ended with the possibility that Doctor X may be Akira. Remember that he lost his medical license for mysterious reasons and he has medical knowledge.

A common trend among J-Dramas is that they make it more anime-like, with the cute, exaggerated emotions. A bit weird imo, but oh well.

What I like the most about Michiko is her IDGAF attitude. She even had sushi delivery to the hospital! I really like how the sushi chef and that tofu shop owner from season 1 bring out Michiko's softer side and show her drive into saving lives.

Btw, I should explain myself for my absence. These past few months, UTB hasn't been airing dramas that have caught my attention. It feels like ever since shows like Oshin, Doctor X 2, and Woman ended (good times ^_^), UTB stopped airing dramas as much as they used to and when they did, the dramas didn't interest me. I've suggested a couple of dramas to them, so I hope they'll air them!

Re: J-Drama: ドクターX 3 (Doctor X 3)

Great to see you back, Yinyangyo! I was wondering what happened to you after Oshin ended. It is great to have you back with us, and looking forward to reading your comments about this drama and others, too!

Very good point about Akira. I feel like they sort of abandoned the "Who is Doctor X?" plot after the end of Season 1. It would be interesting to see it get resolved this season. I'm still very curious about whether or not Michiko knows exactly how much money Akira is making off of her. I think she knows that he gets a fat check from the hospital every time she operates, but I don't think she has any idea just how much money Akira makes off of her. Hmm.

The sushi scene was funny, indeed. The facial expressions of the other doctors when they realized Michiko had ordered such extravagant food was hilarious. LOL!

<EPISODE 4>

I found this episode very interesting, especially for the usual exaggeration of the characters that makes it a bit unnatural to watch. That scene with Hara having a practical nervous breakdown at the end was disturbing. When Michiko came in the room, I thought she had brought him a tranquilizer or sedative to calm him down. LOL!

What a surprise to see Dr. Hara back. He was one of my favorites from the first season, and I really enjoyed his friendship with Kaji. Sad to see that the friendship has pretty much disintegrated. Hara is now in Russia and has become pompous and snobby. Kaji has no problem gossiping with Ebina about his ex-friend and puts him down every chance he gets. I really don't like this new Kaji at all. Ever since he became friends with Ebina, it seems like the only positive traits of his personality all but disappeared.

Tendo really means business. I have no doubt that this man is one of the most vindictive characters we have seen in this drama. He uses and abuses people based on his goals and plans for the hospital. He hired Hara to teach the journalist a lesson, literally teased the journalist's voice and ability to speak in front of his very eyes after the surgery, and then proceeded to have Hara take the fall and destroy his career. I can't say I feel sorry for Hara. After all, he wanted the fame and the recognition, but it was a bit awkward watching him play right into Tendo's hands.

Still, though, I was quite certain watching Tendo in the beginning of the episode getting attacked by the journalist that Tendo wasn't going to let him get away with it. He was going to put the journalist through a life-threatening surgery, and risk losing the man's voice so that the journalist would be forced to take back his negative comments about the hospital on national TV. That is exactly what happened.

I get the feeling that Daimon is keeping her distance from Tendo. Good for her. He is not to be trusted and if she ever gets under his skin, he will fight back and fight back dirty.

I am so puzzled about Akira and Michiko's relationship. It seems she has no idea about the money he is making from her surgeries. When he told the opera singer he would pay all the medical expenses, he refused to tell Michiko about it. After all, if he did, she would know that he had access to an exorbitant amount of money - all made as a result of her surgeries. All he does tell her is that she has a lot of debt he is helping her with and that she "needs to work hard."

Who knows. It's one big mystery and I don't know how happy Michiko will be if/when she finds out the truth.

Episode 5 airs next week!

Re: J-Drama: ドクターX 3 (Doctor X 3)

<EPISODE 5>

Another one bites the dust! Now, Dr. D from the West has been fired. Good riddance. Although, this show feels like one of those competition-based reality shows where one player gets eliminated every week. Who will be fired in the next episode? LOL!

I have to say, I'm not enjoying this season much at all. This episode was a bit lackluster with the constant bickering between East and West. When will it all end? Each episode has been a repeat of the same formula - East and West go at it, Michiko saves the day when both factions are so busy fighting they forget to save the patient, one of the doctors gets fired by Tendo, and Akira delivers Tendo a melon. It seems to lack the more detailed and intricate storylines of Seasons 1 and 2, where I remember we were all on the edge of our seats waiting to see what happened next.

Plus, I find all of the doctors extremely unlikeable. They put their silly rivalry over everything else - including the life of the patient. I'm glad Tendo fired Dr. D for hiding the patient's serious condition so he could get rid of his rival Dr. Endo, all while risking the life of his patient. Unfortunately, Tendo seems just as corrupt and power-hungry as the rest of them. I've believed since the beginning that he will eliminate Michiko in no time should she get in his way.

The character development is so off skelter, too. Doctors Kaji and Hara didn't even talk to each other in the previous episodes. I thought their friendship from Season 1 was over. Now they have suddenly become best friends again. Where in the world did that come from?

I hope Hiruma comes back to save this season. He was actually interesting and added that sense of suspense to the storyline that is missing from this season. It would be nice to see Prof. Racehorse come back, too! She made things fun. This season they've replaced her character with the Nurse Manager, but she doesn't really do anything other than give Michiko dirty looks which really takes the story nowhere. I am left wondering what her role in all this even is.

The only part of the story I am interested in is Akira and whether he is pocketing all the money he earns from Michiko. He made a comment in this episode that Michiko hasn't been bringing any money to him lately... which we know is a lie. Didn't he just charge 30 million yen for the last surgery? Looks like Akira may be exposed sooner than later...

Episode 6 airs next week.

Couldn't agree more, Hiroshi

Hospital politics makes for strange bedfellows. emoticon

The head nurse gives me the feeling that she's changing a little bit. She's seeing more and more of the monkey business going on and what a great surgeon Michiko really is. Maybe she will end up being on Michiko's side?

The Dr. Kendo actor, Kitaoji Kinya, is another of my favorite actors. I first saw him many years ago in the "Tojo Tokomune" Taiga. He is grand as a Samurai War Lord, not to mention the head of "The Family"(2007). As Dr. Kendo, he emits that same inscrutable, lordly demeanor. Yet, as himself, he has an entirely different aura. Such warm eyes.

Nchristi, I couldn't agree more about Kitaoji Kinya, the Dr. Tendo actor. He's also playing Lord Mori in Burning Flower right now. I noticed he always gets typecast in these 'big boss' roles, and he does a great job in portraying the powerful yet fair authority figure in the drama. I think he was in Hanzawa Naoki, as well. I was surprised to see that picture of the actor you posted - he looks so nice and approachable! How different from the slightly intimidating roles he always gets cast in.

I wonder if the head nurse is going to play a major role later on. So far she has been rather quiet, but I wonder if she will take Michiko's side if she and Tendo ever go head to head... which may happen sooner rather than later.

So much toxicity in this drama, isn't there? I thought Seasons 1 and 2 were drama-filled, but this one takes the cake! LOL.

I'm waiting to see what's going on with Dr. Kendo—exactly what is his goal? I can't get an accurate feeling on his view of Michiko. He turns her down on some scheduled surgeries, yet I always get a slight feeling that he approves of Michiko in some way or other. He doesn't seem to criticize her as do the flunky doctors around him. And didn't he recently offer her a full-time position on staff?

Where did Dr. Kendo come from? Do you think he might have some hidden connection to Michiko or her father?

What really tickled my funny bone in this episode was seeing how the fired doctor walked down the hall. He reminded me of a giant frog walking on two legs!

Yes, that was hilarious! I actually laughed out loud when he tripped and fell—taking his box of belongings with him. Good riddance! LOL.

Dr. Tendo seems to be fascinated with Michiko. He always looks extremely pleased when he observes her surgeries, and he always keeps his mouth shut whenever the other doctors are attacking Michiko. Yep, he did offer her a full-time position in the first or second episode, but Michiko refused because she does not sign contracts. It'll be interesting to see if he knew Michiko's father in some way. Akira (who was a colleague of Michiko's father) doesn't seem to know him at all, so maybe Tendo knew Michiko's father from a long, long time ago. Perhaps they were childhood friends or something?

I actually like Tendo but I feel like there is something he is hiding. It'll be interesting to see how this concludes...

Re: J-Drama: ドクターX 3 (Doctor X 3)

<EPISODE 6>

Didn't care much for this episode. Everyone from the west is gone, so now I guess we're going to watch the remaining survivors go against each other until there is one victor or the whole hospital collapses. Plus, with the whole East v. West rivalry done, I guess the new storyline is going to be Tendo's secrets all getting revealed one by one. It looks like he is just as corrupt as the lot of them.

I've been afraid of Tendo turning on Michiko from the first episode. He seemed to like her very much at first, despite all the various warnings he received from different people. That being said, now that she inadvertently exposed his secret of being involved in taking bribes, she might become his next target. Nothing was revealed in this episode that could result in Kendo being arrested. However, I think that it will be the beginning to various other plots he is involved in being exposed to the mass media. I think Tendo has a lot of skeletons in his closet, and we know Michiko has now problem uncovering the truth. (She reminds me of Sugishita Ukyo in that regard.)

What was up with Tendo telling Akira to make sure he passes on his message to Michiko about how much he "appreciates her work." Was that a double entendre with a hint of sarcasm? He appreciates her surgical skills (he always said that from the beginning) but thanks to her skills, she ended up stepping on his toes and endangering his career?

I don't get what Michiko was supposed to do. Knowing the fact that the patient had a few months to live and that the surgery was extremely risky, Tendo might have wanted Michiko to "make a mistake" and let the patient die in the middle of surgery - thus sealing his lips forever. However, Tendo should have known better... after all, Michiko doesn't fail!

Ebina, Kaji, and the other doctors are running around like spineless fools. I think Season 2 was the best when it came to developing the rivalries and other relationships between the various doctors on staff.

I'm still eagerly awaiting the big reveal of who Akira really is. What is going on with all the money he makes off of Michiko and Ms. Anesthesiologist? Is he pocketing the money without passing on the cut Michiko deserves? Is he paying them anything? With all the whining Michiko does about money matters, you'd think she is receiving nothing or close to nothing - and Akira makes her believe she is raking in zero cash as a result of her surgeries, which we know is not true. Who is lying here!?

I certainly hope things pick up now for Season 3. It has been quite a mediocre season so far, unfortunately. On to Episode 7 next week!

Good question, Hiroshi. My first thought at watching that intense glaring scene was that Dr. Tendo must know more about Akira and his method of operation than we know. I suspect they have a past history with each other somewhere along the line. Or perhaps Kendo knows more about Akira than Akira does about Kendo. Should be interesting!
