Summary

Galileo is a based on a novel “Detective Galileo” by mystery writer Keigo Higashino. Manabu Yukawa, known as “Detective Galileo”, is a genius physicist and university associate professor. He is also known as a tall, handsome, brilliant but eccentric scientist who is interested in nothing but physics. He solves unusual mysteries with his new partner, Misa Kishitani, is a female rookie detective. The highlight of this drama is exquisite coworker-ship among Yukawa and Kishitani, also logical visual expression. —UTB

Detective Kaoru Utsumi (Kou Shibasaki) visits professor of physics Manabu Yukawa (Masaharu Fukuyama) and introduces new detective Misa Kishitani (Yuriko Yoshitaka) to him. This is done on orders from Detective Shunpei Kusanagi (Kazuki Kitamura) of The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department who graduated from same university as Manabu Yukawa.

Detective Kaoru keeps talking about a case in which a person fell to their death at the building of a religious group in Kamata. The victim fell from the the 5th floor of a building where the religious group "Kuai" resides. Apparently, the leader of the religious group (Takao Osawa) sent energy to the victim and he fell. Detective Kaoru shows pictures taken by magazine photographer of the incident. The pictures show that the group's leader did not touch the victim, but the victim's eyes became hazy. Manabu Yukawa becomes interested in the case and believes the incident can be proven scientifically. —AsianWiki

Utsumi Kaoru visits Yukawa Manabu to introduce him to Kishitani Misa, a rookie detective and Teito University graduate who joined the police force last year. Kaoru begins to talk about a case that occured at a Kamata multi-tenant building five years ago. It was a case in which the follower of a shady new cult plunged to his death from the fifth floor of the building which had become a branch of the church. However, the cult’s founder Renzaki Shiko said the cause of the death was due to his communication of this follower’s feelings in a seance. The police had to release Renzaki due to the lack of evidence. Kaoru shows Yukawa a series of continuous shots that a magazine’s photographer took on the night of the incident until the follower fell. She tells him that Renzaki did not lay a finger on the follower and that the eyeballs of the deceased was clouded. Learning that Renzaki is still conducting seances, Yukawa shows a strong interest in the possibility of scientifically verifying phenomena which has a high likelihood of being reproduced. The proud and confident Misa is bewildered by Yukawa’s lack of interest in the background of the case, but visits the cult’s base with him. It is a community deep in the mountains. Renzaki and his followers are living a life of self-sufficiency here. Misa asks Renzaki to let her experience a seance but... —DramaWiki

Re: J-Drama: ガリレオ 2 (Galileo 2)

<EPISODE 1> (Part 1)

This one reminds me so much of Trick... the only difference is that the main female protagonist is a police officer instead of a magician. In both dramas, the sidekick is an eccentric physics professor! The premise of both dramas is also almost the same - dealing with scientific, 'logical' explanations to seemingly unexplainable phenomena.

It's an interesting premise, and I love how they got Osawa Takao to play the "villain" (although he doesn't seem so bad) for the series premiere. It's strange seeing him in this role, especially since we're watching him play Inosuke in the Taiga at the same time. He's an excellent actor, and I find his character to be the most interesting at the moment - despite the fact that he isn't even one of the regular cast.

As for the regular cast itself, I remember the actor who played "Galileo" from the Sakamota Ryoma Taiga a few years back. He is a good actor, but I'm not a big fan of his character so far. I know Galileo is supposed to be one of those scientist types who is obsessed with his own research and theories, but I don't find his character entertaining in the least. (It's a stark contrast to Abe Hiroshi in Trick, who combined his scientific knowledge with an awfully quirky personality. LOL!) Maybe his character will change, but I hope we don't have to watch Galileo acting like this for 10 or 11 more episodes.

As for the female lead, I can't remember where we have seen her before. I seem to recall seeing her in Love Shuffle? I could be wrong. I find her slightly more interesting than Galileo, but I don't like the way she treats the poor physics assistant.

I'll keep watching for now. The premise is very interesting, so I'll stick around for that aspect of it, at least. If they change the way the characters are portrayed, I'm in. Otherwise, it'll be a very long 10-11 episodes!

I vote for keeping Osawa Takao (Mr. Qigong Therapist) as a full-time character! LOL.

Part 2 of Episode 1 airs next week.

Re:

The first half of the first episode seemed to drag on without much happening. I think entirely too much time was spent on back and forth debate between the religious leader and the skeptics (police & the physics prof). I hope this isn't the pattern for the series. I want to see more of the physics prof observe details and use his knowledge to scientifically explain phenomena.

My guess is that someone is using a range of low-frequency sounds to cause the different feelings in people. I think the physics professor noticed in the photographer's photo that there was a crack in the window before the guy jumped through it. It's possible it may cause a feeling of euphoria to other people.

Re: J-Drama: ガリレオ 2 (Galileo 2)

<EPISODE 1> (Part 2)

I caught the 6:00a airing, but kept getting distracted by the purple line at the top of the screen. Did anyone else catch that? It looks like UTB's experimenting with a new widescreen format. I hope it's a fluke and they go back to what they had before soon... even if they don't, I hope they get rid of that annoying purple bar at the top of the screen. LOL!

There seems to be some background between the professor and Utsumi, the outgoing detective. That might explain the professor's contempt for the new detective who will be helping him on the cases. He was so rude, especially when he told her he has no interest in her or working with her on the cases. I wish she had some water on her so she could have thrown it in his face at that moment. What a pompous jerk. LOL! I realized this drama had a first season which was not aired on UTB, so perhaps Utsumi (the detective who left) was the professor's 'sidekick' from the first season.

Dunedan, I, too, hope we have more elaborate and complicated cases in future episodes. I'd like to see the professor's explanations for complicated phenomena. This one was solved rather quickly, and I thought the microwave was a complete (but somewhat simple) explanation after all that philosophical discussion from Part 1. When they kept talking about heat, I thought they might have the recipient of the sonen treatment sit on a heating pad of some sort, so I guess I was closer to the truth than I thought!

While the professor may have a point, I do believe there are some things which cannot be explained by science. Take the scene in the jail cell, for example. There was no microwave system in there. However, the man was able to make his fellow prisoner feel relaxed after just one 'hit' of the sonen. Perhaps the man does have some healing energy (which is not explainable by modern science). Not to say that he is a spiritualist, but perhaps he has lots of positive energy which he is able to share and impart onto others who are in a time of need.

It reminds me of a study I read where people have reported feeling a sense of euphoria (or at least elevated mood) after coming into physical contact (a hug) with people. I think it raises some of the body's 'feel-good' hormones. This could be something similar.

Plus, in addition to the microwave theory, I think many of the sonen recipients felt good because of a placebo effect. They expected to be 'cleansed', and so when they received they treatment, they felt good because they believed in it with their own heart. I think a combination of placebo and the microwave - along with the strength of this man's positive energy in wanting to help his followers - was why people felt better. I guess it was the wife who turned this into a more sinister operation.

Episode 2 airs next week. It reminds me a lot of Trick, so I hope they will make the episodes a bit more suspenseful and engaging like that one was.

Sorry Diane, I haven't been watching this one after Episode 1, so I'm not sure!
