Drama RED SORGHUM

I am finding this story hard to get into. It has always been more difficult for me to assimilate Mandarin. There are so many characters in this drama and I am quite bewildered. At first I thought it would be an historical but now it is showing people in early modern dress. Much rivalry and fighting but I can't tell why. ( My inability to pick up on the story.) I keep watching the Chinese dramas because they are so colourful and interesting most of the time even tho I lose the dialogue. I need a slight synopsis and then I can follow most of the plots.
I really enjoyed Sohng of the Desert once I had help with the plot. thanks for that by the way ....

Peggy, this drama is a TV remake of the 1987 movie directed by Zhang Yimou, which was based off of the novel written by Mo Yan.

A review/summary of the novel: http://uspandey.com/2013/02/12/red-sorghum-by-mo-yan/

Re:

creidesca,
thanks. that is so interesting because I remember that drama and thought it was wonderful. I could not really see any improvement this time around and did not recognize it being a remake at all. However I did keep on seeing in my mind the houses and lamps above the doors in the first drama. That was so well done.

Re:

Those terrible incidents must have really happened because even the mind of a vivid writer could not just imagine such atrocities. I do remember news films of the Rape of Nanking when I was young. It was truly a bad thing and not to be imagined. We never knew what was going on in Asia when I was studying history. We had enough stuff to remember with English history, and some of that was pretty brutal !
