The way it ended also could have given a perfect out for Mizutani Yutaka, if he didn't want to continue this series after 13 seasons.
Thankfully, there is a season 14...new partner to be portrayed by actor Takashi Sorimachi, starts in less than 2 wks in Japan.

Re: J-Drama: 相棒13 (Partners 13)

Takashi Sorimachi looks like a good choice as a partner for Ukyo. I've always liked this actor. He looks rather similar to the Kaito actor, so it probably won't be too much of a culture shock that Kaito is gone. I'm looking forward to this upcoming season!

<FINAL EPISODE> (#19, Part 3)

Welcome to CJKDramas, Suicinesol! Glad to have you on board. Hope you'll participate in some of the other drama discussions, as well.

Mile Irene, please feel free to post your comments anytime after the episode has aired! You don't have to wait for me to post. As you can see, several other members have already posted, so please feel free to share your thoughts with everyone, as well! emoticon

I feel the same way you did about this final episode, Nchristi. At the end, it almost felt like Ukyo was leaving the show after thirteen seasons. If the writers wanted to, they could have set that up as his final scene, with Ukyo being put on indefinite leave and going to another country, perhaps the UK as he usually goes to. Parts of it almost felt like a series finale! Even when Kame and Kanbe left, I never got the feeling of such a somber and melancholy finish.

That being said, Kaito and Ukyo left on very positive terms. I didn't feel like Ukyo was looking down on Kaito, or judging him because of the crime he had committed. Despite Ukyo's no tolerance perspective when it comes to "justice", and his stubborn refusal to even entertain the notion of letting a "criminal" get away with something, I have always gotten the feeling that Ukyo believes in the prison system as being a chance for the accused criminal to atone for his crimes and sins.

One example of this is how Ukyo has always treated Sachiko, Ms. Hana no Sato, with such respect and kindness. I have no doubt that he will do the same with Kaito once he leaves prison.

Kaito has grown and matured a lot since he met Ukyo. The fact that Kaito was able to have a civil conversation with K-Dad (after hardly being able to be in the same room with him when we first met the two of them) speaks wonders. Kaito has matured so much since we first met him in Hong Kong in Season 11. I think Ukyo and Kaito have both made a lasting impact on one another, and they both know it.

I am sad about Etsuko having to raise the child on her own, while she battles her illness. I hope she will make cameo appearances in Season 14. Finances probably won't be a problem, as K-Dad will probably provide for his grandchild generously. But still...

Speaking of K-Dad, his behavior at the end really disgusted me. To blame Ukyo for Kaito's crimes was quite a low blow. I can see why he would make such a statement, and it is certainly not easy to work with Ukyo. However, I don't know if K-Dad unknowingly made these accusations against Ukyo from a place of hurt, or if he did it in order to lower the responsibility he had in child-rearing (or lack of, rather).

It's going to be a long time before Season 14 airs! The show has yet to air in Japan, and so we might not see it here in the US until late 2016 or even early 2017 - if we are lucky. However, Takashi Sorimachi is an interesting choice to play alongside Ukyo. (Let's see if his name starts with K like all Ukyo's other partners... LOL).

Part of me was hoping that Nakama Yukie (Yashiro Miyako) was going to somehow end up as Ukyo's partner. She would be Ukyo's first female partner and it would be an interesting match, since she and Ukyo have equally secretive and enigmatic personalities. But I guess not! Takashi Sorimachi seems like he will be a combo of Kaito and Kanbe. That's my first impression so far.

I would normally be more excited for Doctor X 3 to start later this week, but after the way this season ended, somehow, I'm not ready!! We will miss you, Kaito. He really did grow on me.
