What is the deal with Daikichi? Every time Haru would try to leave he would prevent it. Then they were starting rumors about her staying there.

Is he the man who is like a train conductor? If so, I think he has a big crush on Haru! That's why he made those rumors up about Natsu in the first place—so Haru would worry and come back to the town.

Yes, if that's him, I think he has a big crush on Haru!

Speaking of Natsu (who is also the narrator) we saw her in another asadora a few years back, about a young woman marrying into a family who was running a traditional Japanese inn. I believe the Natsu actress played the heroine's MIL at that time. It's nice to see her in another asadora. (I couldn't recognize her without the help of DramaWiki, but now I see the resemblance!)
I remember that story. The young woman who married into the family was played by Minami Higa, who we just saw playing Aya in Marumo's Story.

Yep, that was her! She is an excellent actress.

Re: J-Drama: あまちゃん (Ama-chan)

<EPISODES 5 & 6>

OMG, I love this series so far! These last two episodes were great. Very positive and fun drama, with its fair share of emotional or contemplative moments.

It was nice to see Haru and Natsu finally communicate with one another, having an open mother and daughter talk. That's the most emotion we have seen out of either of them yet. I think the reason Haru is a bit annoyed with her daughter for "loving everything she hates" is because it is such a contrast to her adolescent life, back when she left home for Tokyo. Aki doesn't like the big and cold city life of Tokyo, and she has fallen in love with the cozy small town where her family hails from. Most of all, she loves diving—something which Haru couldn't stand as a child. It's like they have become polar opposites!

That being said, I'm relieved that Haru has enough sense to let her daughter spend the summer in the town, learning how to dive under the wing of her grandmother. Other mothers might have been more proud and refused to let their daughter choose the life that they had rejected before. However, Haru is a kind soul, and I'm glad she is letting Aki follow her dream. What's ironic is that Aki's determination to stay in the town and get to know her grandmother is doing a lot to improve Haru and Natsu's relationship, too. I mean, for them to have a civil conversation after decades of estrangement is a big first step!

I was afraid that Aki was jumping into this diving thing (no pun intended) a little too quickly, but it seems like there is something about it which she is instantly drawn and attracted to. From what we have seen, Aki was not a very happy child in Tokyo. It was even hinted that she was bullied. Perhaps the big city environment isn't for her. I suspect she'll be very happy living with her grandmother and the other townspeople here. There may be issues, but I don't think there will be anything that cannot be worked out.

Ironically, Haru doesn't seem too happy with her life in Tokyo, either, although she says she does. I wonder why she seems a bit unhappy with her marriage? However, at this stage in the game, she might be too proud to ever tell her mother or daughter that a small part of her regrets leaving for Tokyo, or at least wondering what her life would have turned out like had she become a diver. I do understand why Haru hates diving so much, though. Being scared that her mother would never come back up (at such a young age) would traumatize her, for sure.

Speaking of Haru, she is played by Kyoko Koizumi, who played the heroine in the drama Second to Last Love. So happy to see her here!

It was very sweet of Natsu to let Aki wear her mother's diving uniform. This way, she is symbolically giving Haru the opportunity to dive, as well, even though she never did. We'll see how this all transpires!

BTW, I have to say, even though this drama airs at 9:00p, I insist on catching the 6:00a encore in the mornings. It is an asadora (morning drama) after all! emoticon

Re:

I was wondering why hasn't there been any new ama divers since the last woman joined. Did they explain that in the show yet.

They mentioned that Haru was slated to spearhead the new generation of ama divers, but since she left for Tokyo, it all sort of fizzled out. Nobody from the new generation was really interested in joining the ama divers. That's why everyone is so excited to see Aki express such enthusiasm about becoming a diver.

Re: J-Drama: あまちゃん (Ama-chan)

I like this one, too. It has a substantial back story, gradually revealing the past.

It is a sad situation that so many small towns and villages in Japan (the US, too) are drying up and disappearing as the last of the elder generation dies off. Country life is not easy and can be extremely boring and burdensome to young people these days. So, they pack up and want to move to the big city for better jobs and more excitement.

Haru, especially, has my empathy. I can't even imagine being forced into something you actually hate and are afraid of, plus carry the incredible load of keeping the entire village alive, thus sustaining the lives of all the elderly citizens. I can't blame her one iota for jumping on that train and heading for Tokyo! She had a lot of inner fortitude to actually pack up and go! Nevertheless, having abandoned her family and village makes for a heavy conscience that can't easily be resolved. Then, to find the village still scheming to get her back and MAKE her become an ama diver was just too much. I couldn't believe that guy grabbed her luggage and forced her to stay in the village instead of going back home to Tokyo, that it had all been a ruse in the first place to get her to come back for the first time in 27 years.

Recently, there was a Korean documentary on this same subject. Korea also has divers who are elderly women, known as Haenyo. Most are in their mid-70s -80s eighties, and there is no younger generation interested in carrying on this tradition.

A very hard life. Most die while diving. They all go together as a group and they all leave at the same time as a group. They know someone has passed if she doesn't join the group as it gathers to leave. Then they will wait until the body surfaces or washes up on the shoreline.
