Re: J-Drama: Woman

Yes, if this one gets any darker or doesn't become at least a little more positive soon, I think I'm out. I feel so dark and negative after watching it...

Diane, I hadn't realized that! The half-sister is played by the same actress who is currently portraying ChaCha in Kanbe! She did look a little familiar, but I didn't remember where we had seen her.

I don't know about the negative comments about the show being so dark and morose, but it interests me because it is so honest and believable. Unfortunately for some, it is showing life as it is too honestly. There are so many who are in unfortunate situations and not too many people to assist them.

Glad that you're enjoying this one, Pali. As a production, it seems to be well thought out and the casting is excellent, as well, but I might sit this out just because I don't want to watch something so dark and real during the week.

Re: J-Drama: Woman

For a lot of people, life is very harsh and that is their reality day-after-day. If that is daily life, I can't blame people for not wanting to watch more of the same as "entertainment." For example, Shirley Temple was immensely popular for a very good reason—she was a relief to the devastatingly dark days of the Great Depression, providing relief and happiness to thousands of shattered, empty lives. Her situations were always terrible and cruel, but she was so cute and talented, possessing that positive, sunny disposition that brought everybody consolation and a tad of happiness and hope, that she served as a national treasure to the general population.

Personally, I haven't thought about this drama enough to dissect it. Perhaps it is the main actress that doesn't draw me in. I associate her with miserable characters, I think. This drama isn't interesting to me and I found that I prefer to watch other programming instead. At another time and place in my life, I might have found it comforting in a strange way. But here and now, "Woman" is just depressing and a downer. It has no value for me personally, just a negative so far. But, to each her/his own. I'm sure many people find it a compelling drama, while others do not.

Re: J-Drama: Woman

Very well said, Nchristi. I share the same feelings about this one, and I couldn't agree more about the main actress. The only other drama we've seen her in was about a young woman whose brother was a murderer. She ended up falling in love with a young man whose sister had been murdered by her brother many years before. It was a very dark drama, and though it was very well-done (from a production standpoint) I felt drained after watching it. I think Woman has a similar feel—I don't want to have that drained feeling after this one finishes, especially if they end up breaking each episode into 2 parts and it ends up airing for many weeks.

The only reason I would be tempted to continue watching is to see Yuko Tanaka, but I still think I'm going to sit this one out.

I actually have lost interest in the show. There seems to be very little positive in the main character to make it watchable.

Yes, I'm sitting out on this one, too. I always watch the commercial previews to see if it is getting any brighter, but it seems to be the same old thing week after week.

Re:

I watch it mainly because I like the kids, and the close relationship to their mother. There are a lot of disturbing aspects including a mentally sick half sister, and themes of sickness and death. Maybe I`m too optimistic, but I hope mutual family support will lead to some positive outcomes for everybody in the end.

If I ever were to tune into this one again, it would be to see Tanaka Yuko. She's an excellent actress, and I would like to see her in another role after Oshin. I hope UTB will air another drama starring Tanaka Yuko in the future.

Since UTB plans to air the Red & White Music Festival on Wednesday, December 31st (New Year's Eve) during Woman's time slot, I e-mailed them to see if they planned to air the episode at an earlier time. They mentioned that the episode of Woman on 12/31 will air at an earlier time—at 5:00p.

So, here is the schedule for the next few Wednesday nights!

12/24 (W) - Episode 10 - airs at regular time of 9:00p

12/31 (W) - Episode 11, Part 1 - AIRS AT 5:00p

1/7 (W) - Episode 11, Part 2 airs at regular time of 9:00p

1/14 (W) - New Wednesday drama begins (TBA) airs at regular time of 9:00p
