Re: J-Drama: ドクターX 1 (Doctor X 1)

<EPISODE 1> (Part 2)

Wow, I'm hooked! This is definitely more interesting than the other medical dramas I've seen, like Code Blue. There's something refreshing about seeing Daimon's rebellious nature, especially when juxtapositioned against those cold doctors who could care less about the patients and are obsessed with the power hierarchy in the hospital. Yonekura Ryoko is doing an excellent job in this drama.

Daimon has a little bit of Ukyo's personality, where she refuses to bow down to the establishment. I feel like both Ukyo and Daimon can get away with this due to their impeccable reputation and track record. The establishment wouldn't be as forgiving if Ukyo and Daimon weren't as skilled and talented as they are. That being said, they both have the support of powerful, shadowy higher-ups. Ukyo was supported by Onoda, while Daimon seems to have the provisional support of the new director. He will be an important ally for her, I suspect.

Speaking of which, I'm so glad Dr. Busujima nabbed the director position before the other greedy doctor who is having an affair with his secretary. I was almost getting sick to my stomach when he and his mistress were standing at the foot of the previous director's bed, grinning from ear to ear at the prospect of him becoming the new director. Well, so much for that plan! He's back to the drawing board and a subordinate position, waiting for yet another chance.

The mystery of the latex gloves was solved! I got a kick out of the scene when Daimon told the doctors to figure it out themselves, since they all held a medical license. Good line! LOL!

I was also laughing at Daimon's choice of lunch. Noodles and a cup of syrup? I guess she needed some energy after the long operation!

"Onoda" is Daimon's agent from the medical agency, and the new contract he drew up was hilarious. LOL! I was even more surprised that Director Busujima agreed to it. I suppose the set-up of the drama will be watching Daimon agree or not agree to certain tasks based on whether it applies to her magic contract. The best scene was when the doctor who was expecting to nab the director position expressed his shock at the contract. "Onoda", with a big grin, asked him to come join his agency if he liked the contract so much. LOL!

Excellent drama so far. It has a bit of a Partners feel to it (with the rebellious main character) so I think it'll be an interesting watch.

Can't wait for Episode 2 next week!

Some of these doctors are just plain stupid. Why didn't they screen the patient for any allergies, and why didn't they figure out that latex allergies can develop from chronic exposure to rubber? That doctor would have killed the patient.

Kaji, the guy who started the rumor that Michiko was going to sell the gloves on the black market, is probably angry that he didn't find out about it instead of her. Again, another case of sexism.

Wow, lady gaga must be really popular in Japan.

Yes, that guy was awfully upset about the gloves—a little too upset. I think he was just mad that somebody beat him to the secret chance to make some extra income. LOL! What a piece of work.

The contract was pretty cool. I remember in part 1, her first task was to put the patients records on the computer and her first response was "That doesn't require a medical license." So, the contract pretty much ensures that she does only medical procedures.

That agency is pretty much like a labor union with only Michiko as a member haha.

Sad that this drama only has eight episodes, it'll end in November. I hope that UTB will air season 2 emoticon

Since Partners 13 is still in post-production and hasn't aired in Japan yet, I suspect it will be a while before we see it over here. So, UTB has plenty of time to air Season 2—which I hope they will do!

What cracks me up is that the producers have invoked a modified The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly whistling theme to represent Michiko's merciless victories over the stodgy hospital hierarchy.

So far, my least favorite doctor is Kaji Hideki. He must be the most corrupt one there since his mind always—and immediately—goes to suspicion of wrongdoing. Running a very close second is Torii Takashi, the guy having the affair and who practically drooled over the prospect of becoming director himself. He was thwarted nicely. Kind of like an emotional Benihana treatment—with Dr. Torii as the beef!

Yes, I totally agree about Dr. Kaji. That actor really gets on my nerves. He seems to get typecast in these unlikeable roles, since I recall not liking his character in another drama we've seen him in. What a piece of work Dr. Kaji is. That's why I, too, think that he's covering up some kind of corruption. After all, why would he be so suspicious of wrongdoing if he isn't guilty of it himself?

I do love the fact that Dr. Michiko isn't scared of these annoying "doctors" (and I use that term loosely) and keeps on doing what she does best—practicing medicine in style!

<EPISODE 2>

This episode had me hooked! I have a feeling this is going to be a 'medical' version of Partners. Maybe that's why UTB decided to air it on Thursday nights in the asme time slot. It's really an excellent drama and far surpassed my expectations.

On to the characters...

Michiko - I get a kick out of everything she does! It is so funny how she could care less about the stuffy doctors and their protocol. It's quite nauseating to see all the kissing up that goes on in that hospital, and so I love how Michiko handles it—or doesn't handle it! LOL. What's so funny is that the doctors have realized by now that they cannot control Michiko and that nothing they say or do will scare her. Their threats of firing her all fall on deaf ears. Despite her talents, Michiko seems to be on the side of the 'weak.' At the end of the day, no matter what she said, she ended up giving priority to the non-VIP patient and didn't accept their money—knowing that they need it more than she does. However, she did end up getting quite a bit of cash from that mean publisher! Good for her! What I especially love about Michiko is that she doesn't seem obsessed with the notoriety or fame. All she wants is to finish her surgery and go dancing!

The anesthesiologist - She's another favorite character of mine. I realized that she is played by the same actress who played Mariko in Second to Last Love and Princess Noh in Kanbe. Glad to see her again in this one. I think she's an important ally Michiko will have. I love how Michiko threw out the other anesthesiologist without hesitation and requested for this one to come in, to help with the second surgery.

Michiko's "assistant" - This guy gets on my nerves a little bit. He runs around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to protest Michiko's actions or call her out on various things, but once he calms down, he realizes that Michiko was right after all. Calm down there! LOL. I find it hilarious how Michiko basically shuts him up by just ignoring him or pushing him aside. That being said, he doesn't seem vicious like the other doctors and he may prove to be an important ally to Michiko, as well—though he doesn't have any particular power.

Director Busujima - He doesn't seem particularly accepted by the staff in the hospital, since he came from the 'main' facility and defeated Dr. Torii in the race for the director position. I guess that's why he realized he could use Michiko as an important ally. Plus, he sees her talent as a surgeon, compared to the motley crew they have there.

As for that very motley crew... I could do without them. Dr. Kaji, the office manager, Dr. Torii, and the rest are all some of the most gossipy, critical, and small-minded people we've seen on dramas! At least with Partners, the other detectives all seemed to respect Ukyo's talent, and despite their gossiping, I think they all had his back when push came to shove. It doesn't seem to be the case here.

Dr. Kaji in particular is irritating. I'm sick of all his conspiracy talk, especially about how Michiko is only after the money. Wasn't he the one dropping hints that he'd like to do the VIP surgery? He changed his mind awfully fast after his indirect request was shot down. As for Dr. Torii, I'm glad he didn't get to keep the commission money—Michiko's manager was so smart in the way he handled that whole thing! I also got a kick out of his little dance after he walked out with the envelope in hand. I've missed the Onoda actor!

All in all, an excellent drama so far. UTB made a great choice! Episode 3 airs next week.

That patient who's the VIP is the example of why the customer is never always right. I'm sure Japanese patients wouldn't want to totally inconvenience the staff.

Yeah, Akira-san's visits would be a running gag especially when he skips to the exit. I always look forward to those scenes. It would be melon, takes money (or any other forms of payment), and he skips out emoticon

Despite Michiko's personality, she does have a heart. When she gave back the money, I was surprised to why she did that because it seems rude. Then I remember that the couple is going broke, so they needed the money.

Kaji and the hospital manager (the crazy lady with the curly hair) are the two I hate. They're so annoying...

Overall, I wonder about those people Michiko hangs out with at the house. The way they seem to be, they're borderlining Italian Mafia with Akira-San as the leader.

Re: J-Drama: ドクターX 1 (Doctor X 1)

Melons are very prized as presents in Japanese culture. As we saw in the drama, when Akira brought some to the hospital to hand out, people in Japan commonly give melons to other people as gifts. Often times, a "best by" date is stamped on the melon, telling customers when the optimal time to enjoy the melon is.

It is very fascinating to me how widespread it is for patients to give doctors money either before or after the operation, as a sort of "tip." Unlike the United States, tipping is not customary in Japan, so I find it interesting that even everyday patients (not just the wealthy) prepare some sort of payment to give to the surgeon and/or the hospital. What's entertaining is how the official position of the doctors is to reject the payment at least once, but then to eventually accept it—albeit grudgingly. LOL!

Michiko is very kind, indeed. I like that she doesn't flaunt her kindness or make sure others know what she is doing.

Great drama. Can't wait for next week!
