Summary
Taiga is a struggling second-generation actor who has developed a complex due to his father, a famous actor in his time. Most of the time, Taiga only gets to appear in variety shows. One day when his friend brings him out skydiving, a big wind drags him away from the dropping point and he gets stuck in a tree. A beautiful woman, Shiori (Takeuchi Yuko), rescues him. Shiori is a cheerful woman who laughs away all of her worries. She's exactly the opposite of Taiga... —UTB/DramaWiki

Taiga Kusunoki (Jun Matsumoto) is the son of well known actor Kotaro Kusunoki (Shiro Ito) and is also an actor himself. Unfortunately, Taiga's acting career is a few magnitudes lower than his ever popular father's career. His management company struggles to find work for Taiga, so Taiga usually spends his days with fellow second-generation actor Keita Ueno (Hideyuki Kasahara), who is also in a similar plight as Taiga. One day, the two friends go sky diving with Taiga losing losing control of his parachute. Taiga drifts away and eventually becomes stuck in a tree several miles away from his landing point. Then a woman named Shiori Kitamura (Yuko Takeuchi) passes by and helps free Taiga from the tree. It turns out Shiori is a huge fan of Taiga's father ... —AsianWiki

Re: Shiori

What a delightful surprise to see Takeuchi Yuko as Shiori! She was the main character in one of our favorite asadora "Asuka" (1999) as the title character. Her comic tea ceremony fiasco in one episode is unforgettable :-) BTW, it was our early introduction to Fujiki Naohito, before he became a favorite leading man of dorama ("Antique," "Control," Saigyo in "Kiyomori," "Slow Dance," and the disappointing "MikeNeko.") We're looking forward to this new Matsumoto Jun dorama (who first won our hearts in Gokusen).

I was unable to watch Episode 1, Part 1, on UTB and will have to view it online. If possible, could someone tell me what the final scene of UTB’s Wednesday night premiere was? That way, I’ll know when to stop watching and be on track with everyone else. Thanks!

Re: ending?

As we recall, we think it's at the terrace cafe when she gets a call, pays her half, and leaves.

<EPISODE 1> (Part 1)

It's a little too early to tell if this one will be any good, but I thought it was a good start. The premise was interesting enough to hold my attention through the first half, and I'm very happy with the cast! Lots of familiar faces, and some of my favorite actors.

The main character, Taiga - I'm not a big Matsumoto Jun fan, since I find that he gets typecast into these Boys Over Flowers-type "cool/rich" characters. This one is a little bit like that, but I think Taiga's character will be a lot more interesting to analyze, since he is constantly under the shadow of his father's career. He doesn't seem as full of himself as the character he played in Boys Over Flowers, though, so I think I will enjoy him here. He definitely seems like a likable and relatable character at first glance. I felt bad that he lost his skydiving license... wasn't it the company's fault for giving him faulty equipment!? LOL!

Then we have Takeuchi Yuko. She's another excellent actress, and it's been a while since we've seen her in a drama. Her character seems to be quirky and interesting all in one!

Taiga's parents are played by two of my favorite actors. Taiga's father, who plays the veteran actor, is played by a veteran actor himself! He's actually the same actor who played Oshin's father! He is one of my favorites and I hope we get to see a lot of him. Taiga's mother played Princess Atsu's lady-in-waiting, Ikushima, in Atsuhime. She was one of my all-time favorites in that drama, so I'm definitely happy we'll get to see her.

Taiga's brother - So glad we got to see Fujiki Naohito again! He was excellent playing Saigyo in Kiyomori.

The characters all seem nice and interesting to watch, and even though we just saw the first half, I thought they did a good job of setting everything up and enticing us to come back for more next week.

On to Part 2 of Episode 1!

<EPISODE 1> (Part 2)

I'm hooked already! This is a nice drama that is interesting and heartwarming all in one. Episode 1 did a good job of setting up the characters and the story, and I'm excited to find out what happens next.

I was sad to see Taiga's father pass away so soon and so suddenly. He looked so happy when he was talking to the doctor in the hospital that I was sure he was going to be just fine—considering there was talk of having him get discharged in a few days. However, in his letter to Shiori, he did mention that he hadn't been feeling very well lately, so that could have been what was wrong.

Taiga's father is played by one of my favorite actors (Oshin's father) so I'm sorry that we won't be seeing him anymore in this one. However, I'm sure there will be lots of flashbacks!

I'm curious to learn more about Shiori. She said she only worked in the canning business, but how did she get so close with Taiga's father and the man from the talent agency? Could she be a talent scout or acting coach in disguise? I guess we'll find out more about her later, including more details on the fact that she has a daughter. Is she married, to?

I don't buy Taiga's claim that he was pretending to cry at his father's grave. I think it was the real thing—he just wanted to get a compliment from Shiori. LOL!

On to Episode 2 next week!

Re: J-Drama: 夏の恋は虹色に輝く (Summer Romance Shines In Rainbow Colors)

<EPISODE 2>

Not too much to say about this drama. I'm enjoying it a lot, and I find it a pleasure to watch, but it seems like one of those straightforward shows that don't give us a lot of room for analysis or leave us with a lot of questions after watching. It's a fun way to spend the hour, but I don't find it as riveting as Job Hopper Buys a House, for instance. On the flip side, it's a positive and feel-good production with enough comedy and drama to balance each other out.

I think the main focus of the story is watching Taiga develop his acting skills, which will also allow him to grow and mature as a person. I can't imagine how much it bugs him to be constantly overwhelmed by his father's shadow, even after the father passed on. Taiga must be wondering what his life is worth, since all everyone seems to talk about is his father's acting and legacy. It's certainly very sad, but Taiga's difficult personality doesn't make matters any easier for him. I hope that meeting Shiori will help him mature and also land some acting gigs!

Another thing I thought of is that Taiga must have had quite a lonely childhood. People around him would either resent him or tease him for his father's movie star background, and those who were nice to him would probably only be in it to be a "movie star's son's friend." Taiga probably had to face a lot of betrayal and fake people over the years. At least he has that one friend who seems to be very loyal to Taiga. They are childhood friends, it seems.

Not sure what to think about Taiga's brother. He seems awfully full of himself, and from the way he talked to Taiga and his mother, I suspect he looks down on them. Didn't he mention wanting to become a politician in the previews? I guess life happened and he ended up becoming an elementary school teacher. Perhaps he resents Taiga for his life taking a direction other than the path he had wanted to take?

The Taiga/Brother/Shiori love triangle should be interesting... especially considering the fact that we have no idea who the father of Shiori's daughter is? They seem to be hinting to us that Taiga's father is the dad, but I don't know about that. Maybe they are just trying to fool us? In any event, that would be quite a plot twist!

We saw a human side to the child actress. I thought she was going to be mean to Shiori when she became the assistant, but she actually seemed to be interesting in cultivating a relationship with her.

Lots of characters, but we're still getting to know everybody right now. It'll take a few more episodes to get a better idea of where everyone is going in terms of the story lines.

Episode 3 airs next Wednesday!

Re: J-Drama: 夏の恋は虹色に輝く (Summer Romance Shines In Rainbow Colors)

<EPISODE 4>

I usually don't mind any of the commercials we've seen on UTB, but the JOBOT commercials they play at the beginning are really grating on my nerves. I don't think I would mind them so much normally, but they play them like 2-3 times back to back—and there are two of them! LOL!

I have to say that the reason I continue to watch this one is because of Takeuchi Yuko, playing Shiori. She is an excellent actress, and I think she does a great job in these types of roles where she portrays someone who is hiding some deep-rooted pain and emotions that she cannot disclose. I'm not sure if I would want to tune in every week if it wasn't for Takeuchi Yuko. I feel very sorry for Shiori, but I think that she is able to persevere because of her positive and optimistic outlook.

It seems like there may be some trouble between Shiori and her in-laws—the parents of her ex-husband who had been killed in an earthquake a few years prior. I wonder if that will play out on the show. I have a feeling that Shiori's in-laws may blame her for their son's death, as we've seen far too many times on these types of dramas. If so, Taiga may just have to step in and save the day!

Speaking of Taiga, I feel like I'm a bit biased against his character because I am not Matsumoto Jun's biggest fan. LOL! I do think he's a great actor, but I find that he gets typecast into these bratty, entitled roles for almost every drama he is in. At least, compared to some of the other dramas we've seen him in, Matsumoto Jun's Taiga character is starting to show a more tender, caring side. He's not very selfish and has been seen to drop everything if somebody needs his help—even if he complains about it. We're still early on in the show, so I have faith that Taiga will continue to mature and forget about his past insecurities.

Hmm, I can't tell who is more slimy—Taiga's brother or the successful actor who told Taiga and his friend about the gossip column. Hmm, I would have to go with Mr. Actor on this one. What a jerk! It seems like all he cares about is making Taiga and his friend feel less than. I suspect he has some insecurities about his career, as well, and the only way he can feel good about himself is by making others feel inferior to him. I can't stand him.

Poor Taiga - with his luck, that scene he worked so hard to get was cut out! Ugh.

As for Taiga's brother, I think he has good intentions, but that scene where he examined his co-worker's skirt and suddenly started to enjoy his conversation with her was indicative of what kind of person he really is. While Taiga became very stressed about being overshadowed by his father's career, I have a feeling that his brother dealt with that stress by womanizing. I hope Shiori steers clear of him.

Very sweet moment between Shiori and Taiga at the end. I wonder if this will be a turning point in their relationship?

Episode 5 airs next week!

Re: J-Drama: 夏の恋は虹色に輝く (Summer Romance Shines In Rainbow Colors)

<EPISODE 5>

Is anyone else watching this one? I don't know... I'm not not enjoying it, but something about it makes me feel a little hollow after watching. With the exception of Shiori (Takeuchi Yuko's character) I don't feel quite invested in any of the characters, especially Taiga.

One thing that I find more bearable about Taiga is that he has become very humble as of late, like when we saw him beg the agent for any job—whether it was as an extra or a small role. Matsumoto Jun always gets typecast into characters with arrogant, entitled personalities (and huge egos) so it was nice to see him in a different light for once. If Taiga gets his act together, perhaps he will get better results? It's all about how you present yourself and the attitude you have, and so far, Taiga's attitude had been pretty lousy. Now that he's changing his outlook on life, perhaps better things will happen.

Shiori - My take on her is that while she feels closer and closer to Taiga, she is trying to replace her feelings for him with memories of her late husband. For instance, when she felt the closest she had ever felt to Taiga after the evening at their family home, Shiori suddenly decided to take a trip to visit her in-laws with Umi. She knew that a possible way for her to forget (or at least try to forget) about Taiga was to put herself in an environment where she would be surrounded by people who were close to her late husband—his parents. However, I suspect that Shiori's feelings for Taiga are just too strong at this point.

I thought Shiori did a good job of basically telling Taiga's brother that though she appreciated his kindness, she saw him as Umi's teacher. It was a nice way to validate his feelings while firmly letting it be known that she was not interested. As for Taiga's brother, I think he took it harder than I expected. Did you see him crying in the living room? He always struck me as a bit of a playboy, so I was surprised to see him so sensitive about it.

Not really interested in the side story with Sakura, the child actress who is now developing feelings for Taiga. She seems awfully childish, immature, and entitled. Don't like Taiga's "rival" either.

I don't know, I don't really have strong feelings for this one either way. On to Episode 6!
