Re:

For the most part, viewers of LA-18 & ICN should be familiar with the leads of Beijing Youth.

Li Chen was previously in Beijing Love Story. Ren Zhong and He Gang were in Family, to the Nth Power, whereas Du Chun was on Fight and Love with a Terracotta Warrior. Ma Su (along with Ren Zhong) were in AA Zhi Sheng Huo. Zhang Li and Yao Di were in Secret Society of Men.

Oh, I remember Zhao Bao Gang now! He played the father (Third Father) in Family, to the Nth Power [besides being the drama's chief artistic producer]. He also was one of the directors for Secret Society of Men. Looking at his dramawiki page, he was the chief director for the biopic on Anita Mui, Mei Yan Fang Fei, too.

Re:

sscrla, if you watched the first episode, hope you don't mind answering some questions:

What was He Dong's reason to his fiance for not going through with the marriage license? Did he ask his now ex-fiance to come to the family reunion? And what did she say to his grandpa?

It looks like He Xi's father is afraid his son doesn't like women??

And about He Bei....what is up with his girlfriend? Why was she being harassed by those guys?

Thank you!

Re:

I took only one year of college Chinese and have continued my studies by watching dramas. The truth is that I miss a lot, but I learn by listening, watching, and having a dictionary at hand. Given that, and without going back and watching the episode again on line, this is what I understood.

That actually is the marriage: you register and get new identity cards (a married person has an identity card with a picture of the couple in it). He Dong didn't think he could handle the responsibility of marriage. Theirs would be a "naked marriage" (no house, no car), and he talked about what would they do if they had a child. The ex-fiance wanted to go to the family gathering because of the grandfather, but when the questions started, she couldn't keep lying so told the family that they weren't getting married. She also lied to her parents at first. She showed them the new identity card with the picture of the two of them, but her mother asked for some other proof (I am not sure what), and she couldn't produce it. [Note: I could be wrong about a lot of this. I got the last point just by watching what was happening on the screen.]

I saw another show this week where the question of "do you like boys" was raised by a father when his son couldn't produce a girl friend. That must be the question of the week! 8=)

I don't know why the gang was after He Bei's girlfriend, perhaps a business dispute. At least the gangs don't stab or shoot people, but having five or six people kick or beat someone who is already on the ground seems to be universal, US and China.

sscrla, well better than me! Since I watched several Chinese historical dramas dubbed into my language, a lot of the words are similar in pronunciation, so I use that as I follow along with the Chinese subs that appear on screen (traditional or simplified depending on the drama). That's how I began learning the bits of Chinese I do know.

Back to the drama, I also got the impression that He Dong's family thinks ex-fiance is the one who doesn't want the marriage, and not the other way around (haven't had the chance to watch EP 2 yet, but I'll do that later this weekend)? It didn't look like she told Grandpa the truth behind the matter.

Re:

A funny coincidence:

In episode 6, He Xi (Ren Zhong) goes to the movies with his girlfriend (Zhang Li), and they watch A Wonderful Life starring Shu Qi as the female lead. Meanwhile, I am watching New Age Love (新恋爱时代 - Xin Lian Ai Shi Dai) starring Ren Zhong and Yao Di, who plays He Bei's girlfriend in this drama, on the internet. In New Age Love, Ren Zhong and Yao Di go the movies and watch If You Are The One, starring ... wait for it ... Shu Qi as the female lead. What are the odds that Ren Zhong would go to two movies with two different girlfriends in two different dramas and pick out ones starring Shu Qi in both dramas?

P.S. and the girlfriends both cry during the movie.

P.P.S. the other coincidence is that the directors picked movies that I could recognize. I don't know that many Chinese movies, but the clips included Shu Qi's male costars, Liu Ye from Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress and Ge You from Farewell My Concubine, and that helped me recognize the movies.
