Re:

Been surfing the net on this drama, and from my investigations, the drama supposedly pays homage to Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo according to director/actor Liu Yunlong, who took on the leading role.

Re:

If you missed the 1st episode, the rebroadcast for EP 1 is at ~10AM Saturday (today), as well as, at ~6:30 PM Sunday.

I'll likely post my thoughts on the first episode sometime after the final rebroadcast on Sunday.

Re:

Apologize for the delay.

The first 8 episodes or so were difficult to watch--difficult in that we are literally party to the players who take a part in having our protagonist, Lin Tianlong locked up. I don't know which of them is the more dispicable, but I was thrown for a loop in the first episode at the bar proprietress and her cowardly husband. These two derived their pleasure on others' misfortunes, egging on Meizi's (Tianglong's fiance) cousin, who professes he's in love with her. They are also covetous of Tianlong's family home. The proprietress admitted to her husband the two were the ones to plant the seed in the cousin's mind.

The cousin is despicable. He conspires with the Luck's (ship owned by Mr. Zhuang) first mate to send Tianlong to prison on his wedding day on a charge (I'll discuss the charge in a bit). He rapes Meizi when she continues insisting on being Tianglong's wife, taking care of Tianglong's ill father. I think she would have ended her life then if not holding onto the belief that she'd one day be reunited with Tianlong. And when the cousin still isn't able to get her, he poisons and strangles Tianlong's father. Unfortunately for him, the murder was witnessed by the bar proprietress' husband. But since the cousin is a military officer, he initially threatens the two, followed by including them in his plans to take Meizi (who is now pregnant with his child) away in exchange for the two obtaining ownership of Tianglong's home.

There's also the greedy first mate, Gu. In the first episode, he had secretly boarded two assassins onto the Luck for a sum of money, with promise of more money when they arrive safely at their destination. The assassins' mission was to capture a man is linked to Sun Yat-sen (yes, that Sun Yat-sen). The drama begins in 1913, just months before the failed Second Revolution, an attempt to overthrow Yuan Shikai. The man linked to Sun was stolen aboard the Luck by the ship's captain. He considered himself a revolutionary and this was his way of contributing. The man was supposed to land in Hawaii and from there be flown to Japan where he had a message to deliver. Alas, the man is killed by the assassins on the ship when he protects the ship's captain. The ship's captain's health was failing so he charged Tianlong to deliver the letter to Japan. Tianlong has no idea of the contents of the letter. Of course, Gu shadows Tianlong when they are in Japan, learning Tianlong is asked to deliver a letter to a Mr. Huang back in China. Being the upright person that he is, Tianlong doesn't ask and agrees, believing he will be fulfilling the captain's last wishes.

Gu divulges this bit to Meizi's cousin and the two use it to frame Tianlong as a revolutionary. Gu isn't done there. With the help of a German, he obtains at least 10% of the shares of Mr. Zhuang's shipping company. Originally, Tianglong was supposed to be the latest member of the board, on Mr. Zhuang's recommendation. But because the company was in need of money, Mr. Zhuang had to sell some of his shares to the German.

And lastly, there's the prosecutor who supposedly is in love with Mr. Huang's daughter. I don't know whether he really loves her or is using her because of her position to rise in the ranks. Unbeknownst to her, he is the one who kills her father. She vows to find her father's killer. To hide the fact that her father had connections to Sun Yat-sen, he tells the naive Tianlong to never mention of the letter that he had brought to Mr. Huang's home (the letter never got to Mr. Huang, intercepted by the prosecutor). He falsely promises that Tianlong would be released soon. But that never happens. He fools Mr. Zhuang that Tianlong had died due to an illness that spread among the occupants of the prison. So now only a few are privileged to this news, but Tianlong's father is never told, to give him hope.

Then in EP 9, the prosecutor gives orders to quiet Ah Zheng, Tianlong's shipmate, who is trying to have Tianlong released. Gruesome way to prevent Ah Zheng from talking. In front of Tianlong's father's gravesite, Ah Zheng is attacked from behind, poisoned (?) and then had his tongue cut out. I don't know whether he lives or not, but the attack was witnessed by I'm guessing a grave robber (he had a gun and was about to shoot Ah Zheng from behind until the assistant came up).

More later, of Tianlong in prison...

Re:

I'm enjoying this drama a lot. This is how revenge should go.

Before his 100 days imprisonment, Tianlong had attempted suicide once. A sailor most of his life, it was difficult adapting, especially when the only contact he had were with the prison guards. And they could care less about him. He was going mad and at one point begged the guards to put him in a jail cell with any inmate, even one who could be more dangerous than him.

I'm not sure how far into his imprisonment, but his solitude ended when one of the Emperor's master (teacher) appeared before him. The old man had been thrown into Prison No.7 for at least 16 years. He didn't know that the monarchy was now a republic. The prison guards called him "Old Madman". Apparently, before he was imprisoned the Emperor had sent him on a mission to the West to purchase weaponry. But not long after he was sent a cryptic message to return. Upon his return, he was taken to Prison No.7. I'm guessing the orders came from the Dowager Empress.

In those 16 years, "Old Madman" had started digging with a small tool. He miscalculated, believing the one wall of Tianlong's prison chamber would lead outside to the sea.

Thanks to "Old Madman", Tianlong learns how to deduct who were responsible for his imprisonment. The one person's motive he didn't understand was the prosecutor's. Upon becoming "Old Madman"'s student, he was also promised that he'll find the answer to leaving Prison No.7. There were so many profound exchanges of ideas between these two men.

And years passed. While his enemies rose in status, Tianlong, locked in Prison No.7, learned all different subjects so that he'll be able to take his revenge one day.

Then the day came. "Old Madman" was dying. He suffered from a disease that had plagued his father and his grandfather. He tells Tianlong of his treasure--a king's ransom you can say. And it has grown tremendously with interest (16 years worth). He had pretended to be crazy to fool the guards, always talking about his treasure, but his mind was quite clear. "Old Madman" tells him the combination to the safe that he had taken at the HSBC. The combination: the numbers in pi. The treasure will help Tianlong to take his revenge. He doesn't explicitly tell Tianlong how to get out, but says hints that the only person to ever leave Prison No.7 is a dead one. If Tianlong isn't able to figure it out, he deserves to stay imprisoned.

Seeing that he is dying, the guards pitied and wanted to remove "Old Madman" to an upstairs prison, where there would be more light. "Old Madman" refused, holding steadfastly to his bed when they tried to carry him away.

Soon after, "Old Madman" dies. Tianlong overhears the guards discussing disposal of "Old Madman" by throwing him into the sea. He goes to "Old Madman", makes his bows and taking things from "Old Madman"'s hidden space, concocts a mask that resembles "Old Madman". This was one of the "subjects" Tianlong had learned while under "Old Madman"'s tutelage (he is able to disguise his face as well as his voice). As "Old Madman", the guards wrap up his body and throws him over the towers of the prison into the sea.

That's the end of EP 12 or 13, the first 1 or 2 episodes of this week's worth of episodes. If you guys haven't had a chance to watch this week, definitely catch up during the weekend marathon. We'll see how Tianlong reunites with his friend, Ah Zheng...and also how he rewards those who helped him and the fate of one of the peoples who took a part in his false imprisonment.
