Re: J-Drama: 八重の桜 (Yae's Sakura)

The character updates were so interesting, Hiroshi! Reading those modern dates of how long some of them lived was astonishing to me, making me realize that Yae and her peers were right there in our rearview mirror, so to speak. Amazingly, some of their lives probably overlapped with some of our very own CJK members.

Overall, Yae's Sakura was a little uneven to me. Some parts were excellent and unforgettable, while generously interspersed with boring and laborious episodes. I particularly enjoyed both Haruka Ayase and Odagiri Joe as Yae and Niijima Jo. Excellent casting, with great performances by each.

My other favorite was Rio Suzuki portraying the child Yae. I'd like to see more of her as she matures. I notice in Asianwiki that she has been in two other NTV dramas since her NHK work in Yae's Sakura.

This Taiga had outstanding visuals in the opening credits, both artistically and musically. They also seemed to periodically update the openings more often to reflect where Yae was in the context of the story. I'd have to say that the opening credits were consistently excellent, with nary a flaw.

I'm also ready for the next Taiga!

Re: J-Drama: 八重の桜 (Yae's Sakura)

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Nchristi! Yes, I was so surprised that Yae lived all the way until 1931. What a fascinating lifetime she had—it started off in the samurai period and ended when Japan was already a modernized country on the brink of world war and disaster.

I felt the same way about Yae's Sakura, especially about it being uneven. They seemed to focus way too much on certain parts of Yae's life, at the expense of other parts which could have been interesting to see, such as Yae's later life in the early 20th century. It would have been interesting to see what she thought of the Japanese government in the 1920s, as it drove the country to the brink of militarism and total war. Instead, though, I thought it started to drag a bit in the middle. I know the Aizu War was a very important turning point in Yae's life, but instead of spending 6 episodes on it, I feel like it could have been covered in just 2-3.

Yes, Haruka Ayase did an excellent job as Yae! I think she did an excellent job as the star of this Taiga, and I'd love to see her carry another drama in the future, too. I was thinking that if NHK ever does a remake of Oshin, she would do a great job playing the Oshin character. I see some resemblances between her and Tanaka Yuko's (Oshin) acting. Just a thought! emoticon

I wonder if the constant changing of the opening visuals will be a running theme in the Taigas? I really enjoyed it. Certain sequences were bright, while others were rather dark and cold—it all depended on where Yae was in her life at the moment. The final episode's visual sequence (which played at the very end) was excellent.

On to Strategist Kanbei and Hideyoshi!

Re: J-Drama: 八重の桜 (Yae's Sakura)

Ayase Haruka was appear in Yae no Sakura two years ago. NHK announced she is return to another Taiga as "Seirei no Moribito" (The Guardian of Spirits). Show is air on NHK in 2016. class blockquote Ayase Haruka will be starring in the 2016 NHK Taiga fantasy drama "Seirei no Moribito" (The Guardian of Spirits) as announced during the press conference held on 28 July. The drama is based on a 10-volume fantasy novel by Uehashi Nahoko published in 1996 which had sold 3.7 million copies to date and will be shot entirely in 4K format. In conjunction with NHK's 90th anniversary, this drama will be shown over 22 episodes in three years starting from spring 2016.

Ayase plays the role of Barusa, a lonely female bodyguard who co-exists with spirits and embarks on an adventure with the prince Chagumu in this drama. She remarked during the press conference that she is very happy to work with NHK again after their collaboration in "Yae no Sakura" although she also admitted about being worried over the longer O.A. period this time. Although there will be many action scenes in this fantasy drama, she also hopes to show the human side of things in the story to the viewers.
Special thanks to my friend Mori Ono for info via email. Anyone can confirmed?

Re:

Hi everyone!
ひさしぶりですね。
Long time no see..emoticon

I recently started watching this one after it became available on Dramafever. I sort of got out of watching the taigas when most of the sites I used were taken down...

I am up to about episode 6 and really liking it. I also like Ayase Haruka very much - I remember her from Crying Out Love From the Center of the World back when I was first watching jdorama.

I saw her in person once at the Japan Society in NYC when her movie, Happy Flight, debuted there.

I actually was in Aizu Wakamatsu this past spring when I visited the Tohoku area.

Hope you guys are all doing well!

Re: J-Drama: 八重の桜 (Yae's Sakura)

It's so nice to hear from you, Mara! Welcome back to CJKDramas. We've missed you! emoticon

This drama finished airing here in Los Angeles in 2013, I believe. Ayase Haruka did an excellent job in this one. The second half of the drama becomes extremely fascinating, so stay tuned! Feel free to peruse this thread to look back on our discussions of the early episodes.

What a treat that you got to visit Aizu-Wakamatsu, the area in Japan where this drama took place. It is so rewarding to actually go and see the areas and historical sites we've been watching for years on these Taiga dramas.
