I was thinking it was still 80 and missed the last one two weeks ago. If anyone knows where I can watch Episode 70, please post where. I'd just like to see what Yusin's final end was--in battle or died peacefully at home. After all that happened in history, Chun Chu had to wait his turn to be King. That whole period was a bit murky and mixed up I think. It would have been a very troubled time for Silla. I thnk this drama appears to have too many cooks stirring the pot. Can't be one writer mixing this stew.nondisclosed_email@example.com (brad6)Mon, 04 Feb 2013 17:21:12 +0000 Re: K-Drama: 대왕의 꿈 (大王的夢想) (Dream of the Emperor/King's Dream)https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060731,from=rss#post2060731https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060731,from=rss#post2060731You did not miss much. They are still trying random things trying to find something that sticks, but that means doing something different every week, so it lacks any form or consistency. Kind of hard to do that when the two main leads are always injured in the midst of chaos. That's why ratings are important in these expensive productions... Good ratings silences the pressure from above. Problem is only fantasy complete fiction does well nowadays. Warrior dramas or Historical themed series lately are struggling to find viewers. SK and Japanese ajummas want younger pretty boy eye candy in their period dramas with less complex storylines nowadays. The problem with Queen Seungman is she wasn't supposed to be the evil character. She was supposed to be the successor to Deokman, Queen Jindeok. But with dissapointing ratings they changed her into the villain, which she wasn't intended to play... The actress playing her is young and plays the usual cute and nice characters, like in Bread, Love and Dreams where she became rather popular... So for her to play this odd role, she is out of her element and experience level. I agree Seungman is the worst aspect of this series, but I'd also add Bihyung... luckily in the episode 20s... It looks like these figures may coming to an end based on what is going on in the story and hopefully replaced with Choi Chul Ho being one of the big names to be joining the cast soon. This was the ray of light I mentioned two weeks ago in that it looks like Seungman and Bihyung are shifting towards an end? Another announcement recently is the casting of Lee Jong Soo to play Chunchu's adult son. He was the brother rival of Geunchogo in that series and also King's trusted guard in Yi San, Han Ji Min's brother. Hopefully with the addition of these two notable veterans should help improve future episodes.nondisclosed_email@example.com (SuperRookie)Mon, 04 Feb 2013 13:09:41 +0000 Re:https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060727,from=rss#post2060727https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060727,from=rss#post2060727I have missed quite a few episodes so cannot really be too sensible talking about this drama. Even without all the drama of the falling off the horse delays etc. I have never really been truly taken with this treatment of the history or even of the fictional elements. I think the actress playing the evil Queen is totally inadequate for TV roles. She is suitable for a Saturday morning children's show with her being the witch or wicked old woman in that kind of story. I cannot tolerate over acting. I admit she is given the same situations to deal with over and over and it gets very boring. Yusin is not impressive given that he is a warrior who is really strong and tough and makes great waves in the history of the period. Chun Chu is also bent on chewing the scenery every now and then. He does so like to use his voice in a deep growl when it is not indicated in the dialogue. All in all..IN MY OPINION...this drama is in a very amateur rating. It is such an interesting time in history actually, despite being so early. The characters must have been tough people then..even the women, but this treatment is very washed out. Maybe I got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning, but those are my sentiments.nondisclosed_email@example.com (brad6)Mon, 04 Feb 2013 12:23:03 +0000 Re: K-Drama: 대왕의 꿈 (大王的夢想) (Dream of the Emperor/King's Dream)https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060726,from=rss#post2060726https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060726,from=rss#post2060726Programming Notice: for those watching this series on KBS World in America, this series will be preempted this weekend, likely due to the production halt with Choi Su Jong's accident that we discussed some weeks ago. KXLA will continue, however it is four episodes or two weeks behind the above. It remains to seen if KXLA will be hit by the same issue in two weeks. I hope that KBS America takes this opportunity to put both their KBS World and KXLA programming back on the same page since this divide has affected the viewership activity. If they avoid preventing KXLA down the line at least we'll only be a weekend in division. More later after I have time to watch KXLA's episode 24 from last night, which I have not seen yet after travelling and not having KBSW in the last two weeks... Finally a new episode for me to discuss here. Assuming last night's Special 4 of 4 aired, and according this week's KBS America update, it looks like Dream of the Emperor will resume this weekend, January 19 on KXLA - let's hope that it resumes where it should at episode 19 and not some other weird place like what happened two weeks ago. For KBS World (in America) episodes 21 and 22 aired over the weekend, so if all goes according to plan this week, it looks like our schedule for the two channels is divided by 2 weeks, or 4 episodes. I won't spoil, but all I'm going to say... after seeing last night's episode 22... I see a bit of a ray of light for this series with what looks to be taking place - it still suffers from the issues of this series though (problems with the story direction, lack of any substance in the characterization, uncertain overall plot direction, uninteresting story/characters), but at least it's getting a bit better and looking better to come with what's starting to happen with two major aspects I find dragging down this series to be improved! (If someone's interested to know what I mean, PM me as I don't want to spoil KXLA viewers) Peg actually the writer must be sharing the same mind with you (on your previous post about your comments on writing it so the injury reflects real life). Something happened to Choi Su Jong's character to reflect his first accident injury in real life from months ago since we're now getting to around that point of when they were filming it. nondisclosed_email@example.com (SuperRookie)Mon, 14 Jan 2013 10:43:49 +0000 Re: K-Drama: 대왕의 꿈 (大王的夢想) (Dream of the Emperor/King's Dream)https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060147,from=rss#post2060147https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060147,from=rss#post2060147Dream of the Emperor Production have confirmed what's going on with Choi Soo Jong's role, he will remain as previously announced by KBS, but due to his injury he will be doing vocals (which is unclear at this point if he'll just be in indoor scenes or only providing narration) for the next 3 weeks. This is incredibly good news given his recovery time is 8 weeks and he could have completely been missing from the series for that long. It's going to be interesting to see what exactly they do to utilize him in his recovery stage though... hopefully the new recast role announcement for another character with the very good actor, Choi Chul Ho, who was incredible in Dae Jo Young as Gulsabiwu, hopefully will be able to alleviate the pressure and take on some of that burden with Choi Soo Jong gone. My concern though is, Choi Soo Jong's serious injury requires time to heal... I really hope he's not pushing himself to a potential breaking point given how hard he's pushing himself to stay in this role with so many injuries and never really getting the time to fully recover given he feels responsible for this show to continue. News via HanCinema Actor Choi Soo-jong is going to star his voice in "The Great King's Dream". Taking on the role of Kim Chun-chu, Choi Soo-jong had to cancel a couple episodes of the drama as he had to receive treatment from falling off a horse. Thankfully, he's going to reappear in the drama from the twenty-seventh episode in vocals. The production thinks no more episodes should be missed so about three weeks of the episodes should star only his voice at least. Meanwhile, Choi fell off the horse during a scene on the 16th of December and fractured his shoulder and hand between the first and second fingers and underwent 7 hours of surgery. Netizen's say, "I thought I'd never see the drama again", "Choi Soo-jong is amazing" and more.nondisclosed_email@example.com (SuperRookie)Thu, 10 Jan 2013 10:08:19 +0000 Re:https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060132,from=rss#post2060132https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060132,from=rss#post2060132SuperRookie Unfortunately charisma is not actable, the actress has to pocess that quality first to be able to portray the Princess as charismatic, but she can portray fierceness which is actable. nondisclosed_email@example.com (pali)Wed, 09 Jan 2013 16:33:10 +0000 Re: K-Drama: 대왕의 꿈 (大王的夢想) (Dream of the Emperor/King's Dream)https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060110,from=rss#post2060110https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060110,from=rss#post2060110pilotpen01, Happy New Year and it's good to hear you weigh in, but also mention how you're watching this series as it will help take into account what to do with this thread given the now split schedule between KBS World and KXLA. Hope to see you around more frequently. Both you and pali, are spot on with your assessments. When Hong Eun Hee replaced Park Joo Mi, here's what she said, "Miss Park Joo-mi’s excellent depiction of the queen will be difficult for me to catch up, but I wished to show my own version of the queen." She continued, "my version of the character will be more of a fierce and charismatic queen, rather than a warm and soft ruler." Park Joo Mi is of course hard to replace, and has far more experience and it shows, but I found Hong Eun Hee to do a pretty good job considering the unusual circumstances at play, and I actually found her tougher characterization welcome, considering they have to be a counterpoint to Seungman's excessive nature. nondisclosed_email@example.com (SuperRookie)Tue, 08 Jan 2013 12:20:09 +0000 Re:https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060106,from=rss#post2060106https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060106,from=rss#post2060106I am not as sure whether the new actress has the same attributes of the former Pricess Deokman who combined strentgh with softness and sensitivity although the new actress seemingly fits the role. While Deokman is a prominent character, Chunchu is one the title character of the show so if another actor replaces the current actor, it would change the current tone of the series.nondisclosed_email@example.com (pilotpen01)Tue, 08 Jan 2013 07:19:13 +0000 Re: K-Drama: 대왕의 꿈 (大王的夢想) (Dream of the Emperor/King's Dream)https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060099,from=rss#post2060099https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060099,from=rss#post2060099Thanks Kittypaws. Your help is much appreciated, as are your thoughts and feedback on this issue as it is something that is increasingly becoming an issue with the continuing divide of KBSW and KXLA having different schedules. This is an especially tricky issue as there are pros/cons to both schedule benchmarks with one side that will be affected, especially difficult since in general, the forum is mostly somewhat evenly split (give or take) between KBS World and KXLA viewers - this will definitely require some further thought and discussion amongst the moderators/admin for a decision, to see if this has reached enough special circumstances to warrant an exception. I'd like to first wait and see what happens on KXLA this weekend and next Monday's upcoming schedule, then we can go from there. This will be especially difficult as far as timing for me since I may not have the time to oversee this thread or the discussions on a consistent basis with my schedule becoming increasingly limited throughout the month and into next month for my holiday mode.nondisclosed_email@example.com (SuperRookie)Mon, 07 Jan 2013 21:41:07 +0000 Re:https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060090,from=rss#post2060090https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060090,from=rss#post2060090My intentions are in the right place and I will even put a note plastered to the screen, but I just hope I remember in time. Even when I do, they seem to start a little earlier than 9:30 because it's already on and I've missed the Episode number. But I'll try, SuperRookie.    You mentioned "condensed" version. Maybe what I saw this weekend on KXLA was a condensed version, but it would be hard to tell. It sure dragged on enough to make me think it wasn't.    I can't speak for anyone else, but if I turn out to be a lone poster in this discussion, it won't bother me any if an exception can be made for this series, and KBS World is made the guideline for discussions. If there are not very many catching this on KXLA, then this minority of viewers could just not read the posts by KBS World for a while till they catch up. I think it's too confusing to KBC World viewers to try to remember what they want to write if they're never sure what episode is showing on KXLA. I'm afraid people would just give up posting on this series. Wouldn't want that to happen because viewers' posts are sometimes as good, even better, than the series!    nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kittypaws)Mon, 07 Jan 2013 16:37:48 +0000 Re: K-Drama: 대왕의 꿈 (大王的夢想) (Dream of the Emperor/King's Dream)https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060087,from=rss#post2060087https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2060087,from=rss#post2060087Thank you so much for the confirmation, Kittypaws. Sounds to me like someone made a mistake or perhaps the KBS World episodes weren't in the pipeline for the KBS America time condensed version for KXLA. Well, now the problem is, on the schedule for this weekend on KXLA it lists the (recap) Specials per the info on the previous page on what aired on KBS World while KXLA got the variety shows... will KXLA just air 2 or 4 of these specials... Oy... So it sounds like KXLA (which is our spoiler benchmark) will be anywhere from 1-4 weeks behind KBS World. This is going to wreck havoc with our discussions with those of us watching on KBS World unable to comment until at this point an unspecified time. I guess we'll have to wait until this weekend to find out more of what is going on with this situation. Kittypaws please post this weekend to let us know which Drama Special you get or if somehow the schedule is a mistake and it ends up as episode 19 as I might not be available and I can't check since I'm dual recording KBS World and MBC Digital in this time slot and can't change the channel to check. In other news, (at this point, and this could change), KBS has decided to preempt a weekend's pair of episodes in South Korea, but as of now, they have decided to stick with Choi Su Jong and wait for his recovery. This may change depending on the circumstances and how well Choi Su Jong may recuperate, but most people thought KBS would be forced to replace him since they are kind of caught between a rock and a hard place. With Choi Su Jong's injuries, it is still unclear how they will be filming him, perhaps indoor scenes and just talking? I am glad to see them stick with Choi Su Jong, if they replaced Choi Su Jong, this would have been a huge set back for the series as you can't really replace someone of CSJ's stature this late in the series. This is too long to halt filming for... after they halted the production for Park Joo Mi already. KBS will be announcing next week on whether they will wait or replace Choi Su Jong. I'm expecting the producers to replace Choi Su Jong, although I wonder who they could possibly cast to fill his shoes in such a hurry - even in ideal conditions Choi Su Jong is irreplaceable in terms of talent, but then in these conditions pressed for time, that's going to be very tough. One possibility that has been floating around, perhaps Choi Su Jong could return as Chunchu's son during his son's historical reign. The future role of Bidam has been recast, some good news. Choi Su Jong's horse slipped and he was injured in another accident during filming. This is like CSJ's third (two on set, and one with his manager driving his car on the way to another filming location). I have a feeling this producer/director who helmed The President and Iron Empress may be in hot water with KBS, his productions seem to be plagued with injuries and weird goings on, ratings issues or etc. (per our discussions in the last few months) - his works helming The President, Iron Empress, this, all having issues. The Korean film and TV industry has a poor track record on safety, so I don't want to make it sound like this is a Dream of the Emperor problem, that's what happens when the filming schedule is so fast to be an almost live shoot/live edit system with episodes being written/filmed/completed the same week of broadcast. But what we're seeing in Dream of the Emperor is higher than normal. (And to be fair, CSJ and Park Joo Mi's car accidents aren't directly involved to this production during filming at least, but it does still come as a result of this system's almost live system where they have to drive late at nights from shooting location to shooting location, which for historical/period dramas can be far distances away). I really wish the K-Drama industry would stop pandering to the viewers and netizens and being so beholden to them, they really do need to start to slow down these productions and not have it be so reactionary to having things changed to fit viewer demands and trends, only then can these complex productions put more quality and safety ahead of the hurried speed to make the airing. Anyway, this time... Choi Su Jong's horse slipped on an icy road during filming and he has fallen on his previously injured shoulder with a previous horse fall some months ago. Reports are surfacing that he may need surgery (for his shoulders or bones), but details are still starting to surface, so it remains to be seen how accurate the final info will be - it's unknown the extent of his injury or if it will affect the drama production yet. I hope Choi Su Jong will be ok and that he doesn't push himself too hard since he feels a great personal responsibility to uphold this production and has been on painkillers after the first injury so as not to be a negative impact to the production. I'd imagine there will be more news in the coming days on the extent of his injury and if it may affect production... hoping for the best.nondisclosed_email@example.com (SuperRookie)Thu, 27 Dec 2012 10:48:23 +0000 Re: K-Drama: 대왕의 꿈 (大王的夢想) (Dream of the Emperor/King's Dream)https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2059669,from=rss#post2059669https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2059669,from=rss#post2059669KBS America Dream of the Emperor Preemption continues per the above, it will be resuming this weekend on KBS World Asia region this weekend though, and we were 1 week behind them for this particular series, so that adds another potential hint that we will have it resume potentially next weekend as hinted by KBS America's above announcement a few posts up. On Sunday night is the 2012 KBS Entertainment Awards show.nondisclosed_email@example.com (SuperRookie)Mon, 17 Dec 2012 10:09:00 +0000 Re: K-Drama: 대왕의 꿈 (大王的夢想) (Dream of the Emperor/King's Dream)https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2059353,from=rss#post2059353https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2059353,from=rss#post2059353_____________________________ KBS America Dream of the Emperor Announcement On the KBS America website: Schedule Notice Please be advised that "Dream of the Emperor" will not be aired from Dec. 8th to 30th. It will resume its regular schedule in 2013. _____________________________ Looks like it's about as what we guessed in our discussions, a 1 month break that reflects the SK broadcast preemption. So it sounds like the first weekend of January will have this series resuming. Good to know at least we have a ballpark figure on when it's resuming. nondisclosed_email@example.com (SuperRookie)Thu, 13 Dec 2012 18:17:41 +0000 Re:https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2059220,from=rss#post2059220https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2059220,from=rss#post2059220Evidently, the actresses' physical condition was more serious than most people knew. It is a shame that the accident caused her to leave the show. Let's hope her recovery will be complete soon, and she will be in another show soon. It is difficulut to see another actor take over after the character has been established by another actor. nondisclosed_email@example.com (pali)Mon, 10 Dec 2012 16:31:36 +0000 Re: K-Drama: 대왕의 꿈 (大王的夢想) (Dream of the Emperor/King's Dream)https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2059219,from=rss#post2059219https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2059219,from=rss#post2059219This week's schedule has just been released, as to be expected per our discussions... Programming Notice: Dream of the Emperor Preemption on KBS World, KBS America, KXLA This weekend on KXLA, Win Win and Happy Together variety shows will take its slot, while on KBS World/America channel, TV Movie: Chuno the Slave Hunters. I'm assuming the Slave Hunters movie will be the series edited down to probably 2 hours. KBS World viewers in Asia who saw the Slave Hunters TV Movie version over the weekend (they're ahead of us by a week) have been complaining that they want Dream of the Emperor back on KBS World ASAP. I'm assuming we're going to be getting another week or two of preemption, given the 1 month broadcast interruption in Korea. But we'll see... Let's see what next week's schedule will bring. Dream of the Emperor resumed over the weekend in South Korea. But unfortunately for them, MBC's weekend melodrama/contemporary series, May Queen, has been dominating and it started way earlier so it's already attracted a good set of viewers - and is now on its run towards the finale, so it's attracting even more viewers and has thus been given another 6 episode extension. Argh! May Queen was supposed to end sooner and that might have given Dream of the Emperor a shot in attracting those stray viewers.nondisclosed_email@example.com (SuperRookie)Mon, 10 Dec 2012 16:23:12 +0000 Re: K-Drama: 대왕의 꿈 (大王的夢想) (Dream of the Emperor/King's Dream)https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2059022,from=rss#post2059022https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2059022,from=rss#post2059022Kittypaws, good to see you weigh in - share your views too. Yep, Choi Su Jong is definitely looking more the part lately! I'm on pins and needless waiting for him to rise to King... no one is a better K-Drama historical or period drama leader/king/etc. as Choi Su Jong! The question... will we see the extent of his greatness in this series? I don't know... crossing fingers. Kittypaws, excellent point about Choi Su Jong's accident. He had a bunch of action scenes in, was it episode 17? I was actually surprised, cause the horse accident (on top of the car accident a month prior) happened before these. It was reported he couldn't even hold a sword at this point. Was very happy to see him able to do the action scenes in our weekend's episodes, I saw nothing to suggest he was really injured, he masked it very well. I hope he was able to spend time resting and healing during the 1 month break. On your question on King and Queen, I won't answer that specifically as I don't want to spoil you or anyone else. Historically it's an interesting and complex chain of events, I'll put it that way. But then again, they might take a detour from history on how the succession issues of the story may play out. We'll have to stay tuned! On a more general nature, the position question can be answered without spoiling. Yeah, the position can be assigned, it's not always so cut and dry of course, and there's a number of ways of going about getting that position... sometimes they have to marry into it (which is what your original question questions)... for example, Gukban in this series having to marry Princess Deokman earlier on in the series, to solidify his position vs say Chunchu whose family line lost the seonggol (sacred bone, royal) status. If the power at be though, whether King or court, they can assign the position when the time is necessary. Prior to Queen Sado's passing, she held enough power as the elder of the family (and royals), clan power, etc., to depose King Jinji (line of Chunchu which then weakened his family's status) to then install King Jinpyung. Since her passing, there's been a void of power, struggle between inept Jinpyung vs the court, Prime Minister (Yusin and now Chunchu's grandfather), and (with Seungman hidden in the shadows). All of this of course brings into play all the complexities of politics, as well as the Silla Bone Rank System (class system). nondisclosed_email@example.com (SuperRookie)Tue, 04 Dec 2012 18:39:56 +0000 Re:https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2059019,from=rss#post2059019https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2059019,from=rss#post2059019Per SuperRookie, I think it's a very good choice of word--"noble" when used to describe Choi Su Jong's acting. It's almost expected of his characters. He was certainly noble in the Patriots and Dae Jo Young. A little more questionable in The President and funny, that drama, as good as it was, doesn't rate as high with me as the other two mentioned. There's just something about him that makes people trust his word. I enjoy seeing that. We see enough of the underside of humanity in both U.S. and Asian films. Nothing wrong with that genre, but it's always nice to see a leader, or a father of a family, with integrity. I agree there's still too many sub-plots going on, but at least Choi is starting to look more natural playing the adult Chuhchu. What we saw this past weekend must have been filmed after his car accident and fall off a horse, but I couldn't "see" it so he must have great pain killers! If he becomes King, and the Princess, Queen, does that imply that they get married at some point? Or can those positions be "assigned" on family lines so that he may not have to be married to the Queen? But if married, I would have liked to have seen him and Park Joo Mi as King and Queen. She also projects integrity.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kittypaws)Tue, 04 Dec 2012 17:37:23 +0000 Re: K-Drama: 대왕의 꿈 (大王的夢想) (Dream of the Emperor/King's Dream)https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2059016,from=rss#post2059016https://bcjkdramasincalifornia.runboard.com/p2059016,from=rss#post2059016Sunday's Episode 18 The first half of the series was more of the same with this series still having way too many subplots, but no centralized driving force in the storyline, along with the other lacking aspects we've discussed throughout. The second half of the episode started to get more interesting with the events surrounding the King, Queen Seungman's plot and those people massacred, to get rid of potential opposition forces out of the way. She's able to convince King Jinpyung that Prince Manhwa installation and future will be prohibited by Bihyeong and Gwinum. The scene with Seungman running into her daughter was interesting, with those bell-like tones of her jewelry ringing vaguely in her subconscious. LOL in every series I've seen King Jinpyung portrayed as (as a historical figure), as in this one, he's either an idiot, completely clueless or useless. With King Jinpyung's actions in this episode though, perhaps it will give rise to that dream Chunchu had some episodes ago of taking matters into his own hands and killing the king? I thought the performance by Yusin's actor once he learned of the truth of what had happened to those people was one of the stronger performances of the episode. There's something noble with Choi Su Jong's acting, something as simple as him picking up and handling rice in his hands earlier in the episode had a majestic feel of how he moves and acts. Looks like we're inching closer to some progress, the sooner we get out of this era of Jinpyung (and I hope Seungman sooner than later), the better. Now the waiting game for episode 19 and the jolt of having to get acquainted with a new Princess Deokman. I hope the one month break has given the production crew the time to get things sorted out. This needs to gain some substance and composure in the storyline... not much is sticking so far.nondisclosed_email@example.com (SuperRookie)Tue, 04 Dec 2012 16:00:38 +0000
