Re: K-Drama: 신의 (Faith)

Since I am new to Korean Drama, I have nothing to compare with this one. I love "period pieces," however, I am not big on time travel, etc. I will continue to watch a few more episodes since there is nothing else currently in programming that I prefer.

Also, I thought that somewhere in the 2nd episode the Warrior mentioned that the Woman Doctor {no disrespect intended, I'm mentally challenged when it comes to the characters's name} could not pierce him with the sword so I assumed that there was some other force at work in this case...maybe I missed something.

Re: K-Drama: 신의 (Faith)

Episode 3

I started off the drama only liking Choi Young and "Heaven's doctor." Ep. 2, I took a liking to the spikey haired little acrobat translator and now, in this episode, I took a liking to the princess. Much more character development on her part. Really liked the scene where the doctor puts make-up on her; we finally see her loosen the cracks a bit and actually smile!!! emoticon

& once again, the writers demonstrate a lackluster way to end the episode. Something that I have come to expect out of my 3 or so years of watching Kdramas is to watch an epic and/or suspenseful ending. This was one of the little things to why I chose Kor. TV over American in primetime; you don't take into consideration much, until you see a show where it's gone :/

Re: K-Drama: 신의 (Faith)

I paid more attention last night. I'm enjoying the historical characters much more than the interaction between the warrior and the heaven's doctor, who is such a ditz, but the King and the Princess of Yuan are interesting. Park Se Young was the sister in Love Rain, but I didn't recognize her. Even so, not the most interesting drama.

It seemed to me that the Princess was speaking a slightly different form of Korean--can anybody tell me whether I heard that correctly?

Re: K-Drama: 신의 (Faith)

hyena you heard correctly, you have good ears. This period of time is using Middle Korean. Further complicating all this is Korean has seven levels of speech - the ones used in historicals/period dramas use the ones not common in contemporary settings or what is taught usually, and have different speech patterns, rhythm, intonation, etc... the problem surfaces when some (usually younger) actors are put in positions to these tasks and don't have the skill set for it, given it's uncommonly used and not easy.... all these affect delivery and consistency/inconsistency between various actors/actresses delivering it differently. In this series there's a mix of the old (Middle) and modern (Early Modern), making it more difficult. Even those familiar with Korean seem to be confused by what's going on in this confused presentation.

Re: K-Drama: 신의 (Faith)

In a back to back viewing, finished episode 3, and last night's episode 4.

I will say it is getting much more interesting this week, with the story and backstory starting to develop. I'm continuing to have trouble getting into this one though. I can put aside the historical inaccuracies and fantasy aspects permeating the genre to make it appeal to mainstream (I actually do love fantasy and science fiction themed series), but I just can't find anything here to hold my attention consistently that I haven't seen done much better elsewhere before (like Anime).

In episode 3, like hyena, I felt a reversal. My favorite characters swapped to the King and Princess, and while I'm not fully buying the delivery aspects discussed above, I do find the Princess very interesting as a character. Together they make for a well balanced combination with the backstory we witnessed in episode 3... which explains their less-than-friendly relations.

Strangely, what began as my favorite aspects, Choi Young, and Eunsoo (Doctor), started to annoy me slightly. There were moments where I laughed at the little moments, but they played up the whole hate-becomes-love cliche of K-Dramas a little too much with CY not wanting treatment and the whole on and on small conflicts that will undoubtedly, eventually give rise to their love.

Last night's episode 4 was more of the same for me, but there were several interesting moments, the big one for me... Choi Young's backstory with the Moon Warriors, and that most important moment in the backstory with what the previous King had done. This was a pretty well done and substantive scene and story point, at least.

My favorite actor so far is the villain, played by Yu Oh Seong, he has a confidence and his veteran skills from his many roles in historical/period dramas show. The actor playing King Gongmin is doing a pretty good job as well, as is the actress playing the princess, Park Se Young, (delivery aside) who showed strong talent in Equator Man.

I won't belabor my past comments on the deficient ending/cliffhangers of past posts, but this episode at least felt like some improvement in this regard. Maybe the Assistant Director finally came to work that day - if only the Director would as well. emoticon

Re: K-Drama: 신의 (Faith)

I was strangely put off by the animation in last night's episode. I suppose it worked, but the style was so modern that it didn't seem to fit. Of course, the screen play is all over the place, but there are moments when I think it's going to get better. I think this one may have started with the idea "what if the king's oracle was really a time-traveler?"

I thought, too, that the scenes with the real Red Moon soldiers were well done. And I'm enjoying the King--I particularly liked the visual difference between the small statured king and the tall, overpowering villain Ki Chul. The dialogue, at least the transcription, is strange--the King says "what do you guys think?" What? That doesn't sound very king-like, although this king often sounds more like a modern mediator.

Off-putting for me was Heaven's Doctor walking around with her celadon vase, which she conveniently smashed when CY collapsed. A bit too mercenary. The actress in real life is 10 years older than Lee Min Ho, but I guess that's all the rage--older woman/younger man. As I said, this screenplay is a mish-mash of everything, including a female deaf worker who can sign! Now there's an interesting tidbit--did the Koreans teach sign language way back???

True. The trend in translations lately seems to mirror what is happening to historical and period dramas in general (mainstreaming and making it more appealing to younger audiences). I've seen a few subtitles in the last year or two that even had American slang almost like a contemporary drama would. Several in this vein, if translated more strictly, might be more akin to Shakespeare's original writings... which would be pretty difficult to market.

Re: K-Drama: 신의 (Faith)

Question: Is the young actress playing the part of the princess the same one that played the professor's daughter in the drama, If Tomorrow Comes? If so, I like her in this role and hope she will be given more exposure as this story develops.

2edgy, I didn't watch that series, but the actress playing the princess, Park Se Young was in ITC in the role as Seo Yoo Jin. Was that the professor's daughter?

SuperRookie, I think you are right. I tried to google the info but failed. I will do a little more research to find out. I'm liking this drama more and more as the plot thickens!
