Re: KBS World going HD

I wish! I'm tired of the sub-standard video quality. Pretty sad that a smaller network like MNET America (the US division anyway) looks light years better and not even in HD either. LOL

But isn't it only in Asia, Africa, Oceania or for DirectTV (outside Americas)?

The KBS World HD page is kind of vague, but says Americas, Europe etc... SD. emoticon Do you have any further info other than the one on http://kbsworld.kbs.co.kr/promotion/20120801/hd_conversion.html

Re: KBS World going HD

Don't know about their web site, but saw the "crawl" at the bottom of the picture today saying HD on Sept. 3rd. There was something about Asia, Europe, America, but I suppose it's subject to what the providers will do here in the states with their HD signal. Worst case we get letterboxed HD content on SD picture. We'll see on the 3rd. emoticon

Re: KBS World going HD

Interesting thing is... KBS is getting quite a bit of push back from some of the less advanced nations in Asia. Considering KBS World's huge growth in those areas, they better be careful how they handle this transition. There are some viewers that aren't happy with the change when some of them might have to pay for a higher premium monthly fee for the new HD channel subscription. (No idea if their SD channel will be maintained). I'd imagine, in some of the regions there, such a new monthly fee would be indeed comparatively expensive. KBS (and as usually the case with these Korean Broadcasting companies) haven't done themselves any favors with their limited information, lack of replying to consumer/viewer questions.

But for us over here... From your keyboard to the KBS gods eyes/ears. LOL! I really do hope we get some form of an upgrade... I mean, something is seriously wrong when free Hulu and even YouTube at default 360p look way better. The only advantage KBS World (visually) has is somewhat better looking than those questionable free K-Drama streaming sites which look like 240p and encoded badly. LOL!

Most viewers probably don't care... and I suppose in the end it's not that big a deal... KBS World/America version is decent and at least it looks way better than the local SBS/LA18 we get down here - stuff which (sometimes) look like the encoding was done by some bootleg operation in some remote area using computers running on DOS. emoticon If the sun ever does go out, the blinding white glow in these local SBS shows might be enough to light the entirety of SoCal, at least. emoticon

But when we have a show as glorious looking as Equator Man, it's a shame those great visuals are dampened by substandard downgrading, considering that the broadcast in Korea is in true HD. I'm spoiled now, seeing MNET America's shows looking stunning in comparison and little to no pixelation, I want the same for KBS World.

The problem though is, KBS is a niche international channel - I very much doubt the large cable operators in the US will give it a 1080 HD channel, given the limitations and they have more popular network operators that are vying for that space. But if KBS World/America can at least bump it up to 720, I'll be very happy. My expectations are low at this point though, I suspect the status quo will be maintained. If somehow we are surprised on September 3rd, we can pop open a bottle of whatever drink of our choice! (Non-alcoholic for me emoticon)

Re: KBS World going HD

I seem to have several HD channels on my TV. to tell the truth...I can't tell a lot of difference between HD and non HD. Except for the tennis matches when the dimensions are much clearer. Some channels are shown twice so I can make my choice if I want HD. this is through Cox cable by the way.
I am waiting for a couple of months to buy one of thoses new 'smart' TVs and then I will get Cox to show me all the new stuff they have in their cupboard.

Re: KBS World going HD

The difference between HD and SD can be challenging to determine as there are a lot of factors depending on your TV, equipment, your TV settings, cable box settings, the channel itself, and the program itself, and stuff that the user would not know on how the program is broadcasted/encoded. You're more likely to tell the difference in a high quality production. For example watching a KBSW daily where the camera and lighting is low grade probably not so much difference, but say Equator Man, the difference is more striking.

Does your Cox Cable box tell you a number on its front display on 720 or 1080? That's one way, but it's not so clear cut. KBS World for example is scaled up to 720 by the cable company, but it's not true 720, probably 480 (though in my opinion it doesn't even look as good as 480 as I said above), looks rather bad. For example MNET at 720 (no idea what the native res is) looks gorgeous.

Here's the difference between NBC HD and NBC regular, split screen image. HD on the left of the divide, standard on the right. HD on the left looks much clearer, while the standard on the right looks so pixelated and blurry. On my HDTV, MNET shows look like the left, while KBS World, etc, look more like the right (maybe slightly better).

Here's another comparison between HD tiers 720 vs 1080:

The detail on full HD 1080 is much clearer and sharper. (1080 is probably something we won't see for a long time here though in terms of Korean programming on cable, per my prior post about Korean channels being niche...) But hopefully we at least get 720 in the next year...

Re: KBS World going HD

emoticon Was just looking at the program schedule for LA18 and noticed that they have 9 digital sub channels (all SD). NO WAY would they ever have a HD sub channel....forgetaboutit.!!! NO ROOM!!!

I can see why the picture is so bad, they ate up all the bandwidth with all those sub channels. Way too much niche programming, too little bandwidth to go around. Lose-lose situation for the viewer. I'm surprised you can make out anything with those crappy signals. emoticon

I don't have a problem with LA18 channels. I'm glad they offer all the varied programming they do.

Re: KBS World going HD

I like the LA18 programming offering with variety as well, but agree with han on the technical limitations. Most of the local terrestrial viewers probably don't have HD as a high priority want for these international programming and prefer variety.

My complaints about the LA18/SBS shows I believe have to do with possibly their broadcast equipment and more so the transfers/encoding more than signal problems. I think nchristi mentioned before that LA18 might get it another third party source rather than SBS International (I haven't subscribed to SBS Int channel so I can't compare the versions or subs) or maybe whoever is doing the subtitles is encoding it to a lower standard....

Also the LA18.3 MBCD looks way better than 18.1, at least on our cable (though it still has the same color, white glow issues, just to a lesser degree)... is that the case for over the air viewers too? I'm not sure if the feed is going to the cable company in a different manner than the main channel.

han, down here we can't get KBS World through terrestrial like you can up there (only cable or satellite directly), terrestrial or some cable providers only get the local affiliate channel that has the KBS America primetime block. I'm assuming the KBS World feed we get comes directly from KBS America... although the video quality doesn't look much different/better than KXLA 44.1... which makes me hmm...

Yeah... I know, it's really confusing down here with all the local options vs different premium channels. LOL!

If KBS World starts transitioning America to HD, I'd imagine cable/satellite will get 720, since that's what they are already given, since it's at fake 720 at the moment (native 480 or 360?)... My understanding is KBS World that is sent to the Americas is limited to 480 tops (but as I've said before... to me, it doesn't look as good as 480 should, so maybe there's some issues with getting the signal over here or aged equipment or some other variable). But I doubt they'd be given full 1080 HD by the national cable/sat operators though, per my previous comments.

All this HD talk is making me want KBS World HD sooner than later. LOL! emoticon I don't expect it to happen here in 2012 in N.A. though. emoticon I hope KBS proves me wrong on Sept. 3rd.

emoticon My Gawd! KXLA 44 has 10 digital sub channels! Even worse!!! emoticon NO HD for you.... bwahahahaha! emoticon Variety is one thing, but why sacrifice digital quality for more advertising dollars. Station gains, viewer loses. emoticon
